Let the haters hate... What they do not understand is their favorite band has been influenced by KISS one way or another. When a group can last 40 years they have done something right!!!
Bruce Kulick was the perfect guitarist for this version of KISS, but I just don't think the makeup era- musically or visually- is his style. I would love to see KISS reunite for a few non makeup shows during a tour and bring back Bruce, but Tommy Thayer belongs in the makeup.
This came out when I was 13...I always said if I have a daughter, her name would be Shandi...14 years later, I got my little girl!!!...Ihave always been a big fan of KISS and always will be!!!
I sooooooo love this version. I still wish that they would have brought bruce back into the band instead of tommy. Tommy is great but bruce in my mind will forever be far more superiour than tommy
Bruce is better and all know it, but Paul and Gene brought in the one that has more experiance in wearing the makeup and Tommy does, as he was in a KISS Tribute back prior so. That is it.
Tommy has a better singing voice than Bruce has, other than that, Bruce's guitar work is better by far.
In some of Kiss' videos, Gene has "plucked' his bass. Check out Tears Are Falling" and I think "Thrills In The Night" and pretty sure about "I Love It Loud". But those are just videos; in concerts he'll use picks.
The only trouble with Kiss is, when they substite Ace & Peter, it just is not Kiss anymore. When the original lineup is there, the right sound is there. Paul & Gene are not Kiss alone.
Some of you guys might disagree here. But in this video,it seems like Paul just isn't feeling it.I know its live & the sound will suffer some. But it sounds no where near as good as the 1980 version.
lol probably.. And Australia in '80 sounded nothing like the original anyways, this may have been around the first time period where they actually played it this way at all.
Some bands have such great chemistry. They play to win. They never had the typical lead singer who self absorbs nor the drug problems and the drama. They seem to play hard, connect to audiences, take it seriously and make music. They appear to want each song to mean something. They also have some cool quirks and tricks that are cliche but necessary. Rock on.
When unmasked was released I was in the Army, we were in Oklahoma city on a kinda "goodwill visit", some American soldiers came to England and we went out there.
I remember buying the U.S. version of unmasked from a record shop out there, I also got the 4 solo albums all on picture disc.
the version from 'dinasty tour' (check the sidney shows) are faster than the others...i didnt like it...this 1995 its kinda crappy too...but it was following the 90's wave. The best live version is the Alive 4....but nothing like the original version.
Yea, unmasked was an awesome album.... It had a Kiss-ness to it but had a flair of something else. Carnival of souls was pure garbage, couldn't even pick 1 song that sounded like good old Kiss.
Your Wrong. Unmasked is a great album. Someone said that fans from the begaining don't love these songs. Wrong again Kiss fan since 1977 I love it all and always will. You can't tell me that if Kiss did "What Makes the World Go Around"or "I" You wouldn't Love it Give me a break. They could do anything obscue and fan would be greatful. Look at "All American Man" for the last preformances it was voted to be played on there site. If they would give fans a chance to pick songs what would you pick?
UnMasked is without question my favorite Kiss album. People complain about it not being as heavy as earlier albums, but who cares? What about all the fantastic songs? They are SO well-written and great!!
Hey tjcobra666, you should listen to Destroyer and Dressed to Kill. Next to Alive 1, Those were the best 2 albums they ever released. Hands down, along with Alive 1, those 2 albums define Kiss.
Trust me, I've got all the Kiss albums, and have listened to them a million times. I love everything except Carnival of souls, which is a complete piece of crap. And I'm usually into heavy stuff, but UnMasked is still my favorite Kiss album. It's got the songs, man. The wonderful sweet songs. And it's not as pop-ish as people claim.
Yes, there are some great songs on Unmasked... it's a highly underated album, you're right. I also agree about Carnival of souls... it was a disappointment.
funny thing is that when these type of songs were made everyone was like WTF ? why is KISS doing this shit ... NOW its like why ISNT KISS performing this shit ... alot of the low rated songs have now become gems for fans ... there people out there that had a petition wanting kiss to perform the entire elder album and it never wetn gold .... amazing
I always thought that KISS wasted a golden opportunity by not performing 'The Elder' in its entirety with the symphony in Australia. That would have been incredible.
@Lovgun7 Yeah, really. I've been a Kiss fan like, forever and I can honestly say that I dig everything they did up till "Hot in the Shade." That's when I was really dissapointed in them (aside from Peter's solo album). Kiss had a great run of a lot of great albums. Ok, maybe this isn't thier best tune but it ain't bad.
Non-open minded people didn't like Dynasty,Unmasked and The Elder as an open minded guy (I listen to Chuck Berry,Elvis Presley,Pink Floyd,KISS (Favourite band), Metallica,Megadeth,Exodus so...) it was easy to like it.
i think I Was Made For Loving you at first killed dynasty ... but when u listen to the album it has alot of good "KISS" style songs .... Sure Know Something, Magic Touch, Hard Time... i always loved I was Made For Loving You from the Alive 3 album
I really don't think many KISS fans hate this song. Its probably those that started with them in the beginning. In fact, I got into KISS in 1980 when they released this album and I soon discovered all the other songs and hey, its been 29 years since then. I'm form Singapore and I have travelled to New York and the Gold Coast to see them play live.

It's also acoustic, and it's hard to capture the same dynamic.
Plus, Paul might have been concentrating really hard to remember this entire song. LOL
At this point, I don't think they played Shandi much, if at all - since they first did Australia in '80.

I agree 100% Kiss fan since 1976. Shandi alone is worth the price of buying Unmasked. A few other good ones on there as well.
I was at the Nashville Convention Tour in '95 and everyone there was about weeping with joy when they pulled out some of these lesser known gems.

Carnival of souls was Kiss attempting grunge because they'd run out of ideas.
Then the make up/reformation happened, again because they'd run out of ideas.
This song should have been sung by Barry Manillow.
