The opening for the overall show (Fred and Barney Meet The Thing, that is, not just the Thing segments) shows Kelly and her father trying to cure the Thing (i.e., turn him back into the adult Ben Grimm), but accidentally turn him into a teenager instead. One episode involved them trying to cure him again (and having him spend the entire episode randomly changing from Benji to the Thing), but ended, of course, with the status quo intact.
i watched these during the time it aired. corny? yes. fun ? yes. will i watch it again i still watch it. tv today SUCKS. so i'll stick to stuff i now i enjoyed and still do. i think i'll cancel dish net or who ever is trying run the tv air waves.
"Both short lived Saturday morning programs (the 1978 Fantastic Four cartoon & Fred and Barney Meet The Thing) did a pretty good job of bastardizing and cheapening the FF mythos. Neither came a Thing's Ring throw to capturing the World's Greatest Comic Magazine as the 1960s Hanna Barbera FF cartoon with its infectious jazzy theme score. Even as an eager, Marvel-loving kid, watching those Bronze Age FF cartoons, you were well aware of this... and disappointed!"
@cha5 But hey even The King had to eat and support his family during this era,
All character design work for Hanna-Barbera (Ruby Spears) ranging from the memorable (Thundarr) and the not so memorable (Fred & Barney Meet The Thing, Scooby Doo) put money in the Kirby koffers.
@cha5 The only good thing too come from this cartoon was that they used Jack Kirbys artwork has the basis for The Thing in this show. Other then that, I don't remember much of anything else on the series.
@hulkster46a Yeah it sounds like in this article from The Kirby Collector 55 called 'Hollywood Connections' that this particular Thing show was run in a halfassed crapshoot style manner "This Thing's tenure wasn't as solid as a rock. The show was re-titled 'Fred And Barney Meet The Schmoo' after producers quickly shuffled in Al Capp's gurgling blob"
I remember when I first known of this coming on saturday morning I thought this was going to be based on the Marvel comic book version of the Thing!
I was so ticked off when I first saw this garbage!
I was expecting to see him fight real comic book foes like Dr Doom or The Hulk!
Not a petty motorcycle gang or the ANNOYING YANKEE DOODLE BIRD! When I saw the YANKEE DOODLE BIRD I was done with this show and lost all respect for Marvel Comics and HB for this CRAP!
@RatBatSpiderCrab One has to keep in mind, that because marvels efforts to get their shows on saturday morning were derailed for 10 solid years, they were very desperate back then, to get their shows back on the air. They compromissed their standards greatly.Their 1970s efforts, are most painful to watch.
My, I remember watching some episodes of this......and that Cracked article is right: It's the worst marvel cartoon ever. But, thanks to wonders of technology, more people will know that actually exist, not just some people's bad acid trip.
Alright, I'm not crazy. I always used to think of this whenever I heard of the Thing, since I saw this when I was little and it was my first introduction to him. Everyone I've ever talked to about this told me I was making it up, but it's real. I knew it!
Why the heck didnt he push the truck! It would have been far easier and resulted in no property damage! Then again he is just a kid so I doubt he thought things through that thoroughly.
Yep, it's been stuck in my head as well. But why upload just a clip. Please if you have whole epps upload 1 and all. I know many fans would love to see them again. I missed most of them cause my evil Step-father controlled the TV on Sat morn n it was nothing but back to back Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show, Silvester n Tweedy, Daffy n Speedy Show n so on. The same shows over n over forever so that now I can never get enough Super Hero Cartoons.
I liked the way the Thing was drawn in this series, Kirby did some character designs for the show. They should make an update of the show, but drop the HB part of if. Maybe go more for the look of the Fantastic Four second season. lol. Still great memories.
@Stablemable2 I was so mad at how the Thing was portrayed in this, but still I watched the show every Saturday when it was on. I just couldn't resist watching even a bad adaptation of Thing.
According the H/B's extended universe, Ben Grimm was cured of his condition. The side effect, it made him younger. He would age normal and have the rings, to change back anytime.
I remember watching this cartoon as a kid sometime in the late '70s-early '80s, even then I thought this cartoon was terrible. For some weird reason the Thing, the coolest member of the Fantastic 4, was made into a teenager who turned back into the Thing by use of some magic rings.I thought the whole thing was stupid & made no sense.
@Lfdjake91 I remember this too when I was a kid in the late 70's. I really didn't like it ; it always bothered me when he turned into the thing. It was sort of stupid & made no sense if you look at it.
I'm pretty sure one episode specifically said that the Thing turned into a teenager because of a "cure" gone wrong. In another episode, he tried another cure that was supposed to turn him back into his normal adult self, but (after an episode of comic hijinx caused by him turning back and forth at random), it didn't work and nothing happened (of course), restoring the show's status quo. (Kelly calls for him as "Mr. Grimm?" when she's not sure whether the cure worked or not)
I used to watch this cartoon when I was little. This was before I had even heard of the Fantastic 4, so Imagine how blown my mind was when I learned of them.
Remember Marvel fans. This happened and we let it happen

Even by 1970's cheapo, braindead Hanna Barbara standards, this is idiotic.

@14DaveHunter So why did "Benjy" Grimm loose his NYC Lower East Side accent? when he got younger?
you don't need to answer that,
One interesting thing is that Ben's cocreator Jack 'The King' Kirby
did some character design work for this show.
