@arnyjk I think Thorne was trying to eliminate the "Can You Read My Mind" segments in the piece due to the absence of Lois Lane in most of the picture.
why the hell WB never released an extended cut of III is beyond me. I still have SIII on vhs from the 80s when it appeared on ABC, and there's so much footage that was not even included in the 2006 boxset. The only highlight of the SIII dvd from 2006 was the behind the scenes documentary in the ''special features''. And the SIII dvd from 2001 boxset didn't have shit except the theaterical trailer which was a dud
Does anyone have the original "Street" opening of this movie? I saw it on the Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 Dumbest Superman Moments and just have to see it for myself.
@LogosForTheWin youtube SUPERMAN III THIEF SCENE TV CUT and there's a part from the ''street'' opening. Unfortunately that's all of the 'street' opening i can find besides ''SUPERMAN III DELETED SCENE'' in which superman saves some kid from a tree, a scene omitted from the theaterical cut. After u see the scene you'll understand why it was cut out.
@JLC31383 If that isn't the most obvious thing. Of course we all knew that. I was talking about how TDKR almost never happened, at least under Nolan.
@Mr1131988 "The Dark Knight" did not end in a way that could be left as a final conclusion- it is asking for another story to be told. Not doing a following sequel to that would be just like not making "Return of the Jedi" after "Empire Strikes Back".
@Mr1131988 I know there was speculation whether he would return to do it or not- Christian Bale said he would only do a third movie if it was directed by Christopher Nolan. Luckily, Nolan decided he did want to complete his series into an entire trilogy. That is my guess why he ended the second film with a cliffhanger looking like things needed to be resolved. However, he has announced this next one will definitely be his last. They are talking about rebooting it yet again after the next movie.
They should have done this space edit in the original. Though I still enjoy Sup3 and grew up on it, the circus nonsense beginning has no business being in a superman movie. Too slapstick.
Why they did'nt install this inspiring intro in Superman III instead of that bofoonish intro that should have belonged in a Jerry Bruckheimer produced comedy adventure flick like Con Air or Gone in 60 Seconds. I gues what they did was for a cheap laugh. It turned out to be the last Superman movie the Salkinds produced it before selling it to a grindhouse movie company like Cannon. That's showbiz for you.
@SteveSpicerPortsmuth you can thank the producers for that mistake. I liked Pryor, but it was a bad concept. Unfortunately, Pryor was an A-list actor at the time and the producers thought he would help sell the movie. Parts 1 and 2 grossed over 100 million, part 3 grossed only 60 million. Should i say anymore.
@SteveSpicerPortsmuth Yeah i guess i can agree with that since I have seen all 4 of these superman films staring the deceased actor christopher reeve. oh RIP. REST IN PEACE reeve i miss you everyday. you wear great in your days chris but now I now you are in a better place and I am sorry that you had to go so soon. I wish that I had meet him.
After 1 & 2 the format failed to excite :( When I heard Richard Pryor was in it, as a then 15 year old, I didn't even bother going to see it in the Theater.
The 86' extended TV version. They changed the credits because of Pan & Scan problems. A lot of people want to see the longer cut but neither Warner or Salkind are listening. Some fans released bootlegs but Warner Bros. threatened legal action! Crazy, they won't sell an official version and prevent you producing your own. Surely someone who worked for a TV station has this version? These studios are clueless. On the Superman III DVD, Warner Bros. even removed the sky effects which hid the wires.
@JayArgonaut when this movie went into syndication in the late 80's after ABC stopped showing it, WGN, TBS and other stations showed the extended cuts of III, IV, and Supergirl. Since then I have yet to see the extended cut of III on any station. AMC has aired it a few times over the past few months, but it's the theaterical cut. Luckily i have the extended cut of 1, 2, and III and supergirl from abc. There are a lot more deleted scenes from part 1 that were never released in the 2006 boxset
3 would have been better had they used this original opening and cut out all that bullshit at the beginning with the blind man, penguins, and the mime. There was too much comedy and too many gags in this movie. Thanks Lester.
@msmithstud lol you're right. Have you heard the DVD commentary? Salkind and Spengler spent a good hour of it defending the film from all of the criticisms made over the years. Guilty consciences...
@JayArgonaut they claim that 4 killed the franchise. It was a combination of III,IV, and SUPERGIRL. Again, had Donner directed III, he would have gotten rid of all those gags. Reeve said that Lester was 'always looking for the next gag.'' Some of that crap was originally written for 1,but Tom Manciewicz and Donner both got rid of them. For example, there was a stupid scene written in which, Sup flies down and grabs, who he believes is Luther but it's Telly Savalas. He then offers SUP a lolipop
@SteveSpicerPortsmuth actually, chris reeve said in his biography, STILL ME, that Superman mistakes Telly Savalas for Luther and swoops down, picks him up, and realizes it's Savalas, and he then Savalas offers Sup a lolipop and says, ''who loves you, baby?'' Whosever idea that was needs to be shot. If Lester was directing part 1, that scene would have stayed in it.
Where are the big swooshing credits flying into the screen ? Nothing against your video mate (I gave it a thumbs up) but these Star-Warsy screen crawls pale in comparison to the first.
I love the Superman main titles in space very, very much. That's the kind of intros that say get ready for a great Superman adventure. Love the small space sound before the music began in this one. I have the VHS one and I didn't like the main titles shown at the bottom while they showed scenes of the streets of Metropolis.

