Millions of Germans were in a position similar to Ratzinger, why spend so much time focusing on him? Because he is no longer merely Joseph Ratzinger, he is now Pope Benedict XVI. None of the other Germans who joined the Hitler Youth where part of the military in Nazi Germany, lived near a concentration camp, and watched Jews being rounded up for death camps has ever become pope.

If Ratzinger had even a modicum of decency, he had tried to find a way to get out of that service. He didn't, so he is not fit to lead one of the major religious institutions of the world.
Then again, seeing how immoral and corrupt the Catholic Church is, he might just be the perfect person for it. The Church and the Nazis were allies anyway.
Hitch strikes me as a verbal ninja, with a lexicon as vast as the universe in which he lives and the similar ability to speak in a way so as to be understood by the majority of society, even if they don't always like what he says. I will personally feel a great loss for both myself and society in general upon his passing. I am hoping he survives his cancer long enough for him to articulate the most important things that need to be said, 30 years ought to do it. Get well Hitch
