  • 0:08 Thats a Virgin Trains Voyager :)

  • One of my favourite all-time ads.

  • Most of this advert was filmed in Cumbria !!! Beautiful !

  • I revisit this ad from time to time for the Christmas feeling that it evokes.

Every time there seems to be a new comment about what's going on with the Chinook.

Lighten up people. This is an ad, to encourage people to shop at Waitrose for their Christmas goodies.

Does it matter whether the guy is a soldier an oil worker or a photographer. He's not real! The idea is to portray the need for all to get home to be with their loved ones for the festive season.

  • Waitrose and John Lewis Ads are amazing. As I was watching this one I did reflect on an almost depressing fact : That adverts like this are far more watchable, entertaining and uplifting than the majority of production programmes that the ads are supposed to punctuate.

  • <3 it!

  • I absolutely love this advert, it sums up waitrose in 1 minute. caring! Maxlogica, i suggest you look deeper into the principles of this advert! it is not glorifying the fact that british soldiers are DOING THEIR DUTY out in the middle east! it is stating the fact that family morals are important in todays society, and besides, you cannot conclude your uneducated comments from what you see here without knowing the true story. I myself am a partner for waitrose, so i know what they stand for!

  • The vids great but the comments are more entertaining. Soldier? What soldier? 1 - that was not a military helicopter, you can tell by the lack of any markings. It was green thats all. 2 - The man they focused on inside the helicopter wasnt wearing any type of uniform. Look again. Hes wearing dark grey trousers, a beige wind-cheater waistcoat and a black shirt (44 secs). Hes also not carrying any standard military bag, it looks like a photographers pack. byeeeeeeee

  • Sorry but that is definately a military Chinook . You don't get many civvie chinooks in britain . Probably filmed at RAF oldiham home of the chinook

  • @Givemeafukingname - he also has a camera :)

  • roll on Christmas!

  • I love soppy christmas ads, its almost here people!

  • When ever I see this ad I know its christmas. Im not dumb its a great advert..

  • My spine's tingling.... this is hauntingly mesmerising, like siren's song. I wish that it was longer, it's the only advert I ever properly listened to and I'm still listening to it 8 months on :) Oh and people who are debating over the whole soldier issue... just agree to disagree... it (was) christmas when you started arguing, lighten up :)

  • Best crimbo ad :)

  • I loved this advert. Yeah its May, but not long till Christmas :P

  • Very sweet when her dad returns home and they hug ;]

  • ... I just got goosebumps for like a whole minute solid...

  • im a waitrose partner, and i do think everyone looking into this wayyyyy to much!!!!! but waitrose is a british company so if it wants to show a british soldier coming back then it should!! also i think ppl shud think b4 they write. and the soldiers should all b brought home!!!!! :D

  • Great advert. My uncle has been working at waitrose for 8 years now!

  • I think your all looking into it just abit to much,it's just a food advert ffs

  • This advert always makes me smile. I like the song as well :)

  • An absolutely fantastic vocalist.......best thing I've heard for years!

  • Its called

How can I keep from singing by Camilla Kerslake

  • I Licked My Noseeeeeeeeee :)

  • What is the name of the song?

  • @TeamHeavySuck

'How Can I Keep From Singing?'

This version is by Camilla Kerslake, but it's been recorded by several people, another notable version being by Eva Cassidy

  • what is the name of this song and who by??

  • murdered lots of iraqi women and children hahahaha good, just use one bomb and end it now.

  • If people like maxlogica look carefully at the person who exits the helicopter you will see he is not wearing any army uniform or fatigues. He is also carrying cameras and a bellingham back. He is in fact a photographer, the implication being he has been reporting on the conflict. There are no guns or weapons in sight its your mind filling in the blanks and you are seeing what you want to see rather than engaging your brain and simply looking at the images.

