  • notice how they smile more in the after pics

  • all that this video shows me is that these guys were never exposed to a true, meaningful judaism. i hope their ancestors who were murdered for their beliefs for thousands of years forgive them for breaking the chain

  • I'm crying.....

  • this is beyond fantastic. Welcome home, y'all.

  • also, when is coming the next edition ? (would appriciate answers)

  • Ahh religion, a true prison for the mind. I'm glad that all you guys are free from the orthodox BS. May your lives only proceed to get better.

    Great choice of music too!

  • Who is the one with the tichel?

  • In the end of days people will fight with their own families.... That is a prophecy and what is so secretive about what happens between before and after. Experiences of painful separation, struggling to become used to a world where none of what you have lived for matters at all. Try to find a job with a skillset of learning talmud all day or meet people after only "talking to g-d".

May everyone lose their belief in g-d. May he show himself to the point where it is not belief anymore.

how much more "besser" can it get. You see, when we live with "freedom" we may pay heavy prices. I'm not against freedom. I'm for responsibility, frum or frei. It can be an ugly world out there. It can also be beautiful.

  • Important numbers for all those for whom it got "besser" (as posted on one of the help sites for such folks): New York Suicide & Crisis Hotline (800) SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) Alcohol & Drug Abuse Hotline (888) 729-6686 National Sexual Assault Hotline (800) 656- HOPE (4673) Child Help USA: National Child Abuse Hotline (800) 422-4453 Planned Parenthood Reproductive Health (800) 230-PLAN (230-7526) American Social Health Association: Sexually Transmitted Disease Hotline (800) 227-8922
  • Why are you particularly celebrating only people that are leaving ultra orthodoxy? Surely there must also be many non religious people that had struggles and found success in achieving their individuals goals and aspirations by choosing to be more religious and EVEN becoming ultra orthodox. Did the video not have enough time to include those people? Ironically, contrary to what this video would have us believe it seems like someone else might also benefit from being a bit more open minded.

  • "לפני".......בעולם הזה - הנאות...שטויות............ובוא נראה "אחרי"........בעולם הבא.....חחחחחחחחחח

  • Makes me feel so good to see others like me out there...

  • Wow...great video, great music. These people are the ones with strength of conviction not to let others lead them for their lives... I wish them luck, and hope they still have a big place for G-d in their lives, albeit not with hasidic.. clothing... I personally don't believe G-d dresses in black and white or cares whether you do...

  • Awesome video. It takes a lot of courage to do what these people have done. I commend them and have nothing but well wishes for all those who have had to go through the heart wrenching struggle of deciding to live their own lives despite how others (including loved ones) expect them to live their lives.

Please continue the "It Gets Besser" project. All the best.

  • And I am waiting for the after the after pictures....

usually when the mid age crisis starts hitting in Wish you all good luck

  • guys put levi arons before and after pics too. lets see how pepole that drop thier religion have come to

  • @bigschlongj LMAO! Wow, who did not see that coming?! You're so pathetic! Not being religious does not equal murder. I can't believe I am even explaining that... You need a 'refuah'!! Just like: Aron Levi!! lol

  • It's just depressing. Can you make one from friech to frum? ^^

  • @HilelX

  • this video is just depressing, and im not even sicking up for the "frum" lifestyle, its just plain depressing

  • If it ran backwards it'd be way more uplifting...song choice is disturbingly telling...and in most cases of outreach/inreach dead wrong...thanks to places like HOMESWEEETHOME, the LAST thing these people ever are is unforgiven!

  • etc. He dubs them "unforgiven" because they themselves have not received God's forgiveness, mercy and grace.

  • Couldn't have chosen a better song myself. This song speaks against religiousness... not against God or religion, but religiousness: self-righteousness, pridefulness, judgements and rules that produce condemnation, guilt, shame... all of which oppose Unconditional Love, Grace, Mercy, Forgiveness. The lyrics describe the torment and oppression that comes with the lies and accusations of religiousness i.e. "you're not good enough", "God is angry with you", "you're a loser and you suck"

  • Bless all the people in this video. I pray you are still in Torah. Baruch HaShem!

  • just a thought. happiness doesn't come from being frum or not, every human being can choose to be happy or not to be. yes it is a decision and hard work it's not something that just happens. so for the frum and not frum that generalize that there can be happiness where the others are, well there could be. iv'e seen really satisfied and happy frum people and iv'e seen non frum people being happy too. it has nothing to do with religion etc. so pls on both sides don't generalize.

