  • Michael Foot rip (July 23 2010 - would have been his 97th birthday)

  • No its not illegal but its very underhand, many people belive this tripe as fact.

When the Tory press switched to supporting Labour it was because the conservative government was failing and newspaper circulation was at an all time low the press needed to do something in order to claim they were on the side of the public, Rats leaving a sinking ship! and anyhow they did not dish out quite the same level of propaganda as they did while supporting the Tories.

  • Murdoch has a massive news and media organisation that is able to reach into every living room throughout the entire Western world and beyond. Much of its so-called news content is carefully designed to induce a particular bias toward a view that would be favourable to the view represented by the Murdoch propagandists.

These are the Torys who run the Tory Press don't let them influence you.

  • What an unbelievable piece of shit JuanMacready is.

Thank fuck most people are decent.

  • @JuanMacready Now your plucking figures out of the air and insulting disabled people!

Your going my job for me lol your exposing yourself as a bigoted simpleton, you will turn people away from your insidiously ridiculous beliefs and views thanks..ignore her folks.

  • The Tories Big Society is a big cop out all you will get is a big mess!!

Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in memory as the wish to forget it.

    We ain't forgotten the |Tories

  • @JuanMacready What a totally childish remark! with a remark like that you must be either a tory or BNP idiot. grow up

  • The well respected Mori poll (unlike the yougov for the sun) suggests that 49% of people are undecided or will change their minds come May 6th.?? don't forget what a miserable time Britain had last lime the Tories ere in power (long time ago).

Nothing fixes a thing so intensely in memory as the wish to forget it

  • could somebody please tell me what he says from 0:38-0:40?

  • @warriorprince1010 I was C.N.D. My Dad was C.N.D. People who C.N.D. were people who (strangely) thought it wrong to kill others with atom bombs

  • I had hoped that Michael Foot would have turned 100

  • He had what Healey called a 'hinterland,' and his tomes on Hazlitt, Swift and Byron are amongst the best. However, his politics were insane. Nuclear disarmament is a great ideal, but disarming when Britain had hundreds of Soviet missiles aimed against it was irresponsible. Having a planned economy would be disastrous as the Russians and Chinese found out. Foot should have stuck to academia and left politics to those mature enough to participate it in.

  • Mmmmmm 19 years, therefore doesn't understand true socialism, as has never seen it. Learn before you comment little boy

  • Oh don't be a patronising pillock you insufferable little fool. I don't need to be a soldier to oppose the foreign adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq. I don't need to have fought in WW1 to know it was a human catastrophe of epic proportions. But I have lived for 13 years under a socialist government that has nationalised more of the economy than Tony Benn could have dreamed of doing.

  • Now they've moved on to the EUSSR.

  • I particularly like the reference to Mr [Herbert] Morrison - grandfather, lest we forget, of that great modern democrat Peter Mandelson. I can imagine the grandson acting in just the way Foot imagined his grandfather.

  • Mr Foot was a fine man who will be long remembered by people in Britain who care about justice. Frank Clanton, on the other hand, is an arse.

  • So Frank Clanton what have you achieved in your life that can hold a torch too the late Mr Foot. How can you be glad someones is dead what did he ever do to you. If god forbid you had died before Foot do you think he would have even noticed you whatever your opinion of his politics and lid a fullfilling life doing things and working in things he sincerly believed sure Foot would not have spent his time posting coments on the internet when he was young he was up and doing

  • He's blocked, im not having that.

  • @FrankClanton

That comment speaks volumes about your mentality.

  • @FrankClanton

    Bang bang

I'm glad that Frank Clanton is dead.

  • The last honest politician of Principle. First, Barbara Castle gone and now him. Where are their likes today???

  • Its all well and good being principled, but what if those principles would have left Britain defenceless in the face of Soviet agression? (ie CND)

  • I doubt Foot ever took money from anyone in a corrupt manner. And as for you Trillions$u take your views, based on prejudice and hate, and stuff them up your rectum, then follow them there.

  • A great socialist - RIP Michael

  • A truly great man. Rest in Peace Michael.

