  • Beautiful song! The live version is much better than the studio version. It was one song in the series "The Sopranos". Nils Lofgren--never given enough credit.

  • beautiful!!

  • One thing about Nils. He leaves it all out there every time he performs. One of the all-time greats.

  • just amazing

  • first heard this song on sopranos,,,no shame in that,,,,,,only a shame i discovered him so late. simply gets you in your soul,

  • That guitar solo is incredible

  • I get shivers whenever I hear this song. The guitar solo is probably the best I've ever heard.

    Thanx for posting this.

  • I'm so glad this song was used on the Sopranos - otherwise I probably would never have heard it. I LOVE it.

  • I cannot even express what this song makes me feel. It is utterly beautiful and speaks volumes of my own experiences. I have listened to this song over and over for many years and it never loses its power. Bravo!

  • @MrGrevy sorry some of us really don't know or care about the sopranos connection, we re here for real art. he is one of the top guitarists in rock and just because you don't know his stuff doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't. go back and switch your t.v. on

  • @MrGrevy

Nils has been performing since the late 60s, he's one of the most respected guitarists in the world.

  • This song reminds me of Mark Knopfler's local hero wild theme

  • If the audio was top notch on this, and there were no screaming idiots, and the video was higher quality...it would be perfect.

  • this song is a work of art

  • awsome my real name is Nils

  • wow that is the best i have in a looooonnnnnggg time

  • series 3!

  • Holy moly pole! Phenomenal

  • Thanks to skyeboatman for posting this! I loved this live performance. Yeah,he missed a few notes, but this has an impossibly complicated solo, and I believe it uses harmonics,if I'm not mistaken. He still makes it "ring" and I think it's lovely!!

  • great. found it yesterday. i did not know it was nils lofgren when i heard it in episode 33...or was it 34?

david chase did some fantastic soundtrack work on that superb show.

  • I have now uploaded 'Black Books' from the Acoustic Live album onto Youtube. you can find it on my channel. enjoy.

  • woah woah, he's amazing, leave it out

  • stfu. this is Nils Lofgren, bitch.

  • God, I love this song. Though, it is so sad. Reminds me of my first real adult love, the one who first broke my heart. Aww, such a great song.

  • ah nilsy it was used in the third season! episode 33 "Second Opinion"

  • heard this on sopranos, great song

  • brilliant brilliant song, love it on the ipod whilst walking and daydreaming!

  • i know the feeling. almost like a flashback.

  • where's his band?

  • does he need a band?

  • lol, i dont remember writing that

  • As a disabled person nearing 60, I would not know what to do if I couldn't listen to 2 great songs with my coffee in the morning. This is one, and Bob Dylan's "Forever Young." When you get older simple things like this mean so much! Thank you for posting this wonderful song!!

  • ahhh 4:55- 5:06 is my favorite!

  • Beautiful song. Caught my attention at once when hearing it in Sopranos.

  • Same.

Really it was just coincidence, I never listen to the credits. What amazing guitar...

  • So Underrated as a musician. He is the only one that can make the guitar sound like that and o so sweet. Awesome job NILS!

  • oh my freakin lord. he's so gifted at the guitar.

  • what an artist..he plays until there's nothing left.and what mastry over the instrument!

  • 6:40 - 7:00

one of the best pieces of music ever

  • fantastic song never heared it before.listern to this then listern to the ballard of lucy jordan by marianne faithfull, dont know what it is but they go together really well,or its it just me??

  • As I sit in my seat right now, the thought in my head is "Jesus Christ, that was fecking amazing". Beautiful!

  • best solo ever, can't get enough, makes me wanna start learning how to play the guitar :X

  • how can one guy be so good at playing like that?!

  • HeksjeA-on Acoustic Live

  • also Damaged Goods

  • Sounds to me as if you've never seen and heard Nils live.

Perhaps if you did, you wouldn't make such ridiculous statements. FYI, Lofgren is the probably the humblest, most sincere and warmest musician I've ever had the pleasure of seeeing. On the improvisation front, I've seen a helluva lot of "guitar Gods" over the years Lofgren's guitar skills rank among "the best". Finally, whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think it is you who crave attention here.

So, awa an bile yer heid.

  • this song talks about a man who fall in love with a woman that wants to see other guys, a woman doesn't love him in the same way he loves her?? very sad... and very emotional song. sorry about my english, i'm spanish. thankss

  • @GinoTheSinner

    LOL improvise on what ??

This song's "original" version is on Damaged Goods, and is a "gospel" like song, with no solo. Or you just like the song you listen in THE SOPRANOS ?

It was a remaster from a live album.

Seems that more than not knowing the man, you don't know his works.

ps : Nils Lofgren 'trying to crave attention' is just a "ROTFL" comment.

The solo is not easy, he need a special posture it play it correctly.

  • @GinoTheSinner your only saying that coz 1...you can't play so you're jealous...2...coz your a loner and your jealous coz he gets attention and ...3...COZ U HAVE NO LIFE AND HE DOES SO GUESS WHAT YOU'RE JEALOUS!

  • On which album is it? I cant catch what he says...

I just love this song.. listened to it much when my parents divorced...:S

  • it is on acoustic live, all his best songs and in my view some of the best prestation of them-but then I do think that Nils is an icon!

