  • yes the lion king is based off of hamlet. but you know disney has to change some things around to make it more appropriate for kids.

  • and hamlet is also similar to the egyptian osiris and seth myth

    just compare,

    horus-hamlet-simba

    osiris-king hamlet-mufasa

    isis-gertrude-sarabi

    seth-claudius-scar

    anubis-horatius-rafiki

the story is the same: a king is killet by his jelaous brother, and the prince takes revenge

i wonder,is hamlet a human version of the myth,or just chance?...i do not know that...

  • LOL @ nala going crazy

  • and then it all went awray......AHHHHHHHHHHH LOL

  • is the tucan-thing Polonius? Or maybe Reynaldo

  • hahaha i just finished reading hamlet for english class. I love this hahaha how inaccurate it is. its hilarious. taking tiny bits out of a clip of lion king to demonstrate an event in hamlet. i.e. simba reprimanding nala, supposed to represent Hamlet's resentment of Ophelia, also the play catching the conscience of the king, with timon and pumbaa, this is very funny too bad the movie didn't resemble hamlet as much as this.

  • longest "trailer" ever...but i enjoyed it,thanks

  • If you all would know we are TAUGHT IN SCHOOL that this plot is influenced by Hamlet. So do not question whoever made this video if they read Hamlet, because obviously they did? They never said the Lion king IS HAMLET the purpose of this video is to compare the similarities.

  • Pumba and Timon are almost certainly the Old Shepherd and Clown from 'The Winter's Tale' they speak comically by comparison to scenes in the kingdom, they have a weird unexplained relationship, they take care of the heir to a throne, and gain reward in the end.

  • that really helped me better understad Hamlit thank you.

Hope you got a good grade =).

  • the hyena's fill the spot of rosencrantz and huildenstern

  • timon and pumbaa dont fit the characters of rosencrantz and guildenstern.... nice try though. the key diff is that timon and pumbaa are loyal to simba and rosencrantz and guildenstern backstab hamlet

  • @Llam4Face yeah this movie and hamlet are similar in ways but differ in more ways. i do think timon and pumbaa do resemble rosencrantz and guildenstern in that they try to persuade hamlet to forget about his worries and problems as do R and G. although Rosencrant and guildenstern are more deceitful than timon and pumbaa. but there are themes of identity that both plots share. the ghost visit was another similarity.

  • @skooler44 good response :P

  • Nicely made vid!!! Though Disney, like in soooooo many other movies, has once again failed to bring the truth of the story of Hamlet to light. Oh well, at least the kids like it!

  • One must also keep in mind that this a Disney flick. So it's dumbed down a tad...:P

  • oh and thank you for making this video, a teacher at the college I attend played it for our class. She was under a delusion similar to yours. The delusion defined as believing a film is based on hamlet even though it lacks the conflicts of insanity, inaction, meddling, foreign invasion, suicide, and accidental murder, culminating in the deaths of almost the entire principal cast.

The film also lacks parallel characters for:

    Polonius

    Horatio

    Laertes

    Rosencrantz and Guildenstern

    Fortinbras

  • rosencrantz and guildenstern are timon and pumbaa.

  • @timlucier Hamelt hated R and G and sent them to their deaths.

  • Oh, and it's Disney. Look at what they did to Hercules. They change the stories.

  • "heavy influence" hardly heavy. The main conflicts of hamlet are not present in the lion king. There is some influence, the evidence is clear, some, not a lot. There are some similarities, but to attempt to call the lion king a kind of interpretation or adaptation of hamlet, or to say that disney could have made the plot more resemble hamlet is to not know hamlet.

  • Fucking awesome. That is all.

  • This was a nicely made video! I hope you and your partner received a good mark for it!

  • Haha very inaccurate but creative!

Sarabi does not marry Scar, and she doesnt die

Also Simba doesnt kill Nala's father and she doesnt drown herself, thats the scene when Simba pushes her in during the "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" montage...also Simba doesnt die

Sorry to rain on your parade but we cant have people going into english class talking bullshit! haha

Still applaud the creative and making it look like these things occured though...