  • RIP Michael. A great man, a great mind and a great orator. There is no one of his calibre in British politics today. He had more principles in his little finger than Tony Bliar and Jack Straw-man have between them.

  • @Alscotts Agree, a man of ethics. I didn't know him personally, but I loved him, and his little dog, Dizzy. He was 96, but still what a huge loss to the human race. Dear fellow. Caring man,

humanitarian. My highest respects go with him.

  • He was a CUNT. I'm glad he's dead.

  • @JuanMacready @JuanMacready

    Keep YouTube safe!!

To report JuanMacready Go to: youtube com/safety_help

    Keep YouTube safe!!

FrankClanton the CUNT is DEAD LOL

  • When great men become great men of history, our world, of the present, is diminished.

  • RIP Michael Foot. It is good to see even his opponents now have a good word to say about him. His speech during the 1979 confidence motion is one of the finest ever made in the House of Commons.

  • Compare this to Tony Blair's spineless arselicking of Rupert Murdoch and his vile empire. Love or loathe MIchael Foot, he was a man of genuine conviction.

  • RIP a man with imbued great integrity and intellectual honesty.

  • RIP comrade. A very very sad day

And Thatcher still lives - there is no justice

  • An eccentric and individualist in the days when non conformity was acceptable.A great sense of humour too.

  • Great man and orator.

  • RIP

  • Truly the end of an era. Thanks Michael. A life well lived...

  • A great loss to the world and to civilisation itself.

What a great life. Thank you.

  • RIP my old friend

  • Goodbye Michael Foot, i will miss you very much.

  • We have lost a great man today.

    Michael Foot: 23rd July 1913 - 3rd March 2010.

  • not my favourite - far too far to the left and his pacifism was wrong if heartfelt. But a fine orator as this clip shows.

  • Safe Journey Mr. Foot

  • He'll be basking on the shores of heaven actually.

  • the man just died. do you have no respect?

  • Indeed, RIP Mr Foot, best Labour leader we never had. And in response to googlexxxxxxx I would suggest you hang your head in shame, but you obviously have no idea of the meaning of the word. Shame on you....

  • I know about shame all too well, chum

  • RIP Mr. Foot!

    A very intelligent man!

  • RIP Mr Foot.

  • You forgot the murder of the young innocent conscripts on the General Belgrano.

  • He's still alive today! He's 97

  • @Channelingus

Now at 12:30 on the 3rd march 2010 he is dead

  • @Malthus0 :( thanks for telling me though

  • Thank you for your reply and for posting the clip. I wish there were more clips from those days especially of Aneurin Bevan.

  • Michael Foot is clearly talking about a specific incident with his reference to the Daily Mirror and Mr Morrison. Can anyone please enlighten me what the incident was and what the date of this clip is.

  • the government censored the mirror, and every paper (led by foot) printed the story in question for several days until the ban was lifted.

    google: 2d michael foot

    or

    18b michael foot

  • If people viewing the debate between me and IndieModPunk wish to view my lengthy response to his list of Tory 'errors' below, please send me a message through youtube and I will send it to you. It is far too large and wouldn't even fit into 10 different comment boxes.

  • Very inconspicious way of avoiding my points sir... I will do you the courteousy of responding to this over the private message system as there are too many points to be addressed in 500 characters.

  • The Attlee government ended in economic calamity. The Attlee government only managed to nationalise the economy because Lord Keynes secured financial assitance from the USA. The efficient industries were nationalised, and they consequently became basket cases. The NHS was and still is a mistake, a Soviet era relic that has no place in a modern, liberal (classical defintiion) democracy.

I will have to reply to your replies tomorrow, as I have an appointment with the BBC and Hustle.

  • Human beings are not born equally, and to suggest so is facile. Inequality is not a bad thing. If Bill Gates walks into a pub filled with millionaires, wealth inequality will be high, but that dosen't mean everyone is poor.

Socialism is very similar to Nazism. Socialism and Fascism are siblings, which is why the struggle between the two ideologies has been so violent. Both take the individual down the 'Road to Serfdom.' The state enslaves us, and we end up with a kleptocracy.

