  • Since you're actually close-miking, my advice would be to back off on the gain a bit, up the mids and add a bit of compression on the recorded signal. Also a clean boost before the preamp does wonders for driving that first gain stage a bit harder.

  • @AndyBearman Thanks for the tips, mate. I should actually rename this "Stoner Rock Test" as I've done some more in depth testing with this amp quite recently using a Laney Hardcore Series quad with Celestion Rocket 50s. Using just the non-AOR channel and no clean boost it kicks out some brilliant metal tones that are really tight. The secret is in the EQ. Kick in the AOR and you're in serious stoner rock territory or simply an amazing, fluid solo sound. I should really do a demo of it.

  • Tuning is fucking dreadful. You're running a great amp with this sludge. Tune up, dude.

  • @Topophobia I have to own up to some truly attrocious playing, Topo. The Yamaha is actually perfectly in tune if you listen to the riffs. Unfortunately my "soloing" is completely tuneless. So blame it on me. I should actually have recorded more fluent single note stuff and not tried to be a guitar hero..... :o(

And yeah, it's a brilliant amp. It sounds best through a quad.

  • Thank you.Kind man.....

  • Dude u sound just like Grand Nagus of Ferengi! XD

  • @PRCpower Mmmm, I'm mystified by your strange comment so my response is...... get a life, you sad trekkie! :oD

  • They certainly do have a real fuzzy stoner sound although I was mucking around playing some 80s metal with it the other day and it was quite suitable for that too.

I really need to put together a quad for mine with Celestion speakers which are no more than 25w each to gain the best clarity. A 30w amp shouldn't have to push more than 100w worth of speakers.

  • I had a an old laney 100 watt laney pro tube lead head, it was before the aor series came out. I don't even think I have ever seen another one like it. It had a hell of lot of gain. I used it in this stoner metal band I was in. It had a real stoner black sabbath esque sort of voice. I can hear it in your tone as well. These old laneys were intended to keep up with Marshall jcm 800s etc but the tone was way more fuzzy and stoner. Your amp sounds great. Keep those heavy riffs comin.
