3J may be one of the only kid characters that weren`t added just because the youngest child was too old to be "cute". He was a necessary edition to the show. He and Richie were roughly the same age, so he wasn`t added because Richie got too old to be cute. 3J and Richie were friends, which Richie needed, because Richie didn`t have any kids around his age to play with. Judy was the closest in age to him and she was like 7 years older than he was.
