The nperfect cut off is one of the hardest things in singing. And if you do the perfect cut off, there is a higher risk of cracking the note before the cut off. So for Kraus it was a bit too difficult to do it. Anyway he was one of the best singers ever.
Kraus could do the high notes perfectly, but not as good as pavarotti who was the best. Pavarotti could cut off the high notes perfectly even in 2007. Kraus could sing them very well even in 1991 but not perfectly because his cut offs finished being good at the age of 50. He started to finish the high notes in breath so called "wild breath".
What the hell is with Kraus' cut offs from all of his high notes, like the one at the end of the C at this performance? It sounds like he's being strangled. You'd think a professional like him would be able to cut off a note by this stage in his career.
@MrNigribov Not really. Sutherland could cut off her high notes perfectly until the very end. Same with Callas (even if they wobbled towards the end) and Pavarotti. I just think it's odd how much praise he gets. Yes, he had a pretty good technique, but his timbre wasn't particularly attractive, and it's kind of egotistical to attempt high notes when they no longer sound pleasant. People harped on Sutherland like crazy for transposing, but she was wise enough to do so at the end of her career...
Well - apparently people harp like crazy either way, don't they? Maybe we should just stop with harping - about transposing, cutting off etc.. ? There are recordings of him with perfectly clean cut offs, made in the 90s.
As to the praise he gets - he probably earned it, considering he never had a marketing machine behind him.
@bpicaud1 Really? You can't understand her singing, for instance, " voyons, ecoutons! et jugeons"?? Male voices down an octave from female, are easier to hear words in...they are clearer in that lower frequency. And lighter voices are easier to hear the words in, as well, because there is less resonance to interfere with the consonants. Simple physics...look it up.
Disculpen por ser reiterativo pero que gran maestro que fue el señor Kraus, y aqui con la stupenda . Tiempos de grandes cantantes de los que ya no hay más.
If you like JOAN SUTHERLAND and ALFREDO KRAUS check THE 30 TENORS in my playlist SUPER TENOR ARIAS ( including CLAUDIO SOTELO performing ARIA DEL CIRUJANO as a world première for YOU TUBE ) and tell me which one you prefer.
For a 60 year old man Kraus' high C at the end was superb. It was neither screamed or yelled but simply sung with a full resonant well supported tone. And its interesting to watch him sing for the note. He holds his head and mouth in almost the same manner he did during the preceding music. But the note coming out just got a lot higher. Bravo also to Sutherland and to Bonynge's conducting.
Joan è un tesoro raro, sia come persona che come cantatrice. Inoltre, Alfredo ha cantato con grande consistenza in molti anni ed entrambi meritano il rispetto di tutti gli amanti di opera.
Bravi! Even in this advanced age, both of them are still impecible in their techniques. Also, Kraus is one of the only people I've ever heard who actually /sang/ in a French accent. But I can't lie, that jacket he's wearing looks silly.
Michiswing, why do you bother to comment when you are obviously unwilling to be fair or even remotely respectful of a veteran artist? Your comments say more about you than Dame Joan, they are worthless. I say the same thing to those that disparage Kraus at this age. Neither singer is all they once were, but deserve respect.
Estos dos pilares de la ópera del S XX demuestran la grandeza que atesoran independientemente de los años de carrera que los contemplan. Es un placer ver como dos artistas tan grandes hacen que lo casi imposible parezca tan fácil.
I think if the entire truth were known, both of these singers are in their middle to later 60's here . ..NOT that an opera singer ever fudges their ages. :-) BUT listen to the voices, the techniques, AMAZING ARTISTS sent straight from heaven.
Strangely, for those who say Sutherland never "inhabited" the roles she sang, here she's 61 and, against all of our expectations (after all, she's already a matron!), she acts with ease as a young, naughty and funny girl. Roles like Marie showed how naturally and joyfully Sutherland could interpret a role, singing with moving but simple expressivity. Although her detractors won't give in, the fact is: Sutherland was a complete singer, not only a great voice.
Dame Joan used to say that when Italian papers called her La Stupenda she did not know whether they were referring to her voice or her size! Most tenors are short and fat but Kraus is slim and elegant. But mere physical factors aside - this is a priviledge to hear. Wonderful artistry and performances without a shred of self awareness or intrusive "star quality". Now here we have two geart artists enjoying their gifts and the interaction with each other. Many, many thanks.
The Prince of Tenors and La Stupenda. They give a lesson in correct singing - and each had been before the public for 30 years at this point. What a pleasure to hear these gods of opera.
BRAVO! what a perfect singing, magnifique, magnifico, KRAUS AND SUTHERLAND , phrasing, highs, everything just ideal. Amazing and more to say, much more..
This is an amazing performance, and just to think both of them were more than 60 years old! Sutherland's, despite a beat in some middle notes and a heavier timbre, sounds mostly very youthful - and what a technique is that? Her coloraturas shine as beautifully as 10 years before this performance and her phrasing and Bel Canto style is just as impeccable. Kraus is also THE master of stylish singing and elegant phrasing. They made a great duo - at any age! ;-)
I love you, Joan Sutherland! Who else could sing such beautifully rounded, pitch-perfect notes, and execute such wonderful trills, in their 60's? This is a dynamite pairing. Netrebko and Villazon, take notes!
Two masters at work yes Joan laughed when she did "Fille"with Krauss at the MET when the combined age was more than 120 years! but both were Masters of Belcanto and even at their age the still fabulous.
What a gift!. An aristocratic operatic couple giving the best from themselves. Both were over 60, and sang so perfectly!. Also they seemed to have a lot of fun together. I know that they admired each other, and it pours out of this perfomance. Most appreciated, sutherland9.

First, by this stage of his career is is 60 - which does not make it any easier.
Second - it's not a machine. If only perfect singers were allowed to sing, he'd still be the last one standing.
And finally - what the hell is with your smart alec tone?
