  • wonderful , thanks for sharing

  • WOW!!!!!!! I would love to be able to play a quarter of Paco Pena ability. Ive never heard such guitar.

  • me encantan granadinas!!!

  • Why can i not get enough of this? i heard 2:40 to 3:04 a million itmes i just found this video. 2:40 to 3:04 is a piece of heaven in sound form

  • @nobodyx7 Sounds almost like Malaguena which he does play at 3:15

  • Brava Brava!

  • i love the part from 2:40-3:05. Does anyone know if that is a part of some other piece?

  • @ocybin Asturias from I.Albeniz

  • Up until 46 seconds is Nino ricardo, and then that beautiful picado I am assuming he wrote. This is what i like about paco pena so much. He puts together old traditional falsertas and renews them with his own insight and perfect technique. A fucking master, I can't wait to play like him.

  • @metalhead654 I enjoyed your comment and wonder how you are coming along in your quest to "play like him". BTW I am a huge old-school metal fan, even though my first love is opera.

  • Take me, spanish caravan, yes i know you can

  • love the asturias part

  • Un gran Guitarrista, magia pura.

  • are there any duets with pena and de lucia. can they even be in the same room

  • @RDbushi I think the universe would collapse if they ever played something together.

  • This guy has a marvelous sense of space- particularly unusual for a Flamenco guitarist. His contrast of punchy frentic solos and thickly-textured tuttis make this a marvelous impro-composition. The bright cutting tenor of this guitar perfectly suits his expressive intents.

  • Superb. My favourite piece by Paco Pena, I play it over and over.

  • Wow the beginning part all the time.........Not the chords he was playing, but I feel my fingers always going fast and being very balanced on a nylon string..

  • its so clean , its awesome.

  • Very nice stufff....Nice post....sweet technique and sound and nice blanca guitar, too.

  • 5 losers

  • so fucking good

  • este granadinas es una mescla de falsettas de Sabicas y nino Ricardo.

  • @mrboppman1 y albenis..

  • @hggh93 de verdad !

  • amazin!

  • so powerful and rich .. i think those feelings are what make us different from other animals

  • Amazing, mesmerizing, fantastic; I can't seem to find the right adjective to convey how great this performance is.

  • @2royplayer I have been listening to Paco all my life and I still can't find the adjective. Peña is overwhelming!

  • greatness

  • amo este vídeo , bueno , , usted , need to listen

  • he has the same right hand position of thumb to fingers as his buddy John Williams. Co-incidence?

  • carry me caravan take me away

  • increíble

  • There are five deaf people who visited this page.

  • I have to humbly admit I stole that quote about The Mighty Atom. But it is so appropriate aint it!

  • themosmitsos, Segovia composed a little piece called " Estudio sin luz"

You should hear it , it is extremely beautiful. I think it might refer to the attic he lived in while studying to be the great guitarist and transposer that he was. Anyone who speaks Spanish... Can the title refer to a "Study", as in attic or does it have to mean "Study", as in musical composition?

  • Paco Pena...mighty atom of Flamenco guitar

  • @TheBobnalyd very , very well expressed!

  • you registered this video using a dvd recorder, from a cassette, didn't you? however it is great!

  • Peña is unbelievable

  • esos arpegios hacen cosquillas dentro de mis oídos. arte puro

  • leyenda was written on spanish theme(flamenco), that is reason why you can hear some parts of leyenda in flamenco music...

  • @Jaksha92 more then that, it was written based on the tradtional grandina scale

  • Simply amazing.

  • sometimes when he looks at the guitar he looks like he cant even believe how good that sounds :-D

  • Même le plus con des types ne peut qu'admirer (exepté peut-être ces cinq-ci)!

  • Paco el P I M P

  • 3:10 is awesome. Alzapua and a tremolo note! Leyenda?

  • what's with this "paco" name? are all pacos great in flamenco...hehe i think am gonna name my child paco....maybe he will be a gr8 guitarist lol

  • in spanish whos called FRANCISCO by friends is called PANCHO or PACO more or less like Anthony can be called Tony

  • bravo paco tocas como los dioses

  • Damn 70s TV sound quality!

  • what a divine rendition! i never get tired listening to it. Love the intro and that line from 3:33 - 3:35...

  • Yeah. I've listened to this over and over again for three years now. I think it gets very melodious from 3:43 on. Paco Pena is a great all around guitarist, very technically sound and his notes are very clean and crisp. I have so much respect for him.

  • que pedazo de Granadinas...

  • grande!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • beautiful

  • I like this guy. He has Fuego!

  • Comment removed

  • Dude I'm not referring to whatever your comment said. I know well what Asturias sounds like, and when I said hilarious, I was trying to express the randomness of it being in this song.

