If that beetle is 3" long, then those ants are far to large to be fire ants. I'm from eastern New Mexico, and we just called those 'red ants'. Then I moved to Houston and found out what FIREANTS really are... very nasty small red ants that sting like hell.

I think those are harvester ants, don't know of any fire ants living in New Mexico, they all migrated to the east from Texas, fire ants are not natural to the U.S.,, they came from South America by a stupid scientist like the one who brought African Bees.

FYI, They aren't fire ants, fire ants are much smaller. Those are a species of Rough Harvester Ant(sometimes called the "red ant"depending on variety) and yah, they have make massive shield nests. Rough harvesters have a decent sting but should be left alone for a more important reason as they are very beneficial to the local ecology. Don't stamp em out ! The stink beatle has a very hard exosteleton and a repugnant odor that may have saved it even from this onslaught.