  • Well this is part of yidiskit u should start to take care

  • You are right, and i was also heading in the same direction.

  • I was always bothered why mommy is having so many kids, if she cant afford them.

    raised in a charedi family

  • I am sure its much besser for those individuals now!

  • No, I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree, on to the next. I understand where you are coming from, but your comments just lead me to believe that you've been exposed merely to a limited variety of frum Jews. The reality is that there are many types out there. There is a whole world of depth, intelligence, and not to mention spirituality which, I'm afraid, you are missing. But it's not pity I feel for you, it's hope.

  • (cont'd from prev...)

Instead, frum people raise their heads out of the sand for one brief moment of shrill and obnoxious shouting: "You people were abused. Therefore you are losers!" And then the heads go right back into the sand until the next time something pops up on the Internet for another round self-righteous indignation.

You gotta wonder who the real "losers" are.

  • (cont'd from prev...)

If indeed, as frum people claim, these people have suffered from troubled pasts, that their rejections of traditional Judaism stems from atypical and abusive environments, then the frum world needs to do some soul searching, to understad why this phenomenon is both common and increasing. If so many of the ex-frum are coming together (and they are -- Footsteps alone has several hundred members, and there are many more), then there's obviously a problem.

    (cont'd...)

  • It's amazing how the responses here are more telling than the video itself.

I agree that there are problems with this video. In particular, the inadequacy of "before and after" photos to present the complexities of such major life transitions -- the motivations, the struggles, and the end result. But as flawed as it is, it succeeded in one major way: it brought out the intolerance, the narrow-mindedness, the sheer nastiness of those who call themselves "frum."

    (cont'd...)

  • @shdeen btw, u r generalizing which is usually not a good sign

  • If this video offends you, there is a simple solution: Don't watch it.

It is meant for those who don't believe it'll get better, for those who are in that dark place where they have left or are leaving, but are not sure that there is sunshine at the end of this pitch-black darkness. This video says: there is sunlight. Others have made it through and you will too. Don't give up in the middle of the tunnel, don't despair.

If you are frum and happily so, this video isn't for you.

  • I am amused by all the brainwashing here...I am Motie Weiss second to last slide. I am happily married, I have a good job, I own my own home, multiple exotic cars and I am very fulfilled in my life. By the way, I did not have to rob the government to get to this place in my life. It amazes me that you think 99.7% of the people are screwed up. I couldn't be more happier and content in my life than I am now.

  • Wierdos & Losers BEFORE & AFTER!

  • To pursue their own individual goals and aspirations.?

Will someone be knd enough to follow up on these individuals & see what they've accomplished so far ?

Do they all drive Tuv Taam trucks or did they manage to reach just a bit higher (pun narcotics) ?

The majority of these fellows are going nowhere on the fast lane.

  • there is no better upbringing than a chasidic child from a healthy family, & if your family sucked, you can lead your family the right way, but don't blame it on others, or you are just as bad as those few chasidic idiots that caused you, pain,

you cant change the world, but yourself, & that doesn't mean your religious behavior, I love you all and so does hashem,

  • @jamieitzy

    well said good points

  • @jamieitzy

    Ye right..

is that why chassidim have one the highest rates of poverty and incest??

  • I now have a beautiful family & a successful business & don't regret my move, believe me I could show you a video of much more people who are NOW leading chasidic/religious lives & are much happier & have way more freedom than any of the people in this video, god bless you all,

  • while it may be difficult going through what you went through, either a abusive father- teacher, a loss of a loved one, or just life wasn't easy, remember a non jewish life, without a commitment to morals, & accepting & dealing with your challenges, wont give you freedom, so go ahead do as you wish but being NOT will NOT make you happy, I personally was on my way to NOT, but thank god who showed me the way & sent me great people to help me to the right way,

  • there is a good reason that, not more than 3% of chasidim that become NOT, are successful, its because their emotion level is too high, & they don't think logically, its a pity, I do wish you all success & freedom, but you wont get it by hating yourself & the culture in which you were raised, you will find many great successful, happy, kind people in the chasidic community,

  • it won't go away! it doesn't matter if you dress like a slutty or put on just dress & behave different than you were raised, the only freedom a person can have is control over life's challenges, control over your emotions, Etc,

  • well oh well, It hurts to see these individuals, that were unfortunately not coping with the challenges of their life, so they figured that transitioning to a different life will make the challenges go away, unfortunately life is full of challenges, & if you don't learn how to deal with it,

  • how can we raise our children with zero secular education...the charedi education is a scam and fraud..

