Sorry to sound like a prick... But... People compare because the problem with Paul Potts (although he's pretty good for a cellphone salesman!! I must say !! seriously not too bad) is that POP culture idolizes him as an Opera God. He's not really very good in comparison to Pavarotti, Mario Lanza, Enrico Caruso, Jussi Bjorling, etc... If you want goosebumps that'll stand about an inch taller watch those guys!!! You'll be delighted!! Anyway, Congratulations Paul Potts you deserve the success!
To all the people on here who have nothing better to do than argue semantics and such forth...get your heads out of your asses and get a life! If you don't think he sings opera and you want to hear opera, watch a different Youtube video, I'm tired of these fanatics posting messages on here...if you hate it that much, go blow yourself up in protest! He's a good singer, he's got talent, he caught a break, and he's a nice guy! So fuck off!
I am so glad you have the nerve to write it as it is; I dont know why people just want to compare; they should just listen and enjoy his wonderful voice which by the way gives me goosebumps all the time;
Unfortunately, people cannot resist the opportunity to put someones talents down, and for what reason? It has been my experience that the worst offenders are lacking what they criticize most mercilessly.
Opera singer or not, Time To Say "Chill", he is singing songs that have been around for years, sang by many people with different background, different styles, accent, etc ...and has been able to capture thousands/millions of hearts; I say cherish the new breath of fresh air, enjoy the moment! and be happy for the guy. My other point is, he made it, he rose from the dark ( millions of us who wish, hope, sing during showers) and is leaving his dream in broad day light. Bet you can't beat that !
To you all, Paul might not be an opera singer, who cares? I think he is. He is bringing me to tears and that is, what it's all about. Music is emotions. Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Germany...Still....Hugs and kisses for you in the UK for sharing something so wonderful with the rest of world.

Its awful an opera singer singing a musicals song just dosent work musical theatre and opera are totally different things to sing musical theatre you need 2 make people belive what your singing.
I'm really glad that I can have a real argument with people about this rather than people who don't know what you're talking about, it really sounds as though you do, so thanks! :) My comeback then, would be that this is Music of the Night, from a musical, so then he would be a musical theatre singer, and the other song I saw was a Josh Groban one, so I don't think that he only sings opera. I do agree with you that people will see him as an opera singer, which is what irks me.
Also, I just noticed your previous comment...really? It's easy to project over an orchestra? That must be why the world is swarming with Wagnerian singers.
I said that *learning* to project over an orchestra is not difficult. If one balances the sound one makes through the different resonators one can create frequencies that are higher than those an orchestra creates and is then heard "over" it. It doesn't take great power, just creating these frequencies. It takes practice and and the ability to relax and reasonable health. I'm not sure about Wagnerian singers. I thought that called for sheer power, but for different reasons.
Have you ever watched Jose Carerras' recording of West Side Story with Leonard Bernstein? It's in a recording studio, and yet the quality of singing is not deteriorated. My main point is that everyone seems to be thinking that he's an opera singer, and in my opinion - which is what the comment section in intended for - Paul Potts is a pop singer, not an opera one.
I predict in time he will be recognized as a great one. He's got a voice that average non-opera people actually want to listen to, and while singing opera, not pop music. I've never bought one opera CD in my life but I'll be buying this guys CD.
For you people saying he is noy an opera singer give me & him a break. He sings, he sings opera, so he is an opera singer. Time will tell if he becomes a famous singer. In five years you people being critical if he makes it will denigh you ever said your words.
I think this is the prove when someone is given a chance in their life time to do exactly what the love to do. Success always in their path. i got inspiration from his story and journey to come. and deep in our heart we are looking, for some people, for the thing that is really meant for us to do in this life. sometimes, we still wondering is this what i really want to do?? am i in the right place and field in our career?? and certainly i am feeling that way now.
If this is proof that even the average persons dream can come true, what about the people who study all their lives, who study their craft, and work and invest so much of their time and money and are never able to reach their goals? I'm not trying to sound so dark and depressed, but I don't think he is an inspiration, I just think he got very very lucky. At least he clearly loves to sing, that I will grant him.
That's all very possible, I'm not arguing against the recording, just against the people who seem to think that he's an opera singer, rather than a pop singer. And to camilot 5; he's not a Domingo Carreras or Pavarotti, and he never will be. He's not an opera singer. And if amateur's are getting the record deals, than they should be ready for criticism. And I wasn't comparing him to anyone. Simply stating that he is NOT an opera singer.
we have the case here of somebody born with an incredibly beautiful voice that for unknown reasons never got the chance to develop it. Now he gets a chance to show the world what an incredible gift he possess, he has never had any kind of formal training , like other opera titans. Allow me to respectfully disagree when you say that he will never become a Carreras or Pavarotti, he has the voice, he just needs the training. Only time will tell wether he will make it or not, I wish him the best!
