You can't really compare Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins just because they were part of the same era of music. They had completely different musical styles. I'm a die hard Pumpkin fan to the end, but I like Nirvana too. There's nothing wrong with liking both of them.
good chance they are all assholes, I'm from mexico but I have memory pole where SP was more first nirvana, bunch of assholes and my two bands are good
Nirvana had like 2 or 3 songs that i liked. SP > Nirvana. If I didn't believe Courtney Love killed Kurt, i would've said he did it cuz he couldn't come up with any new material
Damn, Nirvana was good, original band but there vere much other bands out there that vere a little bit better. And Smashing Pumpkins is on of them. Ofcourse, that's just my opinion :)
The Smashing Pumpkins are better than Nirvana. Jimi Hendrix was one of the greatest if not the greatest rockers of all time, and he didn't invent rock n' roll. A band doesn't have to invent a style of music to be good at it.
damn right. Most of the stuff that never made it to an album for the Pumpkins blows away nearly every other band in their era/genre. Im looking at you Nirvana!
Ehh, excuse me, Nirvana happened to revolutionize rock as we know it today. Served as an inspiration to just about every alternative band going today, including Billy.
Also, Smashing Pumpkins being my other favourite band to Nirvana aren't to be compared. It's like comparing The Beatles to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin to Black Sabbath, you just don't do it. They're all to be respected.
Nirvana revolutionised rock? That's a pretty bold statement that I disagree with.
And Billy taking inspiration from Kurt? Now you're just talking shit. Billy was depressed around the time between Gish & Siamese Dream because Nirvana's bland angsty (but catchy) songs were gettin so much airplay. He persevered and pursued his own direction and came out with SD, one of the greatest albums of the 90s.
Lets not argue with opinions, but you have to realise that not everyone kisses Nirvanas ass guy.
Of course they did. Who else drew inspiration from REM? as well as them fueling Nirvana, if you doubt that just do some research.
If you read up, Billy actually respected Nirvana, he actually said in a statement that he liked the competition and rivalry from Nirvana, he said then it was real, it meant something, but now he hasn't got a band that poses as real competition.
Somewhere down the line 99% of artists draw inspiration from each other, and Billy certainly did from Nirvana.
I love both SP and Nirvana, but Corgan did not draw inspiration from Nirvana or Kurt. Maybe in a friendly competition kind of way, but musically there is no inspiration at all. They sound nothing alike. SP isnt even grunge. Musically, Nirvana was inspired greatly by Pixies, REM, the Melvins, and Dinosaur jr among others. SP was heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Joy Division, My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd among others. anyway, maybe u were talking about something different..
@englandink you're speaking in riddles. Billy may have been inspired by Nirvana's commercial success, but not their art, and I'd rather take the "failure" of Adore to a desert island than Nevermind.
@irishbull777 I'll be the first to admit "Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage" is a terrible lyric (though maybe it's so bad it's good?) but TSP had more range than Nirvana up to whenever it was Kurt ate the shotty.
They definitely couldn't come up with something like Adore.
@englandink I think Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins are only compared because they were two of the most successful alternative rock bands of the 90s.
Nirvana have more punk influences, and the Pumpkins were influenced by prog and arena rock

One of their greatest songs ever! Almost glad it's a b-side. Don't listen to it all to often, and never grow tired of it. So mature and yet so sweet!
