Leon Askin, he played Gen. Burkhalter-"The journalists in Vienna and Austria and also in Germany call me a legend. I'm a man who lived through difficult times. I'm a man who survived the monster of all times, Adolf Hitler, and I'm still, at my high old age of 93, successful in my profession and that is the pride with which I live and survive."
@caprice6 Howard Caine (Hochstetter) was also Jewish... Amazing they could put their feelings aside about their experiences and do this as a comedy...
On Hogan's Heroes, General Alfred Burkhalter was played by Leon Askin, real name Ashkenaz (which was a Medieval name for the area we know as Germany today.) He lived in the Jewish part of Vienna, called Leopoldstadt. His parents were murdered at Treblinka. He returned to Vienna upon his retirement and was met by wildly cheering crowds!
It was the first Nazi camp liberated by U.S. troops.Edward R Murrow, whose radio report of his arrival and reception was broadcast on CBS.When I entered, men crowded around, tried to lift me to their shoulders. Buchenwald concentration camp-was a Nazi concentration camp established on the Ettersberg (Etter Mountain) near Weimar, Thuringia, Germany (at the time, Germany), in July 1937, and one of the largest and first camps on German soil.Inmates were Jews, Poles, political prisoners, Roma, Chinamen and Sinti, Jehovah's Witnesses, religious prisoners, criminals, homosexuals, and prisoners of war Among the prisoners were also writers, doctors, artists, former nobility, and princesses
A documentary for PBS followed entitled "Robert Clary A-5714, A Memoir of Liberation." He went on to host his own cable television show, which attracted major name guest stars such as Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks.
In 1980 Robert felt the need to talk about his experience during the war; he began speaking publicly through the Simon Wiesenthal Center's nationally acclaimed outreach program. "For 36 years I kept these experiences during the war locked up inside myself. But those who are attempting to deny the Holocaust, my suffering and the suffering of millions of others have forced me to speak out."
After his stint on Hogan's Heroes, Clary appeared in a handful of feature films with World War II themes including the made-for-television film, Remembrance of Love about the Holocaust. Clary also made notable appearances on Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless.
Summing up his Holocaust experiences: "The whole experience was a complete nightmare, the way they treated us, what we had to do to survive. We were less than animals. Sometimes I dream about those days. I wake up in a sweat terrified for fear I'm about to be sent away to a concentration camp. But I don't hold a grudge because that's a great waste of time. Yes, there's something dark in the human soul.
Has a tattoo on his left forearm, "A5714," from his time in a German concentration camp during WWII.Was good friends with Werner Klemperer (Colonel Klink from "Hogan's Heroes" (1965)), even after the show had been canceled, and until Werner's death.
@switcherx John Banner was also Jewish. He was forced to abandon his homeland after the 1938 Anschluss (union) between Nazi Germany and Austria, which occurred while he was engaged in a tour of Switzerland with an acting company.

After WWII he became a singing star in France, and in 1949 came to the United States to promote his career. He appeared on "The Ed Wynn Show" (1949); still learning English he performed in a French language comedy skit. His comedic skills were recognized by Broadway, where he appeared in several revues, including one which moved from theater to film, New Faces (1954).
Clary was the youngest of 14 children. At the age of 12, he began a career singing professionally. In 1942, as a result of his Jewish heritage, he was deported to the Nazi concentration camp, Buchenwald with 12 other members of his immediate family. Clary was the only survivor.
Palestinian men and women do not have equal access to justice, and women are particularly discriminated against in the penal code, which is derived from Jordanian and Egyptian law. The law enforcement structure is male dominated and sometimes biased against women.
Palestinian society often turns a blind eye to domestic violence, many women are married off in their early teens, and many have no control over their bodies.
The study, entitled Palestinian Refugee Women in Lebanon: Conditions and Challenges in Burj al-Barajneh Camp, reveals that, degraded and abused, women feel buried alive by repressive conditions in the camp.
Sarai means Princess. She was the wife of Abraham, who founded the Moslems and Jewish faith, who believed in one God. Women should have same rights Abraham had given to wife Sarai.
I also quoted from your Koran Abraham protecting his wife, God protecting Sarai from Pharaoh's lust. Why don't Moslems men follow their scripture? Palestine women do not have rights to live.
Sarai prayed to God to deliver her from the king, and He thereupon sent an angel, who struck Pharaoh whenever he attempted to touch her. Pharaoh was so astonished at these blows that he spoke kindly to Sarai, who confessed that she was Abraham's wife. If God is willingly to protect Sarah or Sarai then why don't Moslem protect their women?
When brought before Pharaoh, Sarai said that Abraham was her brother, and the king thereupon bestowed upon the latter many presents and marks of distinction ("Sefer ha-Yashar," l.c.). As a token of his love for Sarai the king deeded his entire property to her, and gave her the land of Goshen as her hereditary possession: for this reason the Israelites subsequently lived in that land . He gave her also his own daughter Hagar as slave.
On the journey to Egypt, Abraham hid his wife Sarah, in a chest in order that no one might see her. At the frontier the chest had to pass through the hands of certain officials, who insisted on examining its contents in order to determine the amount of duty payable. When it was opened a bright light proceeded from Sarai's beauty. Every one of the officials wished to secure possession of her, each offering a higher sum than his rival.
Until Palestine improve freedom rights in their own country this for all people and this should include their women only then will I listen to their complaints they have against Israel. Their women should have right to have medical service to have a baby, have rights to be protected from abusive boyfriend, right to education, protection against rapist. If you believe Abraham, he was good to Sarah protecting her against Egyptian Pharaoh who lusted after her.
Why to do Palestinian woman have to wait for an hour for ambulance who is in labor to give birth?
A Palestinian woman is beaten by her boyfriend, who does not report to Palestinian police because she knows they will not help her.
A woman in Palestine who is raped cannot file complaint if she does not have a male relative to file for her. what if they are all dead from illness or war or being a terrorist?
You want to talk about human rights, why did the Moslem terrorists attack the twin towers of NY if they wanted the US support? why are women in Palestine not allowed to have college education? why are woman in Moslem countries treated like a slave?
Israel has been kingdom for 1000 years, then the people scattered because of invasion of other countries, 1948 they had become nation again. Long Live Israel.
Israel has the right to protect their own country not bow down to Palestine or any other country. They lived in that country for more than thousand years since King David.
You have never been in concentration camp have you? I personally met a couple who were children in concentration camp, they still have branding tattoo on their shoulders. I wonder how you would be if you had to face brutal guard and life like this and wonder when next person is going die?
Some people believe that the Holocaust was a punishment for the Jews' rejection of Jesus as Messiah. What they forget is that the Jews, though human and prone to failure like all of us, were persecuted first and foremost as God's people, which is to be considered an honor. Is the silver being "punished" by being thrust into the fire? Or is it rather being refined?
A word of caution: The refinement of Israel is far from over. The same is true of the refinement of the church.
Very sad to watch. But Robert Clary is such a great talent. I've always been a big fan of his. It took a lot of guts to go back to where the horrifying events of the Holocaust happened. What do you suppose Robert Clary would say if he read or heard the testimony of Jewish pastors Richard, Sabina, and Michael Wurmbrand? They survived the Communist occupation of Romania. Richard suffered torture for 14 years at the hands of the Communists.
I'd expect it must have been somewhat difficult to go through something as terrible and vile as this and then to act in "Hogan's Heroes". It's my favourite show and Mr.Clary is someone I would very much love to meet.