I wish him the best in the field of pop opera singing and I think that he does great things for that. He actually has had formal training, it's a little known fact that has been widely broadcasted since his stardom, but personally, I think that he will have a great pop career, though I maintain he is not an opera singer.
AlisonBee, I do understand where you and other purists are coming from. To an extent I can sympathise or empathise with you. Paul is not taking part in opera productions. He is operating in the popular realm but singing songs from opera. Linguistics is something I have some little knowledge of and in my opinion you can argue this one both ways. It really is, as they say, a "semantic" argument. But I think the purists are defining "opera singer" rather narrowly.
As I have said before, folk singers sing folk, opera singers sing opera: so Paul is an opera singer. This is the way the public will see it and what a knowledge of linguistics shows us is that words are defined, whether we like it or not, by public usage. It pains me that the distinctions between certain words have been lost -- but history shows that the masses rule and small groups of "experts" cannot prevail against them.
He's a singer who sings operatic songs. When he has actually been in an opera, I'll concede he's an opera singer. I'm nat saying he couldn't do it - just that he hasn't. It's not a semantic - rather, it's pedantic!!!
Did you ever stop to think it was just the recording of this snippet? For God's sake give the guy some credit - we're not saying he's a Pavarotti, Domingo, or Carras - not yet. He has to start somewhere and BGT was his stage to do so...he doesn't need to be compared to anyone - he is his own star.
I agree that he will never be an "opera singer" but the whole orchestra being louder then him is a poor reason. Have you ever played at the back of an orchestra? I've played in many brass sections in orchestras and its hard enough to hear what the woodwind are doing sometimes! Also the acoustics of a studio are purposely dry so sound doesn't carry far. The sound recording for the vid is mic-ed next to the camera therefore obviously strings will dominate!
Alison Bee, that is nonsense. Learning to project over an orchestra is not difficult, but it is not possible when the orchestra is amplified. And here he is using a microphone, so if he drowned out the sound people have boobed. In an opera house the acoustics are different and the orchestra will not play loud while someone is singing. There are many opera singers with much weaker voices than Paul, and many opera houses are now amplified.
Wait a moment AlisonBee, I have just realised, that this is in a recording studio. It is not a concert. You are being extraordinarily ignorant. What we are hearing is a function of whoever recorded this from where ever they were. They are making a recording, this isn't the finished product. An opera star in this circumstances wouldn't try to project over the orchestra. The tracks will be mixed and balanced later.
I agree with you Sqid101. Also there is the element of needing to use a headset in the recording process, which can alter the whole dynamic. One more point is that in a live performance the singer stands in front of the orchestra towards the audience, not beside or in back of the orchestra, therefore naturally being able to project his voice.
My wife and I love the CD. I think the "Story" is part of what makes this all so magical and makes people weep when they hear him sing. Paul is what we all hope to be. He has found one thing that makes him happy and it doing it with all his heart. He has had financial and physical struggles. His wife is a jewel of a lady. Give me a woman like her with a special heart over someone who looks beautiful on the outside but has no substance on the inside.
Paul Potts' voice reveals the hidden power of God in man. We catch a glimpse of the transformation to the celestial. How else do you explain tears in the eyes of a man as myself, yet a motivation to rally as a champion as after a fight scene in Braveheart or Gladiator? If you read John Eldredge's Wild at Heart you will understand my context.
The proof really is in the C.D. It is about as beautiful and tastefully-crafted a piece of work as you can imagine--simple, straightforward, restrained, not overdone in any way with Paul's vocals simply blissful. He gives each song everything it needs and clearly believes every word he is singing, the trait of the true artist.
i m so glad that the dream of this normal average guy came true. its like a fairytale to him. look at the orchestra. at that moment in front there singing, i bet he feels like a million bucks.
Whenever greatness appears, the envious and mediocre start pelting sour grapes.
Paul Potts is the real deal. His name will live on. His talent will be appreciated when all the bleating billy goats have done nothing more than self-pushed You Tube videos and an occasional dog food advertisement.