  • A very educated comment -

    I agree with Stu -

    Look at the facts first

    DC

  • Maxlogica... before you continue to jump to your uneducated conclusions, let me inform you off something; The soldier in question, featured in this advert, was landing in a Chinook, thats a helicopter! Now do we fly to America in helicopters? No! Furthermore, If he was returning from Iraq, after and I quote "after he has murdered thousands of iraqi and afghan women and children" he'd be wearing desert camouflage... not a green outfit! If you find British institutions so offensive, don't stay here

  • I love British institutions considering Im British myself so your accusations are completely and utterly unfounded, totally baseless and devoid of any sense whatsoever...what I find offensive, extremely offensive is a soldier, whose sole purpose is to destroy another human being being glorified and displayed as some pillar of society in this stomach churning advertisment. No doubt you are happy to see innocent civilians murdered in the name of this filthy oil/drugs war but I'm not, shame on you.

  • I wonder how much of that comment was Dictionary based!!

  • God, your a dickhead. You shame the entire British population, people like you make me ashamed, you are probably some opinionated chav. Shame on YOU!

Ultimate respect for the British Armed Forces, whether in a war you agree with or not, they're still our boys who deserve to,but can't be home.

  • @maxlogica YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF WHAT YOU HAVE JUST SAID THERE. Our soldiers risk their lives to save people like you safe! They are not axes of evil or what ever your trying to explain here, they are human beings just like you bringing peace and stability to countries which have been suffering for years. I FIND YOUR COMMENT AND YOUR VIEWS OFFENSIVE.

  • shame on you! if it wasnt for the brave men and women that fight for us, there is a very high chance people like you and i would be dead right now. im geussing you object to WWI & WW2 then aswell.

  • LUUV IT!xX

  • A beautiful song and advert. It moves me and makes me feel Christmassy.

  • The fact waitrose are glorifying a returning britsh soldier after he has murdered thousands of iraqi and afghan women and children and returns to the UK as some sort of father figure and hero is truly sickening..he tucks into xmas turkey while thousands of orphaned children spend

  • That's a little harsh don't you think?

The advert is trying to show how he is still thinking of Christmas when he's over there and he's thinking of his family back home. It's more touching than anything else. Although it depends on what side you're on.

  • It is not a matter of 'sides' my dear...it's a matter of british soldiers being displayed as some sort of hero in these disgusting waitrose adverts when they have returned from their 'duty' of massacre in iraq and afghanistan killing innocent women and children in the name of oil and drugs...

  • Their duty is to protect this country from foreign threat and terrorists.

Besides they are out their to rebuild the country not to destroy it. It's not the soldier's faults that their country is messed up and they're blowing themselves and other innocent people up. They're defending this country and helping another country.

In this day and age we need to be defended.

The advert is merely reminding us of the fact that their are british soldiers out there who won't be home for christmas.

  • i'm sorry..."discusting waitrose adverts"

family returning home to their loved ones for christmas, you see that as disgusting?.

you are a retard, it's christmas advert... proberly not the best place for your lecture on the war me thinks

  • opinions, opinions, opinions!

  • Only "Holidays Are Coming" beats this as a Christmas advert. Love it!

  • beutiful song

  • The song is called "How Can I Keep From Singing" by Camilla Kerslake. Available now on Spotify!

  • can anyone tell me the name of the song please???

  • How can i keep from singing = Camilla Kerslake

  • This advert is romantising war. Provoking good feeling? It kind of reminds me that my partner is out there and he won't have a xmas. But if it makes everyone else feel better than enjoy the propaganda- think of the families here and the forces staff out there alone. Thanks alot Waitrose.

  • The idea is that everyone is coming home. By adding a reference to the army and our forces, it was a way of saying that Waitrose, like everybody else, thinks its time they all came home

  • Romantising war? You're referring to just one scene in the whole advert. And besides, how does a person getting off a military helicopter romanticise war? Its a Supermarket, not a mouthpiece for the government.

