@myfirsttyme the scripture you quoted in Eph.4:8,9 refer to God giving gifts to His followers so that they may serve in ministry. 1 Tim 3:1 refers to bishops. A bishop is an overseer the same meaning as shepard or pastor. The Bible never identify Gods children as leaders. The apostles never used the word leader. Love is the way, and if we love God we will keep his commands. (1 john 5:3). There are commands on 1) what people need to do to be saved, 2) how a worship service should be, 3) one church 4) titles and positions with in the church 5) Anything else you can think of, God already went over it in the new testament. It's out of love I have to show these things directly from the bible so people can see if they have been doing things wrong. I don't want anyone ending up like the people in matthew 7:22
A church name means a lot. Example, when you get your check, and it has another name on it, let's see how much a name means. Roman 16:16 was clear with what the name should be. There should not be a St. Johns, St. Peter or any other church but named after some one or thing other than Christ because the church is his body ( Colossians 1:24)....now why would Christ body be named anything else?
55dramos, you have to back up what you say with Bible book, chapter, and verse. 1) No other name but "Christian" is used for followers of Christ. Any other name is not in the Bible (Acts 11:26). Baptist is an occupation like Dentist, or any of the other titles with "ist" at the end....it is not the name for a child of God. If we stick to the script, everyone would be called Christian with out any sub title that causes division.
To be quite honest, ALL CHURCHES for the most part regardless of denomination have gone the way of catholicism. Spiritually speaking, I believe anything exalting a man is idolatrous. I love Bishop Patterson and have benefitted greatly from his ministry, and have no problem with pomp and circumstance. My question is about the military personnel rendering salutes. While Bishop is deserving of respect, doesn't seem to me that he is "qualified" to receive a military salute, especially indoors. Even for the dead servicemembers during a funeral, military personnel show respect for the moving casket/person by standing at attention as it/he/she passes, not by saluting. Seems wrong.
This is not Bishop Patterson's Final Convocation... the Final Convocation was at the FedEx Forum.. Bishop Throughgood was not the Adjutant General Bishop Matthew Williams Was... The final convocation was in 2006.
I can positively say Bishop Patterson has touched my life through his ministry and I never laid eyes on him. He was God's man of standard, one you would consider a spiritual father. A lot of these pastors and ministers can stand to learn a lot from him. Even in his passing, I still watch/listen to his sermons and he is awesome without a doubt.
I've never seen him live, never been to the States, but I always watched Bountiful Blessings and this man fed my spirit and inner man. I want to thank you for posting this. I am glad he was appreciated.

I found out that Bishop on occasion actually wore a tee shirt,short pants and flip flops.Nothing unholy,sacrilegious,or disrespectful about it. He was saved, he preached holiness, he lived faithful to the word of God. I just wanted to know what the symbolism behind the garments were. If he were here he would say just focus on Jesus. It's His blood that saves.

The vestments of the preists in the old testament have NOTHING to do with church leaders today. Put away vain traditions, get back to everything being about Christ and Him crucified.

The word ecclesia describes variuos social groups or associations found in the city. For instance, the synagogue of the Jews and the guild of private citizens centered on common interest,lifestyle,occupation or some other focus. The ecclesia of Christ had rules outlining who could be part of the association.
The ecclesia of Christ was structured and affected by the common life of the ecclesia. There were rules outlining who could be part of the association(e.g. commitment to Christ), how one became a member(e.g. baptism,Communion), who could be a leader(e.g. elders, deacons), and other guidelines. We must understand the historical background of the church before we interpret. I do not believe the attire is an issue. the issue is within our hearts. Do anyone the Old testement priest?