  • is yiddishkeit about suffering....its about choice...its about honesty...critical thinking...

    the charedi education system sucks...

  • And here is the sad truth. Those I know from these pictures have turned to drugs and pain killers just to push through another day. Others, are long gone....ending their miserable lives with an unfortunate overdose. And that is the sad truth.

All of them who I have spoken to, tell me that they are not happy.

The comments some of you leave here, is just evident to your internal pain.

I wish them all the best, but transition is unfortunately very painful.

  • Great video. May all my co-coreligionists who so desperatly need their own freedowm find the strengh to brake away and live on their own. No, it is not easy. Freedom comes at a price. However the fruits of your labor will pay off and you shall find your true strength and forever be strong. The community creates dependent people, bec religion can't survive with any sort of individuality of independence.

  • Comment removed

  • I left and am happier now.

  • @riegersteve Good for you. I left recently too although I wasnt raised hasidic like the people in this video were. but i did have to put up with plenty of religious bullshit in the community I grew up in. I am much happier now. best of luck

  • Call it an 'emotional' song, or 'Hartzig' (if you speak Yiddish).

After all this transition does not come easy. There is a ton of pain on this path.. Ever heard the songs they sing during a wedding??

  • OK, I get it I get it...but - why such a depressing song? Didn't it get BESSER - er - BETTER? And there seemed to be an odd rowing emphasis. all that aside, Chazzakh u Barukh!

  • These people (and I) deserve a heck a lot of credit! Coming from a Totalitarian religion and community, it is almost impossible to think on your own.

When you ask questions, they say you're not allowed. When you come across a questionable 'pasuk' or segment in the Torah or Talmud, they tell you to skip it.

Then comes the guilt ('family name', 'sibling's shidduchim'..), then threats (kicking out of house, community, disowning..)

If only regular Americans knew what's going on in their back yard

  • @naftulim the fact is, that the challenges in the "American life" are much worse, look at all the suicide's that are happening, the bullying, etc, so don't fool yourself, the world around you is a bumpy road to navigate, whichever way you choose to live it, you cant make the world perfect, but perfect yourself, & forget about the guilt, its all good, sorry but its just how it is!

  • @jamieitzy That's right. The world is a tough place. Now imagine growing up in a community that 'protects' you from all that, but then you suddenly join that world. It's 10x harder, and that's what 'It Gets Besser' is saying...

Eventually, we do assimilate and live a normal life.

  • @naftulim you realy believe that that community will protect you? I guarentee you that when thinks will not go your way, youl blame that community too, its a way of evading blame & responsibility, but whatever you do i wish you all success, & am glad to hear that some of you do lead normal lives, just remember the non jewish life is much harder, or just as hard,

  • @jamieitzy You did not understand me. It's the other way around. We grew up in a community that protected us from the outside world, and unlike those who choose to stay in their comfort zone (even when they don't believe), we chose to leave and face challenges. And that's very hard for people who always had a community supporting them.

  • @naftulim it only gets harder, brace yourself's, but from my heart i wish you all hatzlacha, and a clear mind, support each other as you saw in the frum community, as there is no support like it.

  • @jamieitzy Dude I have to admire your tacts. Logging multipe comments so it looks like this video is getting multiple negetive hits. An admirable and predictable move from a nice frum jewish boykie.

  • @Elthorian123 sorry dude, first my posts were logged in seperatly only because thre is a limit of 500 characters, 2nd my comments are POSITIVE, not negative, I feel for you guys, its tuff but so is life, overcome it, & it will be easier, if you'd just do your thing because its what you choose, great, but if you are all haters then you are not better of the scum that you are running away from, in every society, there are good & bad, its up to you to choose the good, ignore the bad

  • Once a Jew, always a Jew, they will all live to regret it. Hitler killed all Jews no matter how they looked or what they believed! So why not rather embrace and enjoy Judaism proudly, there must be a good reason why, although we have been persecuted all these years, we are still here mighty and strong! My heart goes out to you, and I wish you all the best, and I hope you come back and enjoy the real life asap!