@scoobdogg187 Hey and thank you from many years back before I had this youtube account for posting this movie up and oh yeah I have a tape of this old tv broadcast version as well. I think that was just right for television and that regular credits scene did not make it look that much like a superman film much or at all but this one made it look a little professional and little more offical looking for not just tv but it would have been more appropriate to despite that fact that is not the best
@scoobdogg187 oh and lastly one more things to say is that even though this is not the best superman film I did hear that superman IV was the worst out of all these movies. I personally would say that even though I like them all I would say that superman and superman II were the best parts of the series but anyway I think you know what I mean by this too that regular opening credits version for superman III oh yeah THAT WAS THE WORST OPENING OF THE SUPERMAN FILM SERIOUS I had ever seen and not
@scoobdogg187 would I say this is much better, I would also say even they superman iv the quest for peace was the worst film to a lot people of out the series the opening credits to superman IV are actually still much better than the original superman III credits and yeah it does not have to be all that bad. But I love these movies too much.
Superman III is the SHITZ!!!! darker plot, a lot more funny, more romance(now between clark and lana), action packed, and lester did a pretty good job with the film itself. nothing i would wish come out of it, but those space credits seem promising enough to be on an extended version of Superman 3? hmmm. WONDERFUL MUSIC by ken thorne!!! and they deleted some footage, one scene being where they ACTUALLY show superman fly down and save those people from the tornado in a very intense scene!!!
The reason for the expanded titles and scenes was that when the Salkinds sold the films to the networks to be shown, they were able to charge more for the increased running times and the networks could sell more advertising space. ABC raked in a boat load when they aired the first Superman over two nights. Remember this was a time before video players were in every household and cable television was still in it's infancy.
You would have thought with computers being a major plot point in this movie that Brainiac would have been the villain. I can't blame Lester for this or the Newmans. Warners wanted Pryor and a less serious tone.
Even though Ken Thorne arranged this main title intro and used a lackluster orchestra, I like it except at 1:54; it takes an abrupt turn. The best part is the moment just before and when the 'S' shield comes on the screen.
I know this reply is a bit late, the reason it takes an abrupt turn at about 1:54-1:56 is cause the Television version theme is a cut down version of the Superman theme heard at the credits at the end of the film. The TV opening was created from the footage used on Kal-El's 12 year journey in the fortress when Jor-El talks about immortality etc in Superman The Movie. Apart from film plate image of the S used to show on the credits, I believe the text credits were done by computer at the time.
The 3rd film tried to take Superman into a new Direction.
If they had another Villan like Brainiac coming to Earth wanting to fight it may have been too predictable. I would have preferred that- hell anything than Pryor and the lame comedy in this turkey of a film.
The sequel that took everything good about the first two and punched it right in the nuts. This edited for television opening was better. I never got over them not using Superman's theme in the theatrical run.
@AlanScott69 Yeah I will tell you I was not to unhappy about that and I still really enjoyed the movie but yeah the television opening is certainly in my opinion oh yeah much better than that ridiculous and crappy slap stick opening in the theatrical run and I think that is how they should have made it before they even put on television when they first released it in theaters with that actual opening credits scene not in the city but in SPACE they way it should have been like the first 2 movies
@AlanScott69 I agree with you 100%! They should have used Superman's theme for a much better opening credits sequence in space. They should've used either the end march at the end of II or did an opening similar to II with a look back at part II!!!
@batmanvsalien Yeah I agree with that too I love this version much better than that crappy slap stick credits version that comes up in the city and that was the reason they did this specifically for TV broadcast versions of it and I think that is the way it was really supposed to and was meant to be and I am not going to change my mind about this but remember this is the best superman film but the tv version with the credits when they put it on broadcast looks a whole lot better & extra footage