@bholyway I believe that Bishop Patterson was definitely a Holy man of God not withstanding that I'm not sure why he had on his cope & staff without being vested in a choir cassock, surplice or rochet, and his mitre which are all really signs of the office of Bishop. That would have been the correct way to vest because there are rubrics and manuals that give instruction because each piece of this investiture has a meaning and we wouldn't want to make a mockery of the office.
Those are my feelings exacly Iluvoldschool. The catholic church is the organization that misrepresents these words of Christ when he said "upon this rock I'll build my church." Seem like every church organization is more comfortable letting someone other than Christ lead them. They want to SEE their leaders, they want their leaders to tell them what to do so that they won't have to study the word and figure things out for themselves.
I read something very interesting in the book of Revelations that reflect Jesus Christ's attitude towards people ruling over his own people. In Rev 2:15, he mentions those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which Christ said HE HATES. The word Nicolaitanes come from the word "nico" which means "rule," and "laity" which means "people." So, the doctrines of the Nicolaitanes was the very doctrine that is displayed in this clip, a rulership(leader)over the people, and Christ hates this
Wow you hit on a good point Flesh. However I looked up the word Nicolaitans and I read that nico actually means victory. It's another form of the word nike which is the greek word for victory. But in a sense you are still correct because rulership over people means having victory over them and that's what the doctrine of the Nicolaitans is, and why Jesus hates it. His people were not to be lorded over like the gentiles do, he said so in Mark 10:43

I grew up in the Church Of God In Christ. Lots of rituals, preachers wearing long robes like the scribes(luke 20:46), lots of rules that were not based on the bible like not allowing women to wear pants and makeup, not going to movies, not dancing to "worldly" music, and all that mess. I didn't know better then, but thank God I've come to know that all this stuff is rank foolishness.
Many people who call themselves Christians make it a point not to listen to secular music, yet they do things that readily oppose the word of God. Too many people are concerned with things that are not forbidden by scripture, e.g. secular music, wearing lipstick, and other trivial things, but are not concerned with the more weightier issues like honoring your boss by arriving to work on time, being honest, paying your bills and rent on time, etc
I don't know if "worldy" music falls into the category of lust of this world or not.I do know that the phrase "worldy music" is nowhere to be found in the bible. Paul never said "obey them that have the rule over you," the translators of the king james version did. It's important to know what the original greek says in that passage. Here's what this verse literally says, "Be persuaded of them who are guiding you." The greek word translated "obey" is "peitho" and it means "be persuaded." The greek word translated RULE is "hegeomai", and it means guide. We are not to obey anybody but God, because no other person is to be our "leader."

The people who sheparded the flock back in the days of the early church were elders, and elders back then were not "elders" of today. They were not appointed ministers who lorded over a congregation. The word "elder" in the greek simply means "senior", as in an elderly person who because of their age, were more experienced in the scriptures, therefore were more apt to teach and guide people in the scriptures better than a young person.

It's pretty typical of people like you who come down on others because of "too much learning." I'd rather search the scriptures like the Bereans did, and see whether what I'm taught is true instead of being a mind-numbed sheep being carried away by every wind of doctrine. You won't find one scripture where Paul appointed a pastor nor a bishop. Matter of fact, you won't find that anyone in the days of the early church even worshipped in a church building, let alone conducted paganistic rituals like the one in this clip. Churches then were held in houses(Rom 16:5,1 Cor 1:11,1 Cor 16:19,Col 4:15,Phi 2). The origin of church buildings is a rather interesting one, rooted in paganism. Paul did not train Titus and Timothy for the purpose of making them leaders of the church. Remember, Jesus told the disciples to call no man, "leader." And he also told James and John that no person will have authority over the flock like the gentiles excercise authority over people. Paul trained Timothy to be a guide to younger believers, not be a leader over them. That was the purpose for elders.

My last point was that people tend to put more emphasis on the church building more than on obeying God. The word "church" in scripture doesn't even MEAN a building, it's from the greek word "ecclesia" and it means "called out ones." So this is my point, people like you are so wrapped up in buildings being the "church" when the church is nothing of the sort. It's the BODY of believers, and they are a body wherever they meet, whether it's in a house, a street corner, or wherever.

They didn't once say "We worship you Bishop Patterson" They are honoring the ones who LEADS them and has committed his life to bringing people together to honor God who is the head of all. When Jesus said to Peter upon this rock I will build my church, he didn't mean that he will build his church on Peter, he meant he will build the church on the declaration that Peter made and that was "You(Jesus) are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus never appointed one single leader in his church. He told his disciples in Mark 10:42 &43 that nobody would exercise authority over anybody in his church like the gentiles do

There is only ONE leader of the Church and that is Jesus Christ. He is the head of the body according to Colossians 1:18. Not Patterson, not Black, not any so-called preacher or pastor. But unfortunately, people blindly worship these figures, which is what this clip is all about

Well I had not heard about him, but just by seeing this I see he was really a man of God. Is this a baptist methodist church?! He did not wear the mitre but that is maybe not customary in this church?
It's crazy but when he walked in it felt like this was it. He is so greatly missed and it was awesome to witness the anointing of God as he strengthened him beyond his stamina to bring the word that day. I am glad I was there.

