This is a sermon/motivation talk teetering under the weight of it's clichés and self-help pablum, mixed in with self-congratulatory self-praise (I'm so humble, super-successful and yet I give it all away etc.). I can only imagine the crushing boredom of the intelligent audience forced to sit through being talked to like they were dim children.

I will take the valuable things from this video, which I will admit there are a lot of valuable things he spoke about, but I will not let go of my rationality to believe the things that Rick Warren believes.

I hope we all come to understand that this has nothing to do with any God at all. Quit using God as a reason to do something truly noble and beautiful. The most enlighted and beautiful world view to hold is understanding that all the good or bad that you do is your responsibility.
No more than you need to read a terrible, brutal, violent and immoral passage in the bible to do something bad.
What is passing for religious and spiritual wisdom is actually just (not so) common sense. Please realize that you have the potential for greatness, both good and bad. We unlike any other animal on earth have the potential to break free of the chains nature has placed on us.
I thought the talk was actually quite good but I want to point out one very important point. Everything he said, without exception, has not a thing to do with God. But he claims that this is all of Gods doing. This could be said of any religion not just Christianity. Realize that these ideas, whether you decide to help or hurt, all come from you. Of course you are shaped by your environment, genes etc. You do not need to read a passage in the bible or any other "Holy" book to be a good person.

I haven't completely just run away from Rick Warren in general but I have a couple of questions for him... how can Rick serve on the Advisory Board for the Council On Foreign relations knowing it's main purpose is to set up a 'New World Order' (One World whickypoo Government) and what makes him think that it's ok for a "Christian" to support such a thing? 2. Excellent interpretations of bible verses. Very impressed. I've been waiting a long time to hear intelligent interpretations of the bible, instead of the usual literal ones without any relation to the world around us. I am a Buddhist, mostly because the path is much easier and clearer in Buddhist scripts. Now I'm looking forward to Christians re-discovering meditation (which they were involved in a long time ago). That is the main tool for unbiased observation
it has become clear that many new "preachers" have moved from the gospel message of sin, forgiveness, and new life through Gods only son Christ Jesus to a new message about how our "life" will be better, our finances better, health better, if we get happy happy about god (little g). this helps convince a sleepy greedy sinful mass and keep from making them feel "convicted" about their sin. we are all filthy in our sin and only the blood of Jesus can save us; that is the most important thing.
He is doing what he thinks is right, I admire that. IF all of us did that this world would be a better place wouldn't it, but the problem is that most of us are too selfish to care about helping and giving to others. Each one of us know what is right and what is wrong so, what's stopping us from choosing to do right? Self. Giving ourselves to God completely, allowing Him to transform our lives will make the world a better place one person at a time.

@marushamomma Have you tried Robert M Price's excellent book, ' The reason driven life' which is his reply to Rick Warren. Robert Price has a great warmth & wit / good sense of humour. I love ' The reason driven life' , it takes a look at what is known of the wider historical context of the Bible texts. Price notes that the authors who wrote the Bible often have more than one opinion on each topic. Higher criticism of the Bible yields many treasures from the Bible that apologists miss.

It contains the truth. It is not merely stories though it contains them. It is sufficient for all the Christian needs for life and living in faith.

The question of meaning is confused. The question of purpose is only one version of it. And that is the one that leads to the sort of reasoning Warren is expounding. The question of meaning in the sense of what it means to be, or what is the fundamental how of being is very different and will not lead to that sort of reasoning. Once you get to see the various ways the meaning of being can be asked, I think you will also see that God would not be a sufficient answer to most the interesting ones.

That's up for debate, but some people are aparently "wired" to do things that go against some people beliefs, like gay and transgender people.

Christians don't assume people will go to hell. Don't hate this man. HE wants you to live your life to the best regardless of beliefs. Helping others and loving them is important. If you were an atheist or Christian I would still respect you and love you as a friend. All he is saying is that believing in God can make you happy, he isn't syaing if you don't believe in God you'll be unhappy, he just states that offering yourself to God will bring you happiness, it isn't the only way, but it can!

You're correct: the original "witnesses" were illiterate Aramaic-speaking peasants who passed on the stories down through many several generations and hundreds of people before someone educated in Greek actually wrote the stories down. The four accounts disagree in hundreds of points.
The earliest full copies of the Gospel we have are the Codexes Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, dated 350AD. There are various small fragments of gospels from older Papyri dating 200Ad to 300AD, but nothing earlier
We GUESS that the originals were written between 60 and 100AD but have no way of verifying the content of those long gone originals. Things could have been added, removed, edited. We just don't know
All we KNOW is what was written in the two Codexes 19 generations after Jesus was dead
I am all for people doing good things however religion can often have the results of wrong-doings considered righteous. Being good does not involve changing your neighbor, it involves co-existing and understanding your neighbor. Most importantly it involves accepting him. One religion is wrong, atheism may be considered right only in the fact that it is neutral, otherwise it just is a lack of of belief in a god or gods. We shouldn't care about creed or color, we should care about people.

Are people disliking this video based on its content, or on the other beliefs of the speaker? I ask because I can't believe that so many people think servant leadership and charity are such horrible ideas. @JSavic The sum purpose of your life is not determined by how you die. You may live an amazing life and have it all fall to ruin at the end. As he says, your life's worth and purpose is determined by what and how you serve. The horrible nature of your grandfather's death does not undo or get rid of any good he did during his life. I don't know him, so I don't know, but you would lively be happier if you cherished his life more instead of focusing on how he died.