@batmanvsalien Yeah I sure do to I just thought i would let you know that and I certainly think that this should have been the opening credits to the Superman III film instead of that of you know I will tell you that... that opening scene with the credits in the street opening was the WORST intro for a Superman film that I had ever scene and that think that was how they really should have made the film originally instead of these dumb opening and mean not just for when the made it specially made
for television broadcast but also what i am saying is released and made that way when they released it in theaters. Man i will tell you that was the most cheesiest opening credits scene for especially a great sci-fiction action film called superman and even though superman IV what a lot people say was the worst one they had ever seen at heard of I also will tell you that the Superman IV film opening credits which take place in a tight orbit above the earth is still a better opening than the
opening for superman III and even if they did make it with that better ending when they released it in theaters yeah i agree it still would not have been the best superman film for sequel number three but would have been a whole lot better and that is that. feel free to comment or reply to my comment back on what you would like to say and sorry for to much information.
I remember seeing this and although Richard Pryor was cool ... it's totally out of sync with where the first two movie had established in the series. It'd be like the next Batman Movie co-starring Jack Black or something.
Thts mad i did not know this was about and superman 3 was the first film i watched at the cinema. Question though why is John Williams not credited with the orignal theme?
This particular opening is featured on the extended TV version of the film. Though the DVD did include deleted scenes, it did not contain the actual TV version.
so did I. I had this version on VHS not only that but it had alot more footage than the DVD versions. Thats why i traded my Superman 3 DVD delux edition because it was not the same as the one of my childhood on VHS
Something else I forgot to mention, the background space footage is also taken from Superman The Movie which plays throughout the part in which Jor-El is talking and taking Kal-El on his 12 year journey before he becomes Superman.
I love this.....very creative and such an improvement over what they gave us in the theaters. What a screwup that was, with the full backing of the studio.
I love all the different versions of the theme of Superman. I like this version of the theme probably the best, the soundtrack piece for the opening theme of this credits was a edited shortened down version of the end credits music.
I really love the look of this , it actually would'nt be that expensive for Warners to just slap this at the begging and throw in a few lost scenes , and that woould really be a smash on dvd.
I think it had to change eventually, the original John Williams theme is probably one of the greatest themes ever, but you can't keep using the same exact theme....this theme is not that bad.
I thought it was kinda neat how the re-edit the opening, I liked how the S slides to background at angle and how it looked like the silver S from the black Krypton outfits.
I think that the titles have to be in space for a Superman film, its like not having a gun barrel logo for Bond,Richard Lester the directer aparently hated having titles in space, hense in Supes 2 we see clips from part 1 during the credits, and why part 3 has the original slap stick opening, if you notice with this theme there is no 'can you read my mind' que, this could be because Supes 3 doesnt focuss on the Superman-Lois love affair.
Remember, though, Lester thinks he 'directed' Superman II. He took Donner's work and changed it to suit him so he could get the directorial credit. Warners wanted to give Donner dual credit with Lester, but after what Donner saw, he didn't want his name on it.
TV showings of Superman III used to use these credits for the pan-&-scan version of the film. The credits in the "slapstick" version of the credits don't quite fit on the screen when adjusted to the pan-&-scan aspect ratio.
yup it was this and another it was a different intro where Metropolis goes crazy and at the bottom shows the openin credits...im actually shocked 2 see this intro lol..never seen it be4
Finally! I knew I wasn't going mad and that I'd seen these credits before. I used to have a VHS recording with this sequence, but taped over it - as you would.
yh me too i had the same thing but i forgot the fact tht the titles were supposed to be in space now i remember. i recorded superman iv ova mine lol got bord of supes iii
Meh...Good funny film if you are in the mood.