@myfirsttyme the scripture you quoted in Eph.4:8,9 refer to God giving gifts to His followers so that they may serve in ministry. 1 Tim 3:1 refers to bishops. A bishop is an overseer the same meaning as shepard or pastor. Love is the way, and if we love God we will keep his commands. (1 john 5:3). There are commands on 1) what people need to do to be saved, 2) how a worship service should be, 3) one church 4) titles and positions with in the church 5) Anything else you can think of, God already went over it in the new testament. It's out of love I have to show these things directly from the bible so people can see if they have been doing things wrong. I don't want anyone ending up like the people in matthew 7:22

A church name means a lot. Example, when you get your check, and it has another name on it, let's see how much a name means. Roman 16:16 was clear with what the name should be. There should not be a St. Johns, St. Peter or any other church but named after some one or thing other than Christ because the church is his body ( Colossians 1:24)....now why would Christ body be named anything else?

55dramos, you have to back up what you say with Bible book, chapter, and verse. 1) No other name but "Christian" is used for followers of Christ. Any other name is not in the Bible (Acts 11:26). Baptist is an occupation like Dentist, or any of the other titles with "ist" at the end....it is not the name for a child of God. If we stick to the script, everyone would be called Christian with out any sub title that causes division.

I love Bishop Patterson and have benefitted greatly from his ministry, and have no problem with pomp and circumstance. My question is about the military personnel rendering salutes. While Bishop is deserving of respect, doesn't seem to me that he is "qualified" to receive a military salute, especially indoors. Even for the dead servicemembers during a funeral, military personnel show respect for the moving casket/person by standing at attention as it/he/she passes, not by saluting. Seems wrong.

I can positively say Bishop Patterson has touched my life through his ministry and I never laid eyes on him. He was God's man of standard, one you would consider a spiritual father. A lot of these pastors and ministers can stand to learn a lot from him. Even in his passing, I still watch/listen to his sermons and he is awesome without a doubt.

I found out that Bishop on occasion actually wore a tee shirt,short pants and flip flops.Nothing unholy,sacrilegious,or disrespectful about it. He was saved, he preached holiness, he lived faithful to the word of God. I just wanted to know what the symbolism behind the garments were. If he were here he would say just focus on Jesus. It's His blood that saves.

The word ecclesia describes variuos social groups or associations found in the city. The ecclesia of Christ was structured and affected by the common life of the ecclesia. There were rules outlining who could be part of the association(e.g. commitment to Christ), how one became a member(e.g. baptism,Communion), who could be a leader(e.g. elders, deacons), and other guidelines. We must understand the historical background of the church before we interpret. I do not believe the attire is an issue. the issue is within our hearts. Do anyone the Old testement priest?

@bholyway I believe that Bishop Patterson was definitely a Holy man of God not withstanding that I'm not sure why he had on his cope & staff without being vested in a choir cassock, surplice or rochet, and his mitre which are all really signs of the office of Bishop. That would have been the correct way to vest because there are rubrics and manuals that give instruction because each piece of this investiture has a meaning and we wouldn't want to make a mockery of the office.

Those are my feelings exacly Iluvoldschool. The catholic church is the organization that misrepresents these words of Christ when he said "upon this rock I'll build my church." Seem like every church organization is more comfortable letting someone other than Christ lead them. They want to SEE their leaders, they want their leaders to tell them what to do so that they won't have to study the word and figure things out for themselves.

