Hyenas can be pets but they are smarter than dogs. They can climb and figure out how to open doors, refrigerators, cans, etc. and if they decide to chew on your furniture it won't hold up.

One I was a little kid I had a Jaguar and a Tigrillo (like a little jaguar but with three stripes on its back, huge eyes and a pink nose) :] They died when I was two years old, when they were around 15 years old, my grandfather and my parents rescued them when they were really little and almost dying.
It's cute but the big ones are scary. I don't know how good of a pet it would make, seems like it would be very dangerous and unpredictable. I'll stick to dogs. lol

You do realize that they are inherently hostile and practice fraternicide(try to kill their siblings) the minute they are born right?

@sarachopek Ancient Egyptians used hyenas as flock guardians and used servals as rat catchers. I wouldn't find it hard to believe that hyenas would make god pets. Egyptians only lost them because different cultures took Egypt over in time.

The spotted hyena is born well developed and starts fighting for dominance and the right to food pretty much as soon as they are born, the striped hyenas, however are born deaf and blind and helpless.
that's cool. i grew up with exotic pets & many guard dogs such as rottweilers, neopolitan mastiffs etc & researching heyenas as a pet, but i don't know if they just eat strictly meat & if they can handle cold temperatures.
hyenas can eat fruits and veg, and they love wheat and oatmeal, but not too much, they enjoy bones, and my country is like 130 degrees, so its hot enough.
I was thinking about getting a spotted hyena... do you have any tips on taming them besides bottle feeding and lots of love and attention. Do you have to establish yourself as the PACK leader?
yup, train him like a dog, but twice the effort, and always when he is playiing bite his ears realy hard with your hands to let him know your the boss

I reckon you can train them pretty much the same way as dogs, they are very smart so make sure you give them plenty of mental stimulation. Definately establish yourself as pack leader, if you can get a male do so as they are naturally submissive so will fit more easily into an omega role than females. Good luck!

Well of course I have. In overall newtons the shark or aligator has a more powerful bite but proportional to size, the hyena does. :-)
