The film tries to explain what it means to be a civilised man. Massie, the father, found his sheep diseased and had to kill everyone of them. There were so many that he enlisted his son to help. His son was shocked, desensitised and then dehumanised by the whole experience. This in turn led him to kill his own children. Cooper loses control of his civilised behaviour. He defends his family and home by killing Massie. The suspense in the film is built up by Cooper finding clues to the past