  • @samb3571 lol! Stay frum and have a social Darwinist outlook, because of Hitler that killed the Jews - because he was a social Darwinist. Ironic.

  • @Alphasam8108 I did not suggest that better Jews survived. My claim was that is miraculous that any Jew survived

  • You call this "besser"?! how sad... I'm pretty sure none of these individuals feel "besser"...! On the contrary, they are so broken that they are trying desperately to run away from themselves, by completely changing they're behaviour appearance and lifestyle, as much as possible, but it doesn't help...!

  • It's always comforting to know there are others out there. We should have a support group.

  • Comment removed

  • omg -- you call this BETTER??? this is super super super sad. Every time I saw the before images I cried for the yiddishe chain those people cut off. Not better at all. way worse.

  • People make choices, and they are free to do so. It is a mistake to think that dress is what defines a person - just as it is a mistake to think that real meaning and satisfaction comes through vacations and leisure.

  • @iwatasc no, it comes from being oppressed and abused, not to mention lied to ur entire life, ur right

  • there is something kind of sad about this video. everyone should be able to be who they want to be, but im sure that there is a lot more than just their dress that has made these individuals "besser" . the next video they make should tell there story , not just show their photos

  • @sara35ish with this sort of background sometimes dress is what it is all about

  • Judaism is a fucking joke, and this is coming from somebody living in Bnei Brak. People still believe in this bullshit in 2011, its embarrassing.

  • Yikes, that music's annoying.

  • Comment removed

  • It is so sad that these people felt oppressed and stifled, and I just wish they could separate their negative memories from the truth and beauty of the Torah. As for the photo project, it does not show anyone "pursuing their dreams". Going on vacations and taking on middle-American consumerist ideals (the Hot Topic girl w/ the red stockings and the wrist cuff: she shed one costume just to take on another one!) is far less substantive that studying the infinite depth of the Torah.

  • @ilanarivkah So did the infinite depth and beauty of the Torah help you come up with that mistaken ill-informed notion that she had "shed one costume just to take on another"? The sad thing about frum ppl is not that they can't do what they want, but that they can't even think freely and outside their small confines of oppression.

  • @Alphasam8108 Why do you say it's ill-informed, exactly?

  • @ilanarivkah You ever went to college? Did you even get your GED? Ever studied anything besides the Torah? You're ignorant like the rest of your community. Go wallow in the stupidity of your 6 am minyan and feel like ur better then anyone else bec you go according to Moshe Feinshetin and he argues with the Gra- yeah whatever you ppl are pathetic and sad. General rule: frum people may be smart (however you define that term), but are overall close minded and pee-brained and box everything.

  • @Alphasam8108 none of the people in the video have a Ged or will ever graduate college, & while you diss frum people that get up in the morning to daven, well they are better than you because they are true to their commitment, while you are not, but if you want happiness & freedom make commitments(doesnt have to be frum one's),& be true to them & you wont be so hating, thats freedom, the system is far from perfect but just as you can beat the system by leaving you can beat it by doing FRUM right

  • @jamieitzy Doesn't your Torah tell you not to lie? ALL of these people have their GED AND went to or are attending college. You didn't lie you only bought in to the frum propaganda against anyone that doesn't follow your control freak ways. I can't blame you - you're just brainwashed.

  • @Alphasam8108 Your comment is not true. By the way, someone in the picture is in medical school, while another has a BA. I know them personally.

  • @ll796 I think ur comment was meant to be directed at someone else. Once again, this whole bull sh:/t about "all those that leave are on drugs is so dumb let alone false. Frum ppl are so threatened by those that leave (they're also secretly jealous) that they can never ever even entertain the notion that an alternate lifestyle to the way you were brought up is just the way the world works. These control freak propagandists must have you enslaved in their community for all eternity.

  • @Alphasam8108 Very well said, especially the "secretly jealous". I've got a ton of freidns in the community who confess to me that they'd do it if they had nothing at stake like family, wife, and children...

  • @ilanarivkah infinite depth of the torah? what a crock of shit, its a bronze age book written by goat herders, read the damn book in an openminded fashion u sheep

  • @joshieberger Have you ever tried herding goats? It's a disciplined task that requires maturity, patience, foresight and an even temper. Anyway, I'm sorry you feel the way you do about the Torah, about me and about yourself.

  • @ilanarivkah none of the qualities u mention are evident in the old testament, thus i presume ur wrong, again, and dont gimme ur pity, thanx