I read something very interesting in the book of Revelations that reflect Jesus Christ's attitude towards people ruling over his own people. In Rev 2:15, he mentions those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which Christ said HE HATES. The word Nicolaitanes come from the word "nico" which means "rule," and "laity" which means "people." So, the doctrines of the Nicolaitanes was the very doctrine that is displayed in this clip, a rulership(leader)over the people, and Christ hates this

Wow you hit on a good point Flesh. However I looked up the word Nicolaitans and I read that nico actually means victory. It's another form of the word nike which is the greek word for victory. But in a sense you are still correct because rulership over people means having victory over them and that's what the doctrine of the Nicolaitans is, and why Jesus hates it. His people were not to be lorded over like the gentiles do, he said so in Mark 10:43

I grew up in the Church Of God In Christ. Lots of rituals, preachers wearing long robes like the scribes(luke 20:46), lots of rules that were not based on the bible like not allowing women to wear pants and makeup, not going to movies, not dancing to "worldly" music, and all that mess. I didn't know better then, but thank God I've come to know that all this stuff is rank foolishness.

Many people who call themselves Christians make it a point not to listen to secular music, yet they do things that readily oppose the word of God. Too many people are concerned with things that are not forbidden by scripture, e.g. secular music, wearing lipstick, and other trivial things, but are not concerned with the more weightier issues like honoring your boss by arriving to work on time, being honest, paying your bills and rent on time, etc

It's not just music that opposes the word of God, it's doctrines also. To call a human "leader" goes against Jesus command to call no man leader, and also his command to the disciples that he will not have leaders in his body. When you focus on something other than your own violations, you throw up smokescreens

But what the bible means by "peculiar" doesn't have anything to do with these nonsense rituals. If you read 1 peter 2:9&10 you'll see what makes us a peculiar people. It's to show forth praises of him who called us out of darkness, not show praises to so called leaders of a denomination. Yes, every church has its own rituals, and they are all nonsense, not just this one here where they make an ordinary human a "leader" of Christ's church.

paul appointed "leaders" b/c he appointed pastors are pastors not the "leaders" & teachers of their local church? he also sets the criteria for a bishop which is a spiritual leader he also says obey them that have RULE over you in the Lord for this is right i can make many more points to debate you as im sure u could also but the bottom line is no1 is worshipping a man here COGIC is an organization & they were honoring the head of that which is no sin 2 much learning has made ye mad(crazy)

Paul never said "obey them that have the rule over you," the translators of the king james version did. It's important to know what the original greek says in that passage. Here's what this verse literally says, "Be persuaded of them who are guiding you." The greek word translated "obey" is "peitho" and it means "be persuaded." The greek word translated RULE is "hegeomai", and it means guide. We are not to obey anybody but God, because no other person is to be our "leader."

ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God,and is profitable for doctrine,reproof,correction,for instruction in righteousness.Leaders were appointed to shephard the flock.Paul said it best 1st Corinthians 11:1-Follow me,as I follow Christ.Peter talks about the shephard caring for the flock the proper way.

The people who sheparded the flock back in the days of the early church were elders, and elders back then were not "elders" of today. They were not appointed ministers who lorded over a congregation. The word "elder" in the greek simply means "senior", as in an elderly person who because of their age, were more experienced in the scriptures, therefore were more apt to teach and guide people in the scriptures better than a young person.

Where does the bible command us to become fools? You'll have to show me that scripture. And I'm not going to apologize for studying the word and obtaining knowledge. It's pretty typical of people like you who come down on others because of "too much learning." I'd rather search the scriptures like the Bereans did, and see whether what I'm taught is true instead of being a mind-numbed sheep being carried away by every wind of doctrine. I was ignorantly following COGIC tradition back in the day, and it got me nowhere. Learning the scriptures and what they say in the hebrew and greek instead of faulty translations helped me out of that COGIC bondage

You won't find one scripture where Paul appointed a pastor nor a bishop. Matter of fact, you won't find that anyone in the days of the early church even worshipped in a church building, let alone conducted paganistic rituals like the one in this clip. Churches then were held in houses(Rom 16:5,1 Cor 1:11,1 Cor 16:19,Col 4:15,Phi 2). The origin of church buildings is a rather interesting one, rooted in paganism. But I'm sure you wouldn't want to read about that for fear of "learning too much!"

Paul did not train Titus and Timothy for the purpose of making them leaders of the church. Remember, Jesus told the disciples to call no man, "leader." And he also told James and John that no person will have authority over the flock like the gentiles excercise authority over people. Paul trained Timothy to be a guide to younger believers, not be a leader over them. That was the purpose for elders.