Paul Pots you did it, the more experiance you get the more confidence you will get..its so nice to see someone in there 30's plus to get a chance for a change
I think you are missing the point here. He has managed to touch the hearts of millions of people. Now, many of these have trained ears, and many do not. I have seen and heard countless opera singers who have been...opera singers. They have been trained up to their eyeballs, yet could not come even close to Paul Potts' fabulous and inherent ability to move, to reach out and touch others emotionally.
Well said. I know nothing about opera. I do know that the second I heard Mr. Potts sing, I was hooked. Let's put it this way. I now play him in my car....this time last year that if someone said that I would be moved to tears by opera, I would have calle them a liar. What difference a year can make.
I agree with you. He has a haunting, emotional feel that most vocalists do not have. The majority of entertainment moguls are so narcisstic they cant seem to get over themselves. The fans that Paul will attract are those that truly appreciate his talent. He represents all of us: all of us who are that "average" guy. But who can use the word average anymore? Each of us are gifted by our creator,we just have to give in to it...This is living proof.
actually Pavarotti was very humble man, despite his great talent. Many great performers are filled with self-doubt, it is the drive to always strive for improvement. However, if Paul gets more people interested in opera, then that's great. He has a certain tenacity and you can tell he really wants it, so while he may not be the "best", he is certainly deserving and has his own unique way of connecting with people, and better connects with those who are far from being gods
@Thymesareachangin I've told people this a few times. Unfortunately, critics of classical and opera have spent so much time focusing on perfect pitch and vibrato , that they've completely forgotten that music is to touch people emotionally. Paul may not be perfect (i wouldn't know), but I dont know any other opera singer that connects so immediately with their voice. I just haven't heard it. People have tried to show me, but Paul always seems to have a hint of sadness in what he sings.
italy and france, the countries known for their opera are laughing at us... to an untrained aer he may sound good but if you're trained and know what t look for then there's a multitude of things he's doing wrong.
Lots of people never even try listening to opera because it seems so snobbish and--as your comment demonstrates--there's seeming consensus that opera is lost on "the uneducated." That attitude is not very welcoming.
This guy is a populist artist, not someone who is going to sing at the Met. You can tear apart any 'pop'ular singer technically, it's kind of easy... If listening to him makes average people connect to opera and feel good, who cares?
You can tear them apart technically, because the technicalities considered essential in opera are of no importance to a popular singer. They don't even attempt to adhere to them. In fact, sing a popular song opera style and it'll sound absurd.
The lack of humility in the presence of what can only be described as a gift from GOD staggers me. If GOD were to ask any of you to explain your criticism of his works how would you respond? If all you hear is music, then you have religuished an incredible opportunity for revelation. I pity you.
Please, angelofreiki, who cares about these esoteric technicalities. They have nothing to do with good singing. The opera paradigm is not the only way of assessing singing. And if it is only accessable to trained people it is not art. By sensible and rational standards he is not doing anything wrong.
If the examples of angelofreiki's own singing in the videos he's posted are examples of technical correctness, they demonstrate just how arid and absurd technical correctness can be. Check them out, if you want a laugh.
Your comment doesn't speak much of your education. Paul has sung for Pavarotti and has been trained in a fine Italian school. Many Opera connoisseurs think Paul is very good. "Not the best" - Matter of opinion and probably true. "Crap"- Matter of ignorance.
Indeed, no negative comments. He touches people´s heart and soul. Music of then night is musical and not opera but who cares. It is so beautiful. And so is Paul. I only hope he remains a simple guy after this succes. If he does he will become one of the great. God bless you Paul!!! I hope the boys that bullied you are green with envy today and every other day for the rest of their lives.
Nuts to all the destructive negative commentators! People with, and people without musical training or awareness agreed long ago that Paul's tenacity would get him to realise yet more of his beautiful voice, and here's the first item confirming that. Even with the terrible sound quality of these two studio clips, we can hear magic. Patience, the CD will soon grace my door-mat.
Just put both these new exclusive video's on Paul's myspace page, and blogs and bulletins, SO many people have emailed about these in the past hour, these are BRILLIANT, i've told them all to come here and leave messages, FANTASTIC....
Untrained working class noboby: That was Paul. Mostly likely fits the description of the people bitching about him. Hop up on the stage & do it better. i think he's crap to be honest...
italy and france, the countries known for their opera are laughing at us... to an untrained aer he may sound good but if you're trained and know what t look for then there's a multitude of things he's doing wrong.

Yes Perhaps but your forgetting one thing , he's only begun and will steadily improve. he has a gift and You can't deny that!!
