actually, Romans were outmanned but used advanced weopons and tactics. For instance, a small Roman sword was lighter and easier to swing around. Plus, the Romans were unified, the Gauls, who consisted of celtic and various other clans and tribes never eally united. Apart from that, Caesar pwned the Gauls at Alesia, the Romans were outnumbered and even today, modern experts debate as to how Caesar won the battle of Alesia.

@sol200997 Experts don't so much debate at how Caesar won, but how the Gauls managed to lose. The advanced tactics and weaponry aside, the Gauls had changed their battle plan early on and send their Calvary out to gather reinforcements, instead of continually harassing the Romans and preventing them from gathering food, and more importantly, allowing them to complete the wall which completely trapped the Gauls inside Alesia.

@sol200997 Actually the celts were united under vercingetorix after Julius invaded briton for the second time. Vercingetorix didnt have the entire celtic/gaulish empire under his command but he had around 43 tribes this included nearly all of Julius's Celtic allies. So ya the celts were pretty much united at one point. Or at least as united as rome was at the time when you consider that Rome was on the brink of civil war... again.

Actually, I would say Greeks and Romans are even. They have similiar tactics, powerful infantry (Pikemen-both, Hoplites-Greeks, etc) and have similiar culture.

Let's not forget that the romans were defeated many times. But it's true that most of the time they won, especially after reforms (resulting in legionaires).

It's not true that they didn't expand before after the reforms, though.

Barbarians would never beat the Romans in real life, they had no strategic advantages over the Romans. the Romans were trained and well supplied while the barbarians had to resort to raids and anger. But the barbarians had a good reason to fight and i honor them for standing against the odds