  • Nils Lofgrin..Rock God!! This this song is great? Check out his early work with GRIN.

  • Awesome

  • Actually series 3. The episode (second Opinion), the bit where a mother sits outside the halls of residence, waiting to see her daughter (Meadow)- iconic! Tony and carmela - 'I want you to do something nice for me'. Tony, shaken down for 50g, the sigh, resolved to do anything to keep it all hanging together. It's what a father does, right! The closing scene, this song......The sopranos....in years to come it will be seen for what it was...simply the best piece of cinema TV ever!!

  • Amen

  • Alroight: I totally agree with you! That scene where Carmella is sitting in the dorm hallway, waiting for Meadow, looking so depressed, it was heartbreakingly iconic! I'll never forget that, or Falco's shattering performance. I think that's the best work she did on teh entire series, that episode... with a great song to compliment her. She won an emmy for it too, that episode.

  • oh my.. so beautiful! I've been looking for this song since I heard it in the Sopranos. Finally I found it! And it sure doesn't disappoint. It breaks my heart, though

  • +1, found it on Sopranos too :)

  • Hehe nice. So did I. It's a moving song. Too bad there is no beter version. The yelling in the background is a bit annoying. But he is amazing live, I have to admit that.

  • I meant to reply to the guy telling he heard it on the sopranos.

  • I heard it first on the Soprano's hits, a

very good album. There are many undiscovered

gems on the album. This is a great song!

  • I love the Voice and Music from Nils!

He is one of the greatest Guitar-Player, simply a great Song.

  • Love this song so much!

I meet Nils 2006 after he had played a fantastic acoustic gig in Germany/Bremen, he´s a nice guy.

  • Amazing...I found out about this from The Sopranos too....great song

  • Supberb.

Nils is underrated, and that makes he better.

  • GREAT!

  • Never heard of him until the sopranos, magnificent sound to an unbelieveable series

  • Same here. At the end when tony talks with his wife.

  • Oh for those that aren't familiar, he played all piano on the "After the Gold Rush" LP by Neil Young and much more.

  • woaw! i had no idea, that is amazing!

  • Lofgren is one of the greats. Thanks for the song, I love it!

  • fucking great , love his music

    and love sopranos

had never heard nils his music without sopranos ;>

  • I totally agree. The Sopranos is amazing. I saw Nils at Manchester, UK a few years ago. What a combination!

  • It's originally from the 'Damaged Goods' album, I think Nils' best. I don't think he's come close since, IMHO.

  • Just watched the second opinion episode and decided to look for it. anyone have a link to download it.

  • you can get it on limewire be sure you get the live version (thats the one used on sopranos) the studio version is a lot different and not beautiful.

  • heard this one at sopranos... fitted perfectly in

  • Just Great. Never thought that such a smooth kind of sound could touch me like that.

  • I dont even like this kind of music and I was just blown away by that.

    ABSOLUTELY FUCKIN BRILLIANT!

    Legend.

  • nils is superb if you like black books take a listen to some must dream on the acoustic live album, hes the no1 to me fantastic style and not overstated

  • I really, really love Nils, but when is he going to play with the band? I miss the sound, the feel, my favorite is the drummer,Tim, he is awesome.

  • Just heard this in the Sopranos. What a brilliant tune.

  • Which episode?

  • Season 3 in the episode "Second Opinion". It's on during the last scene of the episode.

  • That's where I heard it too - liked the song and looked it up just now.

  • Great performance of the greatest gitarist

  • got to meet nils in dublin after a gig in vicar street he's a gr8 guy and fantastic guitarist.

  • Nils Lofgren is the bomb W00T good song too.

My frend says the Fritellis are more popular than him LOL

  • they probably are. nobody knows good music nowadays. such a pity such crap is being listened too when there is such beauty out there.

  • Ah, ah ! Who are the Fritellis ??

I'm happy to know Nils Lofgren !

  • Nils is a genius. I was there at that show, and i'm sure you can hear my hi pitched screams somewhere! my favourite nils song, he is a master, thanks for filming this.

  • this guy's good...

  • Beautiful. Love those picked harmonics.

  • A great version of this song! :) Nils is king...

  • Great song buddy !!!

  • Lovely song. Thank you so much, Skyeboatman

  • Even I who am a 14 year old drummer can see how fantastic he plays the guitar! wow! Black books is one of my all time favortie songs!! Thanks for uplading...!

  • Thanks for posting this! I first heard this piece during the credits of the Sopranos eposide "Second Opinion" (2nd season). I finally tracked down the artist and it turned out to be Nils Lofgren. Bought the track on iTunes. Beautiful piece. After seeing this, I'm pretty sure that the studio version has more than one guitar, which is what I suspected.

  • Which album is your track from?

I have the version from the album "Favorites 1990-2005", and i can't seem to hear any other guitar.

  • And the Live Acoustic album version is performed by Nils alone too (the same as on the "Soprano" soundtrack). But he used Takamine EF-508c, not this one...

  • Same here.

  • Thanks for sharing :-) Nice one mate

  • Finally:=) The original by Lofgren... Great song! Thanks for uploading...!
