  • Why can't i use WD-40? and what happens if I do use it? I can't find those grease anywhere

  • @koolmien

The problem with WD-40 is that it will evaporate, which will allow mechanical binding to occur again.

You can try to use clean engine oil as that will not evaporate as readily and should not cause a mess provided that you don't use too much. Just apply enough to dampen the tip of a cotton swab and then apply the oil through the swab to the slider posts and to the worm gear shaft of the kicker motor.

  • @Watcher3223 Ah thanks, I will use motor oil cause I wiped the slider posts clean then realized I didn't have any of those grease lol. Now whenever the PS2 reads it makes grinding noises, thanks again.

  • @koolmien

    You're welcome.

But, remember, use the oil sparingly. You don't need to use much.

  • my dvd game of my ps2 30001 cant read and the CD has a circular mark..may be the top of the laser touched my cd.can u help me pls..

  • @johndagdag2706

What caused the circular mark and has it occurred on any other discs?

  • How do you connect the ribbon cable back to the disc drive on the PS2 fat

  • Which ribbon?

  • @Watcher3223

The one that connected to the back of the lens

  • There should be a dark colored clip on the receptacle. On each side of this clip should be tabs. Gently pull on both tabs until it snaps open.

Insert the terminated end of the cable, conductor side facing down, fully into the receptacle as far as it will go and then push the two tabs on the clip in to lock the connection in place.

  • I used a similar (almost identical) technique to restore my 6 y/o PS2 that was struggling to play games, and it's working like a champ at the moment :) I wasn't familiar with Molytone and honestly don't know where to buy it around here, so I used White Li Grease instead. I am wondering how often you typically need to repeat this process to keep things working normally. Seems like it should hold up for a few years, but was wondering if you had any experience with this.

  • Molytone is a grease that's usually only available from electronics parts suppliers. White lithium grease is a good substitute.

As for how often, you should only need to do it again if the problems resurface, which shouldn't be for a while; the problem is usually accumulative.

As for experience, my fixed console hasn't choked yet, but it also hasn't been six years yet.

  • ahhh, the 30001 is SO much better to work on, screw the 50001!

Also, does anyone know if the 90000 slim is the new $99 slim being sold? I saw some pics of the Japanese one and I really like what they did with it (internal PS, no vents=less heat=less energy) and I want to make sure to pick one up before the PS2 goes out of production all together.

  • I don't know too much about the slim PS-2s except the pickups may be more prone to failure, but replacements are cheaper to come by.

    Sorry.

  • I actually prefer the design of the slims. I can't say for sure which pickup is most durable, but changing them is much easier and has a much higher success rate. I've fixed several of each model of PS2 and I find 50001 fats to be the worst all around.

  • Uhm... when i finally fixed my PS2 i accidently slightly bend up the arm, so i dissassembled the Laser component, and bent the arm back, and now, when i put in a disc, it just doesn't do anything... I think its the ribbon cable... but i just really don't know what to do, i cleaned the lens alot!

  • Does anything look torn underneath the pickup?

  • I should say if there was anything that appears torn on the pickup's underside.

  • Can you take pictures?

  • If my battery's are fully loaded ill make a video on this account ;)

  • Yhea, Ill make a video, if my battery's are loaded up. Ill make a video on this account ;)

  • The video is uploaded :)

  • where do you get the molytone grease or lithium grease

  • Molytone can be ordered from an electronic parts supplier, such as DigiKey at their website digikey *(dot)* com)).

White lithium grease can be found in the hardware section of department stores or at hardware stores.

  • Thanks a lot man, you saved my PS2. It really helped a lot since my PS2 hadn't worked in 3 months. After I watched your video, and followed your instructions, it works fine.

  • Very cool! Glad the video was of help.

  • Thanks man, you saved my PS2 with the reassembly of the disc tray.

  • The part where you put the disc assembly saved my PS2, thanks for the awesome tutorial. If you have any way to donate to your paypal and whatnot please message me with the info.

  • Thanks.

And I appreciate your offer for a donation, but you don't have to worry about that. I made the video because I wanted to help others.

    Enjoy!

  • It did help, I could not get that stupid disc tray to close correctly and then bam this video fixes it all.

  • wats your job man? are u a technician??

  • No, though the tech stuff is a bit of a hobby.