My last point was that people tend to put more emphasis on the church building more than on obeying God. The word "church" in scripture doesn't even MEAN a building, it's from the greek word "ecclesia" and it means "called out ones." So this is my point, people like you are so wrapped up in buildings being the "church" when the church is nothing of the sort. It's the BODY of believers, and they are a body wherever they meet, whether it's in a house, a street corner, or wherever.

Four times, "Bishop" Blake refers to GE Patterson as "our leader." I thought that Jesus Christ was the leader of the church? That's what is wrong with so meny churches, particularly the black church. They put so much stock and emotion in MEN as leaders, and are not lead by Christ. The COGIC is no different, and perhaps the very worst example of messed up doctrines and traditions

Barak Obama is the leader of the United States. And Bishop Patterson was the leader of the COGIC. They didn't say he was the God of COGIC they said he was the leader. You have to have a leader to be ahead of something that is an organized body of people. Not the best argument dear.

I defined what leader meant as opposed to who God is. Don't you have a boss on your job? They didn't once say "We worship you Bishop Patterson" They are honoring the ones who LEADS them and has committed his life to bringing people together to honor God who is the head of all. This is the same reason why people stand up when the President of the Unites States enters the room. It is a CULTURAL form of respect for those who commit their lives and lead in a purpose all believe. .

Mark 10:42, Jesus told the disciples, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the gentiles exercise lordship over them;and their great ones exercise authority over them, BUT IT SHALL NOT BE AMONG YOU. That's why Paul chastised the church at Corinth because they heaped so much praise on their "leaders." And no, not everybody is a follower of Christ. Just like the example I quoted in 1 Corinthians 12 and 13, some people claimed to follow Paul, some claimed to follow Apollos, and some Cephas(Peter). People in the COGIC, as this clip shows, follow Patterson, or whoever took his place. So many denominations, so many leaders, so much confusion! :)

You are talking Old Testament where God put kings and judges to rule over his people, not to mention that he only put kings over Israel because the PEOPLE wanted it and they did NOT want God to rule over them. Read 1 Samuel 8:5-22. Try reading the NEW testament, and read how JESUS is now the leader of the Church, which is the body of Christ, and that no king or judge nor PREACHER is to be the head of Christ's body.

yea jesus did call himself the leader of the church, but if you read the bible correctly he also told Peter upon this rock i will build my church and the gates of hell should not prevail against it... nobody worshipped bishop patterson, he was a leader, just like any other bishop or pastor... People really need to know thing before you ramble on.... Jesus even appointed leaders, if he didn't then y would have have appointed the 12 disciples and then have then tarry for the Holy Ghost...

When Jesus said to Peter upon this rock I will build my church, he didn't mean that he will build his church on Peter, he meant he will build the church on the declaration that Peter made and that was "You(Jesus) are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus never appointed one single leader in his church. He told his disciples in Mark 10:42 &43 that nobody would exercise authority over anybody in his church like the gentiles do

I got to agree with this. I thought the same thing to when I saw this that it seem like they are worshipping bishop Paterson. We need to only follow one leader and that is Jesus Christ and nobody else.

@ladytraveler As far as Patterson not being the "god" of COGIC, the parishioners of the COGIC church certainly view him that way, or at least they DID when Patterson was alive. There is only ONE leader of the Church and that is Jesus Christ. He is the head of the body according to Colossians 1:18. Not Patterson, not Black, not any so-called preacher or pastor. But unfortunately, people blindly worship these figures, which is what this clip is all about

The truth is not popular among the multitude. That's why Jesus told the disciples that they would be cast out of the synagogues and would be hated of all men because their message wouldn't sit right with the deceived multitude. I was raised COGIC as a child, teen, and most of my extended family is still COGIC, from way back. My father always spoke against much of what COGIC does. One of the best decisions I ever made was to leave that denomination. He who the Son sets free....

It's crazy but when he walked in it felt like this was it. He is so greatly missed and it was awesome to witness the anointing of God as he strengthened him beyond his stamina to bring the word that day. I am glad I was there.

I feel like a piece of my history is gone now. I remeber the ole time way church used to be and I miss it so much. I remember when it wasn't "inspirational music" but gospel and the choir used to march in, and when the deacons used to get up and sing those old hymns. Man, Bishop Patterson represented all that. That ole time spirit that was way down on the inside that told you that if you didn't have nothing or nobody u had Jesus. You ran your race now go on to hear well done. God Bless.