@scoobdogg187 Hey and thank you from many years back before I had this youtube account for posting this movie up and oh yeah I have a tape of this old tv broadcast version as well. I think that was just right for television and that regular credits scene did not make it look that much like a superman film much or at all but this one made it look a little professional and little more offical looking for not just tv but it would have been more appropriate to despite that fact that is not the best
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
superman film there is.
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
If you have seen these superman films do you actually agree with me on these replys and comments.
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
@scoobdogg187 oh and lastly one more things to say is that even though this is not the best superman film I did hear that superman IV was the worst out of all these movies. I personally would say that even though I like them all I would say that superman and superman II were the best parts of the series but anyway I think you know what I mean by this too that regular opening credits version for superman III oh yeah THAT WAS THE WORST OPENING OF THE SUPERMAN FILM SERIOUS I had ever seen and not
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
@scoobdogg187 would I say this is much better, I would also say even they superman iv the quest for peace was the worst film to a lot people of out the series the opening credits to superman IV are actually still much better than the original superman III credits and yeah it does not have to be all that bad. But I love these movies too much.
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
thank you for reading my replys and comments.

At 1:35 it should say "Original Songs Composed by John Williams".

They didn't credit John Williams.

@BacklashStudiosWay
Do you know where I can get this version?
punkasswalrusV5 2 years ago 2
@punkasswalrusV5 it was only on broadcast TV when it aired on ABC-TV in the 1980's.

This is great! They should've introduced Superman this way!!!
kumarmangat67 2 years ago 3
I like the space version better in Superman 3 made more sense.
Patrick200717 2 years ago 3
Superman III is the SHITZ!!!! darker plot, a lot more funny, more romance(now between clark and lana), action packed, and lester did a pretty good job with the film itself. nothing i would wish come out of it, but those space credits seem promising enough to be on an extended version of Superman 3? hmmm. WONDERFUL MUSIC by ken thorne!!! and they deleted some footage, one scene being where they ACTUALLY show superman fly down and save those people from the tornado in a very intense scene!!!
SpiderBoy992 2 years ago 5
@SpiderBoy992 The music for the Chemical Plant scene was stellar. Probably the best music put to film.
jsb779 2 years ago 3
I like these new titles but what was the reason for changing them for tv?
jgberndt 2 years ago 3
The reason for the expanded titles and scenes was that when the Salkinds sold the films to the networks to be shown, they were able to charge more for the increased running times and the networks could sell more advertising space. ABC raked in a boat load when they aired the first Superman over two nights. Remember this was a time before video players were in every household and cable television was still in it's infancy.

this intro is better then the original intro of the third one
Southman77 2 years ago 3
Make's me wish they would put the 80's television version on DVD , with these great titles. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
jayce79 2 years ago 2
i like the superman movies