  • Socialism is inimical to democracy. The best thing about capitalism is that one can be a socialist in a capitalist system because one can voluntarily distribute one's own wealth. One cannot be a capitalist in a socialist society however. If a person decides to voluntarily redistribute his/her wealth and to nationalise their properties, that is their perogative. It should remain the choice of the individual... it should not be forced upon the citizenry by coercion.

  • Socialism has never worked, and it cannot work, because planning is impossible. Hayek, in a seminal essay, 'The Use of Knowledge in Society,' explained that nobody has perfect knowledge, and that a central planning committee cannot replicate the productive and distributive efficiency of the decision making of millions of consumers in a market economy. Prices are determined by supply and demand. Without these forces, there is no rational mechanism for setting prices, which can lead to problems

  • Capitalism simply means the means of production are privately owned as opposed to collectively owned. Economic calculation makes capitalism the most economically rational and sound form of society. As Adam Smith so brilliantly elucidated in the Wealth of Nations, the baker who pursues his own self interest enriches the community as a whole merely as a by product of his self interest.

  • I disagree with everything that Michael Foot espouses, but I admire his intellect and his obvious passion for politics. One can hear it in his speehces in the House of Commons, his lofty rhetoric, his witty demolition of Keith Joseph being a perfect example of this.

Racism is a form of socialism however in my view, because socialism seeks to place people into groups and sects, which is what racism does. As Ron Paul so eloquently put it, libertarianism is the enemy of racism.

  • I don't agree with everything Powell said, but one cannot deny his intellect or his linguistic capabilities. The House of Commons is full of non-entities now. In previous decades, it was composed of intellectuals and passionate advocates of respective ideologies who could make a sound, structured argument, like Powell and Foot. Now it is full of charlatans and careerists.

  • 'linguistic capabilities'? How does your vocabulary possibly help make you a politician in the world today? Im sure there are millions of people with great 'linguistic capabilities', but that hardly means they should all become politicians. A good politician is made great by his policies, not his 'linguistic capabilities'.

  • Wit is an essential tool for a good politician.

Besides, you are operating under the assumption than Enoch Powell was a racist. He wasn't. He was an old fashioned English patriot. His language in the Rivers of Blood speech has been mendaciously quoted out of context. He quotes Roman politicians, hence the somewhat exotic vocabulary. Powell was wrong about immigration, but he wasn't a racist, so stop insinuating that he was.

  • Yes we do. Michael Foot and Enoch Powell were good friends, and they cooperated to prevent reform of the House of Lords, though for different purposes.

  • I was his neighbor in Hampstead in 1995 and 1996, living there as an ex-pat. It was quite the honor to see and talk with this man. And I'll never forget his bellowing demand to his dog: "DIZZY!!!"

  • How predictable, a hard left socialist living in a very nice house in a very nice suburb of London.

However, one must pay tribute to Mr Foot. He was one of the most perspicacious and witty politicians of the 20th century, and he possessed a great deal of alacrity.

That is the problem with 21st century politics. There are no more ideological debates. The fabled middle ground has destroyed the political process.

We need people like Michael Foot and Enoch Powell in politics again.

  • Michael Foot is one of the few reason's why I am proud to be from Devon.

    A true Left-winger and Socialist.

Unlike Phoney Tony and Bail-out Brown

Which is why he never became be PM.

    He supports the Argyle too.

  • @JONNOG88 he's also an honourary member of Argyle

  • Ah if only there were more Michael Foots in this world and in our politics. Don't forget that he is still with us! At 96

  • The best editor the Evening Standard ever had...

  • micheal foot 96 years old and still alive, living legend

  • Such a great man. 96 last month.

  • A wonderful example of how to be a man.

I often wonder what he thinks of the likes of

    Griffin from the BNP

  • yeah he's cool.

and they said he was too old to be PM. That he was on the verge of senility, and too left-wing cause he wanted to nationalize banks and shit.

    and who's laughing now? Him!!!

Because 1) he outlasted most of those M-Fkers. 2) He's still lucid (see johann hari's excellent article for more on this), and oh S--t!! 3) they had to nationalize some of the banks.
