Snape gave his life to protect the last remaints of the person he loved. He had such potential, such drive. So Slytherin. I know that he could have gotten so far in life without all of his past mistakes weighting him down. Snape really speaks to the tragic sense of loss that all humans feel. He is flawed in his love, as many others are, and so he connects with us more than any other character. He is just someone that I admire. Both for his strength in the war and in the battlefield of love.

Ahh, the magic of Harry Potter, no one character is wholly good or bad.
I agree with you that Snape isn't a saint. But even if James wasn't a "horrible person", he still has been very bad to Snape during the hogward's years, along with Sirius Remus and so on. He basically acted with him just like Drago acted with Neville or Harry....As an adult, James was a brave good and very couragous man, but as a teen, i'm sorry, I think he sucked.And Harry, to me, is a much better person than his father. He would never do what his father did to Snape, even as a teen.

Call me biased, but I really can't see that James would have done it.