  • I think that you have misinterpreted the goal of this video. I am very familiar with the plot line of the Lion King movie. Obviously, not everything in Hamlet could have happened in the Lion King because 1) It's a children's movie and 2) if it were too similar, Disney could not call it an "original movie." That does not lessen the fact that the Lion King is strongly influenced by Hamlet. This is a representation of what it would have been if Disney did not have the constraints that they did.

  • Ah...now it makes sense! Haha...I thought maybe you and your friend were theonly ones in the class who had seen the movie nd tricked everybody into thinking this had all happened! Makes more sense now! Sorry for the confusion

  • @divinedisarray I disagree. I don't think this was "strongly" influenced by Hamlet at all. So what, a jealous brother kills a king and sends the next in bloodline far away? That's not just Hamlet, that's a common theme and story throughout history if jealous nobility. Some of the "parallels" drawn were mere inventions; as mentioned, Sarabi doesn't remarry, and your Hamlet (Simba) doesn't go mad, kill people, and die. It's not even close to Hamlet, it just happens to include nobility struggles.

  • in a typical lion pride when the alpha male is chased out or killed, the winner takes the pride along with the lead lioness making him "king" per sey. the kid that made this video also did it so it could reinacted scenes from hamlet so some parts are not accurate. i agree it was very creative ;D

  • @Darzy92 its an archetype. it doesnt have to be right on. the general theme is there and thats wat makes it work.

  • @Darzy92: dude I'm an english/hist major and my concentration is literature and in every english I have ever had since 8th grade the teacher explains how at this point in time nothing is wholly original. whats worse is Disney never comes up with their own stories. case in point: They use Grimm's fairytales, cultural history or folklore(fa mulan and Pokahonas), and Robin hood and alice in wonderland are taken verbatim SORRY TO RAIN ON YOUR PARADE BUT THIS IS HAMLET WITH SEX AND DEATH REMOVED

  • @Sheadaddy908 The lion king is NOT hamlet, yeah the uncle kills the dad and the son revenges his death but thats a common theme in many many storys! how can you say that the lion king is hamlet,do you even know hamlet!

  • @Jizzinmypants2k9 dude they got the idea from hamlet yes they did your right it is a reoccurring theme your definitely right but hamlet is the most notable and thats where disney got the plot for the lion king oh and also tell me another classic story where the son avenges a father who was killed by an uncle....like right now off the top of your head. the first thing that comes to mind is hamlet duh

  • @Sheadaddy908 yeah i know that the lion king is based on hamlet but to say it is hamlet is wrong!

  • @Darzy92 You clearly haven't been to an English class. The point of English is to interpret texts and draw comparisons. Not all interpretations are expected to be the same, are they? Not all comparisons are going to be exactly the same because that would defeat the purpose of creating original thought. I can see the similarities between the texts, but I can also see that the author wasn't trying to make out that both texts are the same.

  • lol, nice vid, kinda creepy with the simliarities

  • haha, amazing, we saw this clip in todays english lesson, because we're going to read some scenes from hamlet... it's very surprising to see the similarities between the plots. Well, in the Lion King they didn't die at the end... not everyone like in Shakespears plays :-P!

But it is very good... it's so popular, that my teacher uses it! xD

  • Wow, great job! I've known alreaday that The Lion King had Hamlet elements in it, but I only thought about the king being murdered by his own brother and the ghost's visit parts. You guys pointed out so much more!

Haha, I like the play part.

This must've been quite fun to make for school! The only thing wrong with it is the audio's a bit of, but I think that's YouTube's messing it up.

    Cool video!

  • coool thx 4 the help !!!!!!! (english hw) lol thx

    good job :P

  • oh wow this was only posted yesterday! good timing! haha. This was amazing. good job, really! I was trying to think of some of the similiarities and this helped a lot!