Still, the talk was actually insightful. As soon as you get around the god crap he's actually an intelligent person that has good things to say about life. TED isn't about all agreeing with each other, it's about having an intellectual debate about the universe and humanity. This fits into that. The fact that I don't agree with him changes nothing.

I thought the talk was actually quite good but I want to point out one very important point. Everything he said, without exception, has not a thing to do with God. But he claims that this is all of Gods doing. This could be said of any religion not just Christianity. Realize that these ideas, whether you decide to help or hurt, all come from you. Of course you are shaped by your environment, genes etc. You do not need to read a passage in the bible or any other "Holy" book to be a good person.

Excellent interpretations of bible verses. Very impressed. I've been waiting a long time to hear intelligent interpretations of the bible, instead of the usual literal ones without any relation to the world around us. I am a Buddhist, mostly because the path is much easier and clearer in Buddhist scripts. Now I'm looking forward to Christians re-discovering meditation (which they were involved in a long time ago). I love ' The reason driven life' , it takes a look at what is known of the wider historical context of the Bible texts. Price notes that the authors who wrote the Bible often have more than one opinion on each topic. Higher criticism of the Bible yields many treasures from the Bible that apologists miss.

Like Judges11v29-38 Jephthah vowed to kill whatever first came out his house if the Lord gave victory in battle.He should have realised a good God wouldn't want that.. The question of meaning is confused. The question of purpose is only one version of it. And that is the one that leads to the sort of reasoning Warren is expounding. The question of meaning in the sense of what it means to be, or what is the fundamental how of being is very different and will not lead to that sort of reasoning. Once you get to see the various ways the meaning of being can be asked, I think you will also see that God would not be a sufficient answer to most the interesting ones.

Christians don't assume people will go to hell. Don't hate this man. HE wants you to live your life to the best regardless of beliefs. Helping others and loving them is important. If you were an atheist or Christian I would still respect you and love you as a friend. Why are so many comments negative? Because TED should not be having speakers who think that 90% of their audience are GOING TO HELL! And especially TEDdies, most of whom would like empirical evidence for such beliefs. Rick Warren's ideas will not advance science or our understanding of the universe around us. He's got freedom to promote his fantasy religion in other places, but lets' not TED resort to having speakers just because they struck it rich with a book.

@UseYerEFFINBrain Actually, it was four anonymous scribes, and they were writing 45 to 60 years after the alleged event. Basically your broad idea is correct, but please get the specifics correct. You're correct: the original "witnesses" were illiterate Aramaic-speaking peasants who passed on the stories down through many several generations and hundreds of people before someone educated in Greek actually wrote the stories down. The four accounts disagree in hundreds of points.

The earliest full copies of the Gospel we have are the Codexes Vaticanus and Sinaiticus, dated 350AD. There are various small fragments of gospels from older Papyri dating 200Ad to 300AD, but nothing earlier
We GUESS that the originals were written between 60 and 100AD but have no way of verifying the content of those long gone originals. Things could have been added, removed, edited. We just don't know
All we KNOW is what was written in the two Codexes 19 generations after Jesus was dead

I am all for people doing good things however religion can often have the results of wrong-doings considered righteous. Being good does not involve changing your neighbor, it involves co-existing and understanding your neighbor. Most importantly it involves accepting him. One religion is wrong, atheism may be considered right only in the fact that it is neutral, otherwise it just is a lack of of belief in a god or gods. We shouldn't care about creed or color, we should care about people.

It feels like I am in church being preached at, not a serious discussion of ideas. I just watched a video called "Rick Warren tells us how to get to heaven" and he says the greatest sin is pride. Hmmmm. Why don't we take a listen to 3:30. Sounds like someone will not be getting any milk and honey or walking on streets of gold!!! Nope, sounds like he just bought a ticket to down under! hahahaha

Are people disliking this video based on its content, or on the other beliefs of the speaker? I ask because I can't believe that so many people think servant leadership and charity are such horrible ideas. You know, based on the fact that secular humanist who advocate the same thing seem to get such high approval ratings on their videos. Why not judge the video, instead, on the content of its message?

My grandfather was taken to an isolated place by Croatian fascists in WWII, who then proceeded to have some fun before killing him. So, they got out their knives and started by cutting off his nose, then his ears, then gouging his eyes out & finally, cutting him open & tearing out his heart.
What was the purpose to his life ? To provide pleasure for sadists ? And where was God's place in all this ? And how did he help a widow bring up 3 young children ?

@JSavic The sum purpose of your life is not determined by how you die. You may live an amazing life and have it all fall to ruin at the end. As he says, your life's worth and purpose is determined by what and how you serve. The horrible nature of your grandfather's death does not undo or get rid of any good he did during his life. I don't know him, so I don't know, but you would lively be happier if you cherished his life more instead of focusing on how he died.

So what was the purpose of the lives of my grandfather's tormentors ? And does the existence of such evil provide ethical evidence for the non-existence of a benign God ? Many concentration camp inmates started their imprisonment with strong faith since childhood, yet some succumbed to despair & finished themselves

He uses too many buzz-words, but that might be more habit than anything else.
Still, the talk was actually insightful. As soon as you get around the god crap he's actually an intelligent person that has good things to say about life. TED isn't about all agreeing with each other, it's about having an intellectual debate about the universe and humanity. This fits into that. The fact that I don't agree with him changes nothing.

Seriously... the guy just says be yourself, and with the authority given to you try to do good to others. What is so damn offensive about that? I'm not even a religious man, but I found nothing offensive about a religious man trying to be a good person, and use his influence for good. Some people just hate religion beyond reason.
