  • Due colossi..............

  • Oh WOW! THAT was a surprise ending!! Bravo and Brava!!

  • Kraus and Sutherland...... NICE!!!!

  • What the hell is with Kraus' cut offs from all of his high notes, like the one at the end of the C at this performance? It sounds like he's being strangled. You'd think a professional like him would be able to cut off a note by this stage in his career.

  • @ChrisStockslager

First, by this stage of his career is is 60 - which does not make it any easier.

Second - it's not a machine. If only perfect singers were allowed to sing, he'd still be the last one standing.

And finally - what the hell is with your smart alec tone?

  • @MrNigribov Not really. Sutherland could cut off her high notes perfectly until the very end. Same with Callas (even if they wobbled towards the end) and Pavarotti. I just think it's odd how much praise he gets. Yes, he had a pretty good technique, but his timbre wasn't particularly attractive, and it's kind of egotistical to attempt high notes when they no longer sound pleasant. People harped on Sutherland like crazy for transposing, but she was wise enough to do so at the end of her career...

  • @MrNigribov ... so she wouldn't sound like she was in pain on the high notes.

  • @ChrisStockslager

Well - apparently people harp like crazy either way, don't they? Maybe we should just stop with harping - about transposing, cutting off etc.. ? There are recordings of him with perfectly clean cut offs, made in the 90s.

As to the praise he gets - he probably earned it, considering he never had a marketing machine behind him.

  • @MrNigribov I see your point. I agree. :)

  • grandissimo alfredo!!!!

  • @bpicaud1 Really? You can't understand her singing, for instance, " voyons, ecoutons! et jugeons"?? Male voices down an octave from female, are easier to hear words in...they are clearer in that lower frequency. And lighter voices are easier to hear the words in, as well, because there is less resonance to interfere with the consonants. Simple physics...look it up.

  • Now they are both dead . Unbelieveble...

  • I'm a fan of the two, but in this case, the matter is that HE sings in french and SHE sings ...in an unknown language.

  • immensi

  • Bravoooooooooooooooooooo

  • This guy and girl have beautiful voices!

  • joann has a lazy vibrato..i like the difference..

  • Kraus and Sutherland are like sound MACHINES, its just UNBELIEVABLE.

  • lol...Sutherland is used to the tenors singing her part, and her singing Tonio's line..hence no harmory when they're singing together.

  • Superb rendition. I'm a fan of Kraus singing High B flat and High C at the end.

  • yea..its suits the piece well...and, as always, gives the tenor a chance to shine over the soprano..

  • If you like JOAN SUTHERLAND and ALFREDO KRAUS check THE 30 TENORS in my playlist SUPER TENOR ARIAS ( including CLAUDIO SOTELO performing ARIA DEL CIRUJANO as a world première for YOU TUBE ) and tell me which one you prefer.

  • Kraus' French is just superb.

    Sutherland's French is horrible.

  • haha, but who cares when she's one of the best singers ever

  • Strange, most Aussie speak french impeccably. Koalas speak french as well.

  • jump on a different bandwagon...

  • this shows what tow singers, even late in their career, can do when they when they are at the top of their game. This is amazing.

  • Mais de rien, gomongio... :)

Je dois faire attention à quoi?.......

  • What's the name of this fantastic duet from La Fille du Regiment?

  • Duetto:

"Depuis l'istant où, dans mes bras" in the French version, and in the Italian one is: "Da quell'istante che sul mio seno"

    :)

  • Merci thofolina

    Fais attention! :-)

  • Just BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • For a 60 year old man Kraus' high C at the end was superb. It was neither screamed or yelled but simply sung with a full resonant well supported tone. And its interesting to watch him sing for the note. He holds his head and mouth in almost the same manner he did during the preceding music. But the note coming out just got a lot higher. Bravo also to Sutherland and to Bonynge's conducting.

  • It's not VERY flat but sightly under the note...

  • super great Dame Joan Sutherland... oh! how i love her voice:)

  • can anybody tell me what the last note Kraus sang was?

  • It's a High C however it's slightly flat, But i think he sings it extremely well anyway!

  • At 3:34, Kraus don't sing his part.

  • Kraus...wow...the one of only two tenors to match Joan at the top of the staff...may he rest in peace.

  • @KaminaOne You mean the two tenors Kraus, Pavarotti and Gedda? hehe...

