  • Why oh WHY does the rumor persist even today that Ethel Waters mother was raped by a "WHITE MAN"??! Has ANYONE even read her autobiography? He was a teenage light skinned African American. The guy's mother was very very very light. But his father was Black, so he was bi-racial if not all Afr American, just light. The families knew each other. Sadly, at the time, there wasn't any prosecution of rape especially for African Americans in the ghetto. This clip is amazing by the way! Love Ethel!

  • @friendsfamilyaccount Oprah did

  • Great! the rhythm doesn't have the dreadful sound that spoils so much of the Bessie material.

  • Nice singing, loud and clear!

  • Can someone please tell me why there are two names to this song? There is Everybody Loves My Baby and Ive Found a New Baby. Is there a difference?

  • @Abriggs500

    2 different songs!

  • @4l4ddin77 But don't you think the melody from both songs sound similar?

  • @Abriggs500

a little maybe, similar structure. which version of everybody loves my baby you talking about?

  • This is great!

  • I want this for the next Fallout game.

  • GREAT POST!!!!!!

  • Lovely intonation. You can always what Ethel waters is singing.

  • What a wonderful classic!

  • She's absolutely marvelous. However, the part about being raped by a white man isn't exactly true. The boy's (rapist's) mother was very very light skinned; but Ethel says in her bio "I never heard anyone say she was white" and his father was Black. They lived in the same ghetto area that Ethel's mother did. She did refer to her in the bio as "My white grandmother" but she was never sure if she was a light skinned African American or a Caucasian. Regardless, it was a horrific crime.

  • consider yourself off the hook for now ;-)

  • JOE SMITH on CORNET and Fletcher Henderson at the piano NYC 22 January 1926 not 1925 !!!!!!!

  • This video is being featured in the JAZZ CRAZE blog at myspace/TheJazzzKing :-)

  • Great version of one of the coolest songs of the time! (or should I say 'hottest'?)

  • Now THAT'S what I'm talking about!!!

  • very good

  • all you right to lifers and anti-abortionists..how do you send you kids off to war?

  • This has no place being on here. But if you wanna get into it, imagine all the Ethel Waters and Beethovens that have been aborted because of how horrible their parents situation is and acceptable abortion has become. The world is a better place because of such people. Quit preaching for killing unborn children and start teaching safe and responsible sex and fight to make contraceptives more easily accessible. Choose responsibility, not the easy way out.

  • @hah13

  • First singer with real Jazz intonation. Not a ragtime shouter; not operatic; JAZZ.

  • @JCJasion who were some of the "shouters?"

  • @modelo81292 - Ragtime Shouters? Hmmm, let me see - - - Sophie Tucker, May Irwin, Gertrude Saunders and on the really HOKEY side of things, Mae West.

  • @JCJasion she got that from Louis Armstrong. She is articulating the way Armstrong did.

  • hey my name is ethel!!!

    ahah cool.

    E.

  • Wow! Nice too see that she stood strong through the adversities. I applaud thee, and appreciate her gift, and the talents she shared with us unselfishly.PeaceSeeker-egress

  • nice clear diction, way earlier than Ella.

Two of my favorites, Alberta Hunter also.

    Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday.

  • I'm doing a project on Ethel waters 'case Ilike her sound.

  • Luv this!

  • Thanks!

  • Piano, James P. Johnson. Trumpet is Richard M.(Jazz Wizards)Jones.

Trumpet sound is very full and warm - Jone's Style, and not brittle sounding which would be Armstrong.

  • It's easier to find a ringtone from this song than any information about.

  • Who are the cornet and piano player? Tommy Ladnier and Fletcher Henderson?

  • James P. Johnson Piano

Richard M. Jones ( Jazz Wizards was his Bad on Victor) on Trumpet, not Cornet. Too warm and full sounding to be a Cornet. Great Song too and Waters is as usual, is great!!

  • Interesting. I only know Richard M Jones as a piano player.
