Actually guys, litttlebirdy is correct. When you're racing by the wall lean onto it. You will end up in the wall going through a tunnel. Problem is, the penguin says you cheated if you go through the tunnel...

How do you manage to the jump so you land under the penguin?

I either end up falling off of the level or sliding down the course. Is there a way to jump down during the race and keep going? or is that cheating?

I managed to do this, but for some reason, I didn't land on my feet and get the penguin to challenge me. When I hit the bottom I just slid to the end.

Sometimes interactive objects (like enemies) are "unloaded" to allow other objects to be loaded without having to keep track of too many things on the screen at once. I guess Koopa disappears because there's lots of stuff in Battlefield so he's unloaded, but there's not many things in this slide besides that penguin and maybe they didn't bother?

If you jump close to the big penguin, and then jump away from him very quickly, sometimes the glitch works. It takes really good timing though.

Lol, yeah the penguin definitely is dumb. He doesn't notice if Mario starts near the finish line just as long as he doesn't take any shortcuts after the race begins, ridiculous :-)