  • @KaMiK2205 i agree, im a vegan and dont like meat but i still adore this advert n the christmasy spirit in it .

  • Your partner is out there murdering innocent women and children who will spend their xmas crying until their eyes are sore, how do you feel being the partner of someone who destroys innocent iraqi and afghan's lives all in the name of a oil and drugs war, how many children has your 'partner' murdered so far eh?

  • maxlogica - I am proud to be British and support our brave men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan and you should be ashamed of yourself. If you are a pacifist, then good for you, but keep you immature and unfeasable opinions to yourself. How dare you ridicule the partners of soldiers and make purile jokes regarding how many lives they may or may not have taken. If you disagree with the British war policy so strongly, leave and go to Iraq, because you don't deserve to live her to be honest!

  • @maxlogica

Have photographers murdered many people in Iraq for drugs?

  • Sugar coated sickly schmaltz and enough to make you want to puke up those "all butter" mince pies.

More realism is needed...like a drunken punch up at Midnight Mass, a huge family row, or that liitle old lady at the start feeding coins into a gas meter.

  • Your hilarious! Honestly

  • Great advert!

  • Pure schmultz! Fantastic!

  • im in for that album! its amazing!!

This song is a particular favourite but "she moves through the fair" is also outstanding.

  • Camilla Kerslake it's also promoting her debut album...

  • I think the advert and the song are uplifting, who is the singer?

  • I agree with arteddie. Christmas is about acknowledging life for what it is - those who have family working in afghanistan, people who don't have any family at all. It isn't all Kerry Katona and Slade. This ad recognises that and takes a refreshing tone from the usual drivel.

  • Well this advert is alot better than the crap Asda and Tesco churn out. Buy this for £1 and get another free etc. Tesco and Asda is all about cheap cheap cheap and who wants a cheap Christmas when we all want to enjoy ourselves with a bit of luxury for the 1st time this year due to the credit crunch. And lets not forget all our soldiers in Afghanistan who wont be home for Christmas. Lets be happy that Waitrose acknowledges this rather than Tesco's and Asda.

  • This isn't as good as the version from last year! Still a beautiful song though. I'm so excited for Christmas! :D

  • Waitrose should be ashamed of themselves. Utterly exploitative.

  • Aren't they all?

  • It does not demonstrate a happy medium, it is one constant dreary depressing mood and tone.

  • As sound engineer that creates adverts, this has to be the most depressing Xmas advert.

The other supermarkets and retail business, want their customers to feel happy and content and use music that fits, this music just makes you want to slit your wrists.

  • shud hav used last years song, was alot better version

  • @remootcom You obviously need some more experience or understanding of purchasing markets.

The "happy clappy" adverts we see, actually, don't appeal to a large majority of the population as much as this advert does.

  • The sound engineer surely has only a small say in what the client wants for an ad for their product. Waitrose have gone for something different to Tesco, M&S, Boots, Asda etc. The sound here hasn't made me, or any of my family or friends, want to slit our wrists so I'm sorry it makes you feel that way. It makes me want Christmas to hurry up so I can be with my family.

  • Isn't it far more depressing them showing a returning british soldier after he has murdered innocent iraqi/afghan women and children for the sake of oil/drugs? Shame on waitrose..

  • Sounds like a sped up version of last years and i think they should stop using that Chinook . not very appropriate considering the shortfall of such birds in afghanistan

  • Not all RAF Chinooks can be deployed in Afghanistan. Chinooks have to remain in the UK for training purposes, scheduled exercises and support for disaster relief.

  • in fact i feel that the chinook provoke feeling in people. a good feeling in a way, to think about all those british troops out there who wont be with family for Christmas.

  • What about the 'shortfall' of family members for iraqi and afghan citizens after british soldiers have massacred their family members for oil and drugs?

  • Impressive advert. The photography is stunningly beautiful.

  • i dont think this version of this song is as good as last years advert. But the advert it self which is almost the same as last years is better.