  • whoah how did asturias make it into that song? kinda hilarious

  • Comment removed

  • The name of this granadinas is "clara fuente"

    I like it a lot

  • not spanish caravan from morisson but asturias

  • Straight from God!

  • holy crap that intro is insane

  • Spanish caravan!!

    It's a trap! : P

  • lol admiral ackbar, nailed it

  • superb

  • elegance

  • the best of the world

  • ALthough i love all flamenco and Paco Pena is most definately more than just a world famous guitarist. From what i have learnt about flamenco it is that everyone who plays flamenco and music in general they all have special abilities within playing. This is the best bit and thats why you should never compare or judge anyone. The people who can will play the people who cant become critics. Just enjoy it.

  • Paco De Lucia is much closer to the gypsy style of playing and also can picado upto 14 notes per second i think but dont quote me on it. In my opinion Paco De lucia is the worlds best guitarist full stop. Paco Pena is a soloist for sure and when he puts shows on with dancers he will always hire other musicians like the losada brothers to accompany him as they have very fast picado too and are very true to the gypsy flamenco that we all love. Just some thoughts, its all good. Enjoy.

  • I Think Paco Pena is a great guitarist and i have studied his style it is old school. Paco De Lucia is GOD he reinvented flamenco guitar and it would not be what it is today if it were not for him. Paco Pena is a very clean player and is well liked among classical guitarists. Paco De Lucia is much closer to the gypsy style of playing and also can picado upto 14 notes per second i think but dont quote me on it. In my opinion Paco De lucia is the worlds best guitarist full stop.

  • This is great. At 3:16 he plays Leyenda. Very nice fusion.

  • Comment removed

  • what kind of body wood is he using?

  • I would say it's cypres wood because most flamenco guitars are made with this kind of wood.

  • "So you're saying de lucia authored songs? I often heard music theory was his weakness and not where his talent lies."

    ???

Music theory? what the fuck? Doesnt make sense. That doesnt mean his songs arent authored, he made like 50 albums, and its not a question of "music theory" but creativity, think so.

  • Do a search around and get to know your favorite guitarist before mentioning about who borrows around and what, dufus.

  • Ditto with the other guy, you don't grasp what music theory is, BUT let's not piss on De Lucia because Pena's better. And everybody does borrow from everybody.

Briefly, Theorist=titan. A composer generally authors music within a style while a theorist defies style and expends/invents new one (usually more than one). Ex. Lucia basically composer/author, Pena theorist, but Pena is composer compared to Segovia (as is everyone else). Ex, Mozart Wagner Beethoven theorists, Paganini Brahms composers.

  • Paco Pena is a great and very accomplished guitarist. My hat's off to him. I have listened to classical & flamenco all my life and it never bores me to watch him play, even the same song over and over again. I am not going to get into the debate of who's better. But if I have my choice between Pena and De Lucia, the choice is obvious to me. Pena's notes just sounds so amazingly clean and crisp!

  • such an amazing guitar player.

  • Ok, read to me, I'm spanish and my dad is a nice flamenco player, for this reason I've listen flamenco all my live, and now read carefully: Here in Spain, people never ever speak about who is better player, we enjoy guitar sound, we enjoy that feel and nothing more, so to the people who look at flamenco players: Listen, feel, enjoy and cheers.

  • Hey I like that view!

  • Some players feel more connected with other players, this is natural as similar birds flock together, no reason for any discussion. I do not like Carlos Santana guitar style but many think I am crazy.

  • @PasionGuitarra

" Here in Spain, people never ever speak about who is better player, we enjoy guitar sound, we enjoy that feel and nothing more, so to the people who look at flamenco players: Listen, feel, enjoy and cheers."

    Beautifully put. Thank you.

    Viva España :)

  • @PasionGuitarra 100% right. And you don't have to be Spanish, or even play the instrument, to understand and feel that. (from Canada)

  • @PasionGuitarra good comment.I agree.

    alex

  • @PasionGuitarra

Yes, Music is not a contest, we doesn't play against over musicians, but with them.

But i have to say, there is a kind of "pseudo flamenco" like armik or Jesse Cock, who made so much money with this pseudo flamenco and there is Paco Pena oder de Lucía who can live from their music but they arent rich as Jesse Cock.. someone who puts shame on this art and doesn't respect this outstanding art get so much acceptence from the people. Unfair world...

  • @GuitarraFlamenca1000 I definitely see your pt. This world is boundlessly "unfair" in countless ways.

  • @GuitarraFlamenca1000 I don't mind that someone 'pops' flamenco but it's not for me. I personally can't stand pop flamenco like Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook etc.... This is a master performance. Music at the highest level.

  • @PasionGuitarra asi se habla osssstia ya

  • @PasionGuitarra Agreed. Wish everything here wasn't a competition.