I didn't even bother to see the last two films during their theatrical release.
007InMiami 2 years ago
You would have thought with computers being a major plot point in this movie that Brainiac would have been the villain. I can't blame Lester for this or the Newmans. Warners wanted Pryor and a less serious tone.
AlanScott69 2 years ago
I like the part at 19 seconds in. Thorne got a bit creative there. lol
founder287 2 years ago
OOOH! I love the bit at 1:11 - gets a bit strong in the music!
Rahman4Media 2 years ago 4
Even though Ken Thorne arranged this main title intro and used a lackluster orchestra, I like it except at 1:54; it takes an abrupt turn. The best part is the moment just before and when the 'S' shield comes on the screen.
AlanScott69 2 years ago 3
I know this reply is a bit late, the reason it takes an abrupt turn at about 1:54-1:56 is cause the Television version theme is a cut down version of the Superman theme heard at the credits at the end of the film. The TV opening was created from the footage used on Kal-El's 12 year journey in the fortress when Jor-El talks about immortality etc in Superman The Movie. Apart from film plate image of the S used to show on the credits, I believe the text credits were done by computer at the time.
APriceProduction 2 years ago 3
I like the space opening.
The 3rd film tried to take Superman into a new Direction.
If they had another Villan like Brainiac coming to Earth wanting to fight it may have been too predictable. I would have preferred that- hell anything than Pryor and the lame comedy in this turkey of a film.
pricean 2 years ago 4
The sequel that took everything good about the first two and punched it right in the nuts. This edited for television opening was better. I never got over them not using Superman's theme in the theatrical run.
AlanScott69 2 years ago 20
@AlanScott69 Yeah I will tell you I was not to unhappy about that and I still really enjoyed the movie but yeah the television opening is certainly in my opinion oh yeah much better than that ridiculous and crappy slap stick opening in the theatrical run and I think that is how they should have made it before they even put on television when they first released it in theaters with that actual opening credits scene not in the city but in SPACE they way it should have been like the first 2 movies
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
@AlanScott69 I agree with you 100%! They should have used Superman's theme for a much better opening credits sequence in space. They should've used either the end march at the end of II or did an opening similar to II with a look back at part II!!!
VetteJ1982 9 months ago
I likethis intro more than that shitty street opening.
batmanvsalien 2 years ago 18
@batmanvsalien Yeah I agree with that too I love this version much better than that crappy slap stick credits version that comes up in the city and that was the reason they did this specifically for TV broadcast versions of it and I think that is the way it was really supposed to and was meant to be and I am not going to change my mind about this but remember this is the best superman film but the tv version with the credits when they put it on broadcast looks a whole lot better & extra footage
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
@batmanvsalien Yeah I sure do to I just thought i would let you know that and I certainly think that this should have been the opening credits to the Superman III film instead of that of you know I will tell you that... that opening scene with the credits in the street opening was the WORST intro for a Superman film that I had ever scene and that think that was how they really should have made the film originally instead of these dumb opening and mean not just for when the made it specially made
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
for television broadcast but also what i am saying is released and made that way when they released it in theaters. Man i will tell you that was the most cheesiest opening credits scene for especially a great sci-fiction action film called superman and even though superman IV what a lot people say was the worst one they had ever seen at heard of I also will tell you that the Superman IV film opening credits which take place in a tight orbit above the earth is still a better opening than the
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
opening for superman III and even if they did make it with that better ending when they released it in theaters yeah i agree it still would not have been the best superman film for sequel number three but would have been a whole lot better and that is that. feel free to comment or reply to my comment back on what you would like to say and sorry for to much information.
catzorro11mainecoon 10 months ago
I remember seeing this and although Richard Pryor was cool ... it's totally out of sync with where the first two movie had established in the series. It'd be like the next Batman Movie co-starring Jack Black or something.
djvillain 2 years ago 4
Even though I've seen the film before, I always have a bad feeling when I see Richard Pryor's name follow Christopher Reeve.
shuboy05 2 years ago 3
Its interesting watching this. I take it the slapsticky street scene was cut entirely from this TV version?
welshfilmbuff 2 years ago 3
Re: "Its interesting watching this. I take it the slapsticky street scene was cut entirely from this TV version?"
Nope. It took place right after Richard Pryor's first appearance as normal. Excluding the opening credits.

Thts mad i did not know this was about and superman 3 was the first film i watched at the cinema. Question though why is John Williams not credited with the orignal theme?
sean140180 2 years ago 2
why is this opening not on the dvd versions?
mikeconnor08 2 years ago
This particular opening is featured on the extended TV version of the film. Though the DVD did include deleted scenes, it did not contain the actual TV version.
zbmc5 2 years ago 5
It sounds like the theme is stuck. Like they didn't know how yo start it. Dundunduddudduddadundundundaddda.......

so did I. I had this version on VHS not only that but it had alot more footage than the DVD versions. Thats why i traded my Superman 3 DVD delux edition because it was not the same as the one of my childhood on VHS
PakistaniShaheen 3 years ago
I have to say that ken Thorne really redeemed himself here...his rendition of the theme for Superman 2 wasn't nearly as well executed as this one...

