@doommmmmmm ps3= Nvidia 7800 GTX, Xbox360 =ATI x1950 series these are the approximate PC equivalent of graphics cards when those two consoles came out. ATI is all the way at 6800 series now and Nvidia is at 480GTX there have been 10 PC generations in the time span of 5 years and the consoles still got the same weak bullshit lol time to get out of that 720p world youre living in. @henryhenriquez Actually, POWER7 processors have up to 8 cores with 4 threads each. If I'm not mistaken, they are the most power commercialized processors today, and their only competition on that level of the enterprise market is Oracle's SPARC processors (up to 16 cores and 128 threads, but with lower frequencies).
@Reiterj3 To be fair, Cell was "godlike" only on floating-point operations. For general-purpose computing, Cell is based on the same architectured used on the G5 processors Apple used until 2006, which had the Pentium 4/D lineups as their biggest competitors. By the time the PS3 was released, Cell couldn't compete on that aspect with Intel Conroe and AMD Brisbane.
@doommmmmmm If you're refering to the video titled "PS3's cell rendering in real-time WITH-OUT the RSX", it's actually a PS3 console connected to a cluster of QS22 server blades. The cluster is doing doing the rendering, all the PS3's Cell is doing is joining the pieces coming from the different blades to make the final image (which is a rather simple task).
I posted this info on that video using my other account, "mathhenr". Look at the reply I got from the uploader, it's the first one.

@joaovictor1994 Just in case you want to know, RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) is a processor based on the concept that simpler (reduced) instructions are faster to process and therefore increase performance, while SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) is a set of processing units that perform the same calculation on multiple incoming data at once.
@doommmmmmm The PPE is a 2005 PowerPC based core which was developed to compete with the Pentium 4 processors. And the SPEs have no access to system memory, no cache, no branch predictors and a limited set of instructions (compared to a processor core). SPEs only perform well on floating-point operations.
By the way, Cell was ALWAYS manufactured by one company only, IBM. Like I said, Sony and Toshiba only commisioned the development project.

@doommmmmmm IBM didn't drop out the Cell lineup. They won't update it, but they still manufacture the existing models, since they are needed for IBM's QSxx server blades. Also, if you go to the most recent iSuppli report about the PS3 slim, you'll see the Cell chip used on the PS3 is still manufactured by and branded as IBM. You'll also see that it costs $37.73.

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue = 1080p mode is 1280x1080 (2xAA) in-game while the garage/pit/showrooms are 1920x1080 with no AA. 720p mode is 1280x720 (4xAA)

@henryhenriquez actually move was in development before wii was and no mainstream pcs fail to compete with supercomputer hardware. 360 is incapable of 3d, I've never seen 3d on pc, and besides w/ my PS3 i can have it on bigger screens. but let me bring up remote play PS3 can do remote play w/ pc/PSP/cell phone but pc can only do it with other pcs but it's not as practical as a much more portable device such as a PSP or a cell phone.

@henryhenriquez Actually, POWER7 processors have up to 8 cores with 4 threads each. If I'm not mistaken, they are the most power commercialized processors today, and their only competition on that level of the enterprise market is Oracle's SPARC processors (up to 16 cores and 128 threads, but with lower frequencies).

@Reiterj3 To be fair, Cell was "godlike" only on floating-point operations. For general-purpose computing, Cell is based on the same architectured used on the G5 processors Apple used until 2006, which had the Pentium 4/D lineups as their biggest competitors. By the time the PS3 was released, Cell couldn't compete on that aspect with Intel Conroe and AMD Brisbane.

@doommmmmmm If you're refering to the video titled "PS3's cell rendering in real-time WITH-OUT the RSX", it's actually a PS3 console connected to a cluster of QS22 server blades. The cluster is doing doing the rendering, all the PS3's Cell is doing is joining the pieces coming from the different blades to make the final image (which is a rather simple task).
I posted this info on that video using my other account, "mathhenr". Look at the reply I got from the uploader, it's the first one.

Also, 8 PS3s achieve a measly 1433.6 GFLOPS and cost $2392. One Radeon HD5870 achieves up to 2720 GFLOPS and costs $359. If 8 PS3s were as powerful as a $4 million supercomputer (which is absurd), a single Radeon graphics card would be as powerful as two of them.

PS3 = 1 PPE + 6 usable SPEs = 7 * 25.6 GFLOPS = 179.2 GFLOPS
RV770 = 0.75 GHz * 800 shaders * 2 floating-point operations per shader per cycle = 1200 GFLOPS
RV870 (Radeon HD5870) = 0.85 GHz * 1600 shaders * 2 floating-point operations per shader per cycle = 2720 GFLOPS
2720/179.2 = 15.18. In other words, PS3's Cell is 15.18 times slower than a RV870 chip considering their theoretical performances.

@doommmmmmm Fine. Read the IBM documentation about Cell, which is avalable for free on IBM's website, and you'll learn how to calculate its FLOPS performance. As for the ATI chips, you don't even need to, because ATI already specifies it for you. Go to the Radeon HD4870 and Radeon HD5870 (simply type those names on Google and you'll find them) and you'll see their FLOPS performances are 1200 and 2720 GFLOPS respectively.

@joaovictor1994 Just in case you want to know, RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) is a processor based on the concept that simpler (reduced) instructions are faster to process and therefore increase performance, while SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) is a set of processing units that perform the same calculation on multiple incoming data at once.

@doommmmmmm The PPE is a 2005 PowerPC based core which was developed to compete with the Pentium 4 processors. And the SPEs have no access to system memory, no cache, no branch predictors and a limited set of instructions (compared to a processor core). SPEs only perform well on floating-point operations.
By the way, Cell was ALWAYS manufactured by one company only, IBM. Like I said, Sony and Toshiba only commisioned the development project.

@doommmmmmm IBM didn't drop out the Cell lineup. They won't update it, but they still manufacture the existing models, since they are needed for IBM's QSxx server blades. Also, if you go to the most recent iSuppli report about the PS3 slim, you'll see the Cell chip used on the PS3 is still manufactured by and branded as IBM. You'll also see that it costs $37.73.