  • when people say that one player is better than another, all they are REALLY saying is that

they prefer to listen to that player. Personally i love paco pena's feel and melodic and rhythmic style, it hits me right in the guts. I could say that he is better than, say- paco de lucia, but it it relative to what you prefer, that would just be my opinion. I love both, infact-i love almost all flamenco guitarists, bar very few because they all have elements that i enjoy.

  • Why not just appreciate each player for the different styles they have? I try to listen to as many different players and styles as I can and see what I can learn from them all.

  • No, no, you have to endlessly argue and bicker and blabber on and on! Otherwise, how could you appreciate the music?

  • Why do people always have to go on and on about who is better? Sadly, they are all better than me.T_T and probably you too. ( unless you are Paco Cepero or Moraito or Tomatito or one of those guys)

  • I prefer Pena to Lucia now that I'm all grown up.

  • Good. He's in my top 3 all-time guitarists and my be my favorite of all. My wish is to go to Spain and meet him soon before his artistry is on the downswing.

  • great melody, thats what makes him better than da lucia if anything

  • 3:18 - 3:30 asturias fragnment. This granaina is very creative composition by paco peña.

  • very touching, awesome

  • wow this song was almost all tremolo and still sounded good

  • hes good.

  • scary

  • To answer your question, most classical makers make flamenco guitars. Good ones will start at around 1-1500 pounds sterling. Concert models go 3000 upwards. Paco's will no doubt be a fine example, and disregarding the fact that he owns it, could well be worth over 20k. If you are just starting out, just get yourself a classical and go from there. Try and find one with a brighter than average tone, and if you get into it, get a students flamenco Guitar, they do them for about £300

  • Wow... I really want to own a very good one. But no money. I have one but only cost $1500 NZD not pounds not flamanco.

  • it also takes 30 years or more to train them there muscles he's plucking it with. That is one LOUD guitar player.

  • what kind of guitar is paco playing? make/type, just getting in to flamenco music and wanting to know what kind of guitar i should get.

  • This is not exactly my expert area, but its likely that he is playing a fairly old (vintage, if you like) guitar, as they get better with age. This is a flamenco specific guitar, as you can see from the peg head (as opposed to geared tuners) and the fact that the back and sides are the same colour as the top. This usually means the back and sides are made of cypress, which is the traditional wood for Flamenco. It has the bright cutting tone needed for flamenco, to be heard over the clapping etc.

  • not really. better the guitar, the thinner the top. The thinner the top, the shorter the lifespan.

  • If I could play just 10 seconds of that I'd be the happiest man alive!

  • Hopefuly, someday..

  • he plays the motif of leyenda in this

  • There are many things in this world people can not really compare which one is better than the other one. It's all based on from which angle we look at things. I like both Paco De Lucia and Paco Pena. They both great flamenco guitarists. After all, they both created wonderful music for people.

  • agreed

  • i think each one, de lucia and penã, has a very unique sound, in some technics de lucia is better and in others penã is better.

  • Pena plays "songs", de Lucia plays "fast notes". That would be my overall conclusion from listening to their music for a long time now. I prefer to listen to songs, but (also this) comparison is useless.

They both reached an incredible level of techniques, experience and flamenco theory. (As have many other great players.)

  • You're opinion is fair...but in theory if you do understand music you should appreciate all of the songs.Cheers

  • appreciation goes out to all songs. The rest I see as a matter of taste. they both did/ do incredible and wonderfull things.

  • And you confirmed and understood the theory...and that is great.Cheers

  • Dont limit paco de lucia to just "fast notes" I saw him in Copenhagen some years ago and experienced some thing like a musical orgasm during one of his slow and more weird numbers. The intensity and skill of the sound of each note was magical!! Eventhough i didnt understand and fully apreciate that song, i was transported somehwere else. The room dissapeard and everything just became sound!

Havent had that experience before or since.

  • understandable.

  • Reducing Paco de Lucía to just fast notes I think is rather silly, the man revolutionized flamenco and is one of the most complete musicians I've ever heard.

Paco Peña is a great guitarist, but most of his (at least a bit older) songs are largely borrowed from other guitarists, including Paco de Lucía. This granaína for example is almost identical to one by Sabicas. No crime there, just mentioning.

I don't like comparing guitarists, the fast notes comment of Paco just bothered me.

  • thats how they learn, even Paco de Lucia said that, he learned everything played from el Niño Ricardo and just kind of added in his own style, and from sabicas too

  • Yes I know that's how they learn. I'm not putting any guitarist down here, I'm just putting down the statement that "paco de lucia plays fast notes whereas paco pena plays songs", which implies that Paco de Lucia's compositions are somehow inferior to Peña's... which is ridiculous! Paco Peña is awesome. And Paco de Lucia is (in my opinion!) the best. But opinions aside, Paco de Lucia is more than fast notes! peace out

  • I stay with my conclusion. Hope you can still sleep now. They are both unmatched in their own way. Cheers.

