Actually it is quite real - you can google "whippet myostatin" and you'll find it. Myostatin is a hormone that cuts off muscle production, and myostatin deficiency is known to occur relatively commonly in whippet terriers and belgian blue bulls. There have been a few documented cases in humans as well.

In the wild this would be an issue because less fat is stored, but a well-fed animal has few side effects besides incredible muscle mass.