  • WOW...Sutherland as usual, was wonderful, as was Kraus. But, Kraus was amazing!!

    BRAVI TUTTI!

  • Bravi! Even in this advanced age, both of them are still impecible in their techniques. Also, Kraus is one of the only people I've ever heard who actually /sang/ in a French accent. But I can't lie, that jacket he's wearing looks silly.

  • Welcome to the '80's. ;)

  • Wonderful!

    Bravo Alfredo,

    Tu me manques

  • do u guys think there'll be any possibility than joanie will make a cameo in la fille this year like montserrat did in vienna?

  • She is on her eighties....I don't know about that..

  • Michiswing, why do you bother to comment when you are obviously unwilling to be fair or even remotely respectful of a veteran artist? Your comments say more about you than Dame Joan, they are worthless. I say the same thing to those that disparage Kraus at this age. Neither singer is all they once were, but deserve respect.

  • Thank you, Hako2004. A measured response to a comment the likes of which always pains me.

  • u r forgotten one, 22 befor zero ;)

  • They are superb!

  • I think if the entire truth were known, both of these singers are in their middle to later 60's here . ..NOT that an opera singer ever fudges their ages. :-) BUT listen to the voices, the techniques, AMAZING ARTISTS sent straight from heaven.

  • Strangely, for those who say Sutherland never "inhabited" the roles she sang, here she's 61 and, against all of our expectations (after all, she's already a matron!), she acts with ease as a young, naughty and funny girl. Roles like Marie showed how naturally and joyfully Sutherland could interpret a role, singing with moving but simple expressivity. Although her detractors won't give in, the fact is: Sutherland was a complete singer, not only a great voice.

  • I attended this Richard Tucker Gala of 1987 at Carnegie Hall. Sutherland also sang in the trio from Faust. It was certainly an enjoyable evening.

  • Dame Joan used to say that when Italian papers called her La Stupenda she did not know whether they were referring to her voice or her size! Most tenors are short and fat but Kraus is slim and elegant. But mere physical factors aside - this is a priviledge to hear. Wonderful artistry and performances without a shred of self awareness or intrusive "star quality". Now here we have two geart artists enjoying their gifts and the interaction with each other. Many, many thanks.

  • Dame Joan is physically larger than most tenors. Pavarotti was an exception for sure.

  • Bravo! But I find it humorous that Dame Joan is significantly larger physically than Signor Alfredo. :-)

  • Seeee! Anyone who says she was losing her voice at this point in her career, should have a listen to this.

  • He is truly amazing!

  • The Prince of Tenors and La Stupenda. They give a lesson in correct singing - and each had been before the public for 30 years at this point. What a pleasure to hear these gods of opera.

  • Great duet! Great Kraus and Great Sutherland!!! Really, really thankful for this video.

  • Still verry youthfull, BOTH these singers!!!

Joan looks at Alfredo as being a verry sweet naughty girl....

  • !Que grandes los dos¡

  • This is such a TREAT!!!!! Thank you so much!

  • BRAVO! what a perfect singing, magnifique, magnifico, KRAUS AND SUTHERLAND , phrasing, highs, everything just ideal. Amazing and more to say, much more..

  • This is an amazing performance, and just to think both of them were more than 60 years old! Sutherland's, despite a beat in some middle notes and a heavier timbre, sounds mostly very youthful - and what a technique is that? Her coloraturas shine as beautifully as 10 years before this performance and her phrasing and Bel Canto style is just as impeccable. Kraus is also THE master of stylish singing and elegant phrasing. They made a great duo - at any age! ;-)

  • Thank you so much for posting this!

Dame Joan, I love you from all my heart!

  • I love you, Joan Sutherland! Who else could sing such beautifully rounded, pitch-perfect notes, and execute such wonderful trills, in their 60's? This is a dynamite pairing. Netrebko and Villazon, take notes!

  • What a marvellous performance. That is class.

  • Thank you so much for taking time to post this wonderful performance!

  • there's only one LA STUPENDA!

  • Two masters at work yes Joan laughed when she did "Fille"with Krauss at the MET when the combined age was more than 120 years! but both were Masters of Belcanto and even at their age the still fabulous.

  • What a gift!. An aristocratic operatic couple giving the best from themselves. Both were over 60, and sang so perfectly!. Also they seemed to have a lot of fun together. I know that they admired each other, and it pours out of this perfomance. Most appreciated, sutherland9.
