No kidding???? I thought Steve Kindler was just padding his resume when he talked about all the serious cats he played with when he was just a pup. Steve, you play a lot better now, but is there any chance we could hire your old band for a session? Those guys smoke!!!! ;)
FOUND THIS IN A JUNK SHOP IN LONDON ALONG WITH THE DREAMS ALBUM BILHAM COBLY AND DOWN THE ROAD INTRODUCING THE ELEVENTH HOUSE WITH LARRY CORYELL WHICH I BOUGHT COS' IT WAS AT THE SAME ISH TIME OF VISIONS OF THE EMERALD BEYOND WHICH I HAD TO HAVE AFTER HEARING VITAL TRANSFORMATION ON INNER MOUNTING FLAME ALL INSPIRED BY MY LOVE OF DJANGO AND CONTEMPORARIES SUCH THE ROSENBURG TRIO AND MY APPRECIATION OF THE FLUID TIGHTNESS ALMOST ORGASMIC ON MAGICAL DOG, OFF;- OH YEAH! AND THE GREAT BUCKETHEAD I4.
Jan was always an "also-ran" to me (Herbie and Chick = my gods)...
HOWEVER...
He pitched an absolute PERFECT game on this album. I had to buy second copies of this, Romantic Warrior and Octopus (plus extra needles) 'cause I played them to white noise.
To those who might be simply stumbling across this vid, please know that some of us think this is among the best music every created.
@MrNicespaces Damn..LOL....thats a hard one...I know Im gonna miss one of em..but here goes.
1. "Roxy and Elsewhere"/ Frank Zappa
2. "Romantic Warrior"/ RTF
3. "1978" by Area ( a brilliant Italian fusion band)
4. Birds of Fire/ Mahavishnu Orch.
5. Fusion 3/ Michal Urbaniak
6. Product - Brand X
honorable mentions;
Henry Cow, George Duke, Bill Buford, National Health, Weather Report, Jean Luc Ponty (the early works), Dixie Dregs....I could go on, but im running outta space....LOL
Extraterrestrials land in your back yard. Our 2 species go on to enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship for the rest of time. Your grandkids don't think twice about the existence of ET's but to you that landing will always be a HOLY F! moment.
Fusion/ProgRock/ArtRock from the mid-’60’s to the late ‘70’s was filled with HOLY F! revelations. You woulda loved living through it.
@MrNicespaces ..yea, MrNice...my uncle used to blast Fusion n Jazz when I was little...I rediscovered these tunes on the advent of the Internet.....just hearing them again was a "HOLY F! moment.
Aliens? Trust me, we were the weirdest Black family on the block...no one understood the music....LOL
I was a gigging musician in LA in the '70's with both feet firmly planted in Jazz & Fusion & ProgRock-- I can't believe I never even heard of Area! Thank you.
Maybe I can return the favor? If you never dialed in David Sancious, try him. He was my call for most undervalued fusion artist of the '70's.
Pick up the phone and give my regards to your uncle. I wonder if I know him?
@MrNicespaces ..Ok i remember David Sancious....he had a gold-colored album with a sunset on it I think....keyboard player w/Cobham, David Sanborn and I think Santana....he was a monster.
Can you post any stuff by Sancious?
Well my uncle Harvey has gone to the Great Beyond....but I still remember what he taught me. "Good music is not always in 4/4....lol
Yer just a stinkin' monster. You're remembering "David Sancious & Tone -- Transfomation (the speed of love)!"
I finally popped for a cheap LP/USB setup, but when I DO get time I'll be working up from my most rare and obscure recordings. YT has enough Sancious to keep you busy for now (and you'll see the art you're thinking of).
You know that now that your unc is gone, it's on you to pass on some of the humanity he gave to you, right?
@MrNicespaces YEP..that was it MrNice....i used to sit on the floor, lookin and reading the album covers, balling my fist up....and wondering .."Why doesnt anyone listen to this phenomenal music?....i think it was all about disco, or something back then....but I railed against the injustice....LOL
From when it first came out,it was the best fusion with jan,and it is still top notch!I gave that vinyl a lot of turn back in the day,Be good if he and others could come back like then,WOW
IMHO - BEST synthesizer playing EVER. Not only was the synth sound good, but Jan's playing is just perfect for lead synths; perhaps his Czech roots made him perfect for the multi time-signature style that stamps this record,
On this particular tune - the 'trading fours' section between Kindler and Hammer is among the best I've ever heard ANYWHERE.
BTW - I think Kindler is a SMOKING violinist, possibly better than even Jerry Goodman!)
I would like to reach this level of playing music, these guys play fusion very foxy. I wonder whi Jan Hammer continued with a totally different stile, what is also good, but not too hard to give birth
Tony Smith is the baddest drummer I've ever seen in person. Oh Yeah? is one great album. Nobody plays Fusion this ballsy anymore without some shredder jackass mucking it up.
This is absolutely insane !!!! Is there anything hotter and tighter than these guys on this tune ? Jan just rips this solo, and the groove is a living, breathing entity of its' own !!! If I remember correctly, 'Keyboard' magazine actually transcribed Jan's solo from this for an issue !!! How do you transcribe pure energy ????? Thanks for the post ! Peace :)
There are no videos , but you can hear a great live version of this tune by the Jan Hammer Group . Go to web site Jazzfusion(dot)tv , scroll down the list of audio bootlegs to find listing -JEFF BECK JAN HAMMER -1976-06-17 SEATTLE WA. The concert starts with Magic Dog , stream or down load for free.
You are the magnificent! This is a masterpiece of a great song in 11 time signature.I first heard this LP in the mid seventies and it's still ahead of its time.
I found this cd thru Amazon and bought several for my musical dogs for Xmas and they couldn't believe it was on cd-they all said "Oh Yeah" before they left. Thanks for posting this "Magical Gem" of a song. You Ruuule musicminor25-Thanks!!

love that hell-bent-for-election drumming pace at whatever polyrythmic time scheme this song is using - like a headlong gallop over rough ground -

So now you've got me really curious -- what are your top 5 (or so)?
This and Romantic Warrior are my top 2.
