Perhaps Motor Trend should not do a Truck of the Year test but rather a Truck of the Current Era comparison (e.g. compare trucks at the point where they are "all new" to the market in a specific class - like they did for 2011). This way, it is a comparison of apples to apples. However, as much as I don't like what they did here, they do acknowledge that "it's not a comparison test" but rather a test of each truck according to specific criteria done on a independent basis.

(ie 2007 chevy won truck of year for new style truck, 2009 f150 won cuz they had new styling, 2012 ford got new styling and won again....if you compared all 1/2 truck it's still not a comparission. Each company have different points that they do well. Toyota and Nissan do NOT make a 1/2 truck they are jap junk and an embarsment to the truck world.

@TradeMark2003 it's hard to imagine the current-generation half-ton Silverado and Sierra would win against the current-generation F-150 which is more than one generation ahead in terms of design, technology, capabilty, and quality. In short, the F-150 is current while the GM product is, by comparison, quite dated (though it is a great truck!). GM is introducing it's an all-new half-ton next year (2014 model year) and a comparison will be conducted then (e.g. where a win can go either way).
Dodge shoulda won. Anyone can turbo charge 3.5L and get good performance, but nothing beats a cummins. Especially the high output version. 800lb-ft baby

mate, it is VW's first attempt to make truck. good engine, but they couldnt get the chassis and suspension right. bare in mind, ford, chevy and dodge have probably over half a century of experience making truck.

Chevy trucks haven't really changed over the last few years so even if they had it, it would fail miserably. And the van is a commercial truck that is meant to haul loads, so yes, it compares.

This CLEARLY demonstrates that these trucks are NOT being compared to each other, but to their own numbers. Certain trucks weren't in this test because they have not changed. Ford lived up to it's expectations, Ford has had the best-selling trucks for the past 34 years and counting, FORD MAKES THE BEST PICKUP TRUCKS! STOP CRYING AND ACCEPT IT!

They put a small truck (tacoma) against 2 big trucks (Ford & Dodge) screw the Nissan not even a truck but anyway if they put in a Toyota Tundra there would've been 3 big trucks to make the competition a little bit more fair
I hate the way Motor Trend does there whatever of the year. Who's to say the Chevy 1500 or the Dodge 1500 isn't still better than the redesigned F-150 which can hardly be considered redesigned. Its just a joke there is no real education learned here as to which vehicle a potential customer should highly consider. If I went out and bought a new Ford F-150 based off this and to then ride in a buddies Silverado only to find out its way better than my new Ford I would be awfully dissapointed.

I'm not a Ford guy, but out of this field the Ford is really the only contender. On the tests that Motor Trend puts their Truck Of The Year contestants through, any full size half ton will come out the winner. The handling isn't great but its better than a 3/4 ton with better fuel economy and it's obviously going to tow better than Tacoma. The F-150 simply wins by default.

@chevystud88 That's more of a specialty/performance truck. It's not really intended for any more than pulling a small trailer or putting your occasional TV in the bed, but it sure is fast.
The EcoBoost was designed simply as a powerful and fuel efficient engine for use in a full sized truck, for full sized towing and hauling, and not so much for drag racing.

For not being a comparison, there was a lot of comparing going on in the discussion. I've always viewed MotorTrend as a consumer mag, not something to compare commercial vehicles, so don't include commercial vans with consumer trucks. Which TRUCK pushes the bar? That is easily the F-150 due to the engine. This isn't a surprise, as there is nothing new from any other consumer truck maker. Most surprising is MT even did TOTY for 2012, although it wouldn't be a competition if only Ford was in it
Must say disapointed with the line up, how does the ford f150 qualify as a new model and the ram 3500, but the ram 1500 is not, the eco boost has been out for a while and sounds like a washing machine, and you never see a comparison on price, you can toe double the payload with a standard ram 3500 at the same price as an eco boost pluss you have a 300,000 mile plus deisel, compared to a new unproven turbo v6

Which means comparing prices are irrelevant. Also, they never said that the F-150 was a new model. They said that the trucks in this video were either new OR "significantly revised". The F-150 has upgraded interiors as well as engines. So the F-150 was considered "significantly revised" due to those changes.

@TradeMark2003 it's hard to imagine the current-generation half-ton Silverado and Sierra would win against the current-generation F-150 which is more than one generation ahead in terms of design, technology, capabilty, and quality. In short, the F-150 is current while the GM product is, by comparison, quite dated (though it is a great truck!). GM is introducing it's an all-new half-ton next year (2014 model year) and a comparison will be conducted then (e.g. where a win can go either way).

Chevy trucks haven't really changed over the last few years so even if they had it, it would fail miserably. And the van is a commercial truck that is meant to haul loads, so yes, it compares.

This CLEARLY demonstrates that these trucks are NOT being compared to each other, but to their own numbers. Certain trucks weren't in this test because they have not changed. I hate the way Motor Trend does there whatever of the year. Who's to say the Chevy 1500 or the Dodge 1500 isn't still better than the redesigned F-150 which can hardly be considered redesigned. Its just a joke there is no real education learned here as to which vehicle a potential customer should highly consider. If I went out and bought a new Ford F-150 based off this and to then ride in a buddies Silverado only to find out its way better than my new Ford I would be awfully dissapointed.

I'm not a Ford guy, but out of this field the Ford is really the only contender. On the tests that Motor Trend puts their Truck Of The Year contestants through, any full size half ton will come out the winner. The handling isn't great but its better than a 3/4 ton with better fuel economy and it's obviously going to tow better than Tacoma. The F-150 simply wins by default.

@chevystud88 That's more of a specialty/performance truck. It's not really intended for any more than pulling a small trailer or putting your occasional TV in the bed, but it sure is fast.
The EcoBoost was designed simply as a powerful and fuel efficient engine for use in a full sized truck, for full sized towing and hauling, and not so much for drag racing.

For not being a comparison, there was a lot of comparing going on in the discussion. I've always viewed MotorTrend as a consumer mag, not something to compare commercial vehicles, so don't include commercial vans with consumer trucks. Which TRUCK pushes the bar? That is easily the F-150 due to the engine. This isn't a surprise, as there is nothing new from any other consumer truck maker. Most surprising is MT even did TOTY for 2012, although it wouldn't be a competition if only Ford was in it

Must say disapointed with the line up, how does the ford f150 qualify as a new model and the ram 3500, but the ram 1500 is not, the eco boost has been out for a while and sounds like a washing machine, and you never see a comparison on price, you can toe double the payload with a standard ram 3500 at the same price as an eco boost pluss you have a 300,000 mile plus deisel, compared to a new unproven turbo v6

@grimvamp04 You haven't been listening. One of the first things they said in the video was that this was not a comparison test, but testing against a certain criteria. Which means comparing prices are irrelevant. Also, they never said that the F-150 was a new model. They said that the trucks in this video were either new OR "significantly revised". The F-150 has upgraded interiors as well as engines. So the F-150 was considered "significantly revised" due to those changes.