  • No need to be a douche mate, I sleep fine :D

    Have a good one

  • Funny comment. Paco Pena "borrowed" from other guitarists inc. Paco de Lucia.

So you're saying de lucia authored songs? I often heard music theory was his weakness and not where his talent lies.

    Very funny statement.

  • There was a time when i thought Paco Pena is superior to Paco de Lucia, but i didn't knew too much regarding technique and flamenco theory, all that matters is that Paco de Lucia reached an unbelievable experience and knowledge.Nowadays,to me, de Lucia is the best

  • Beautiful. This man creates art with his every flourish.

  • if your left handed and you play guitar the "noramal" right handed way would that restrict your ability/ speed? I play this way.

  • Then you must be a genius because it is complicated for the brain.

  • Heh! Didn't notice it before but, he incoporates a theme from Albeniz's Leyendas Asturias into this piece. It's toward the end right before the heavily tremolado parts.

  • Extraordinaire !!!

  • As a guitarist myself, I will say this and no more:

I have yet to hear anything by this man that has not left me astounded by his prodigious ability.

  • quoted for truth.

  • i totally agree! i've been playing guitar(nothing like this) for years and when i watch this man i want to smash my guitar into pieces and set it on fire- how can anyone be such a genius?

  • Set your guitar on fire? Nonsense, my friend! Let the flames of your inspiratio be fanned by this man's spark of genius and the wind of your desire to play. Men like him are very much our holy grail. Forever must we quest to get as close as we can to what they do. Who knows, someday we may get there. anything can happen! We are guitarists after all!

  • Yes. I agree. He's to me more virtuous than Paco De Lucia. Such a talent that we don't see much in America.

  • if anyone has seen anyone with a better right hand I'd like to know about it.

  • giggedy giggedy

  • The falsetta beginning 3,11 is the lead melody from Asturias.

  • I met Paco Peña in Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba 1989..he was just arrive from Holland to see my group play on that Festival..great person and musician !!

  • I met Paco in 1975 in Holland, he was amasing then and he still is, great guitar player....

  • paco kadar olamaz puede no hasta paco favorecido

  • a real guitar master.

i remember about 20 yrs ago that i was listening

my two tapes with his music, and as a young guitarist, i only wanted(i was praying) to get to play some of his fantastic works.

    great

  • THAT...is some badass shit!!

  • Holy shit, that's amazing!

  • VERY NICE!

  • Paco,

This is René Sahir. It is always great to hear your guutar playing! Great as usual!

    Blessing!

  • How could anyone find fault with such playing?

He is vicious with that guitar--at times he sounds as if he is strangling it--he wrests everything from the instrument that is can offer. Really, there is nothing left. A master.

  • Isn't that the way it is with emotions? They aren't always clean, and light, and airy. In my opinion, if a piece of music does not reflect this fact, then it is just a frivolous piece of commercial waste product (aka. sh**). I like to be moved by the music. This moves me, so I like it.

  • yep. he just stole my lunch money.

  • I like the way it's not a performance of affectation: he doesn't writhe about like he is being tortured on the rack - he doesn't need to affect his performance the guitar is eloquent enough when Paco is playing it.

  • you better hear it played by Paco De Lucia ..you can tell the different.

  • Great a man with a fantastic musical

    interpetation of true spanish,feeling.

  • Awesome!

  • he's a good guitarist, i prefer vicente amigo for his range of colour. do all flamenco players have to play in such a ponticello position? do they all have to use a capo??

  • MoneymikeLDN: judging Pena's sound based on the clips on youtube is not fair: you should really listen to one of his CD's. Paco Pena is a flamenco player who takes much care to get a good sound - more so than the average flamenco player. I think flamenco players tend to play more toward the ponticello position, because the string tension is lower on flamenco guitars. And you don't have to use a capo, that simply depends on the piece.

  • erm.. i dont need to hear the quality of sound, i can tell by the position of his hand over the sound hole. most flamenco players are stuck in ponticello, or have so much nail that their versatility is restricted. personally i think that when a guitar is taken our of the flamenco context (guitar/canto/baila) then you no longer need the hard sound as a constant. but thanks for the constructive parts of your comment :_)

  • well....I would really like to persuade you to listen to his CD's: he may play ponticelli, but his sound is far from metallic - indeed as you say in his solo playing he accentuates quality of sound over volume. He has a lovely 'silvery' sound, quite unique among flamenco players.

  • actually chap its nothing to do with the so called piece - the capo or cejilla is used solely to accompany the cantaor e.g. the camino gitano for buleria is to play with the cejilla at the 4th fret e.g tomatito and camaron, duquende and chicuelo , the solea de alcala generally at the 5th, malaguena at the 3rd. you are completely right tho its not set in stone and u can indeed play in open strings. regards

  • great! wonderfull!!!! pacooooooooooooooooooooo