That's only for the filmmakers to decide, you idiot! Also, Australia's a joke.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like the quality of this video, the old VHS type quality with the unremastered sound. It's just really cool.

i hope tv land will air the 1985 tv version of superman iii with alternate space title with deleted footage
leamac42 3 years ago 2
Something else I forgot to mention, the background space footage is also taken from Superman The Movie which plays throughout the part in which Jor-El is talking and taking Kal-El on his 12 year journey before he becomes Superman.
APriceProduction 3 years ago 3
I love this.....very creative and such an improvement over what they gave us in the theaters. What a screwup that was, with the full backing of the studio.
SHAAN155 3 years ago 2
i hope this version come out dvd with alternate beginning space titles in widescreen and extras.
tretizzle 3 years ago 3
it did actually but they used a alternate intro not the space intro
SimplyFablouzEnt 3 years ago
I love all the different versions of the theme of Superman. I like this version of the theme probably the best, the soundtrack piece for the opening theme of this credits was a edited shortened down version of the end credits music.

dude, John Williama made the original song man! thorne only changed it a bit.

I really love the look of this , it actually would'nt be that expensive for Warners to just slap this at the begging and throw in a few lost scenes , and that woould really be a smash on dvd.
jayce79 3 years ago 2
This is a much better title sequence than the one in the Theatrical Version
darthkurland 3 years ago 2
I would personally love to see Warner release the '85' version with these titles and extras on dvd .
jayce79 3 years ago 2
I agree, although the opening theme in the DVD isn't bad, the titles in space are one of the best parts of all Superman movies.
OOSev 3 years ago
I remember these titles too. From the mid eighties on ITV in Britain. They are the best!

So much better than Richard Lesters original opening titel in the f**king city of Metropolis.
JohnJrBale 3 years ago
Superman 3 + 4 are bad but watchble
227060 3 years ago
I think it had to change eventually, the original John Williams theme is probably one of the greatest themes ever, but you can't keep using the same exact theme....this theme is not that bad.
pluto545 3 years ago
You say that but look at Star Wars
227060 3 years ago
i meant the theme more so, not the opening titles, but it's not quite like star wars though similar but not the same
pluto545 3 years ago
I thought it was kinda neat how the re-edit the opening, I liked how the S slides to background at angle and how it looked like the silver S from the black Krypton outfits.
pluto545 3 years ago
I think that the titles have to be in space for a Superman film, its like not having a gun barrel logo for Bond,Richard Lester the directer aparently hated having titles in space, hense in Supes 2 we see clips from part 1 during the credits, and why part 3 has the original slap stick opening, if you notice with this theme there is no 'can you read my mind' que, this could be because Supes 3 doesnt focuss on the Superman-Lois love affair.
mintyspace 3 years ago
Remember, though, Lester thinks he 'directed' Superman II. He took Donner's work and changed it to suit him so he could get the directorial credit. Warners wanted to give Donner dual credit with Lester, but after what Donner saw, he didn't want his name on it.
AlanScott69 2 years ago 2
Why do they have two versions of these credits. Does anybody know
reptongeek 3 years ago
I'm not sure. I love Superman III, but hated the theatrical credits. I'm glad they made these credits
volcanofan 3 years ago 2
TV showings of Superman III used to use these credits for the pan-&-scan version of the film. The credits in the "slapstick" version of the credits don't quite fit on the screen when adjusted to the pan-&-scan aspect ratio.
SkeeBall5 3 years ago
yup it was this and another it was a different intro where Metropolis goes crazy and at the bottom shows the openin credits...im actually shocked 2 see this intro lol..never seen it be4

as said in batman hush volume 1 when he talks about the tuba
