@cwcalderon Our country has a democracy that has been ruined by money and a failed media system and a lot of other stuff. And for the last decade or so, prior to Obama-Biden, we were run by a bunch of thug neoconservatives. I have no illusions about this. But Russia has never had a democracy. For example, Putin just announced that he will be president again, so therefore it just gets to happen. I'm not rooting for either side's team, which makes me different from RT, which is raw propaganda.
Actually Putin had the balls to run the gangsters and swindlers out of the country. Some of the oligarchs that thrived in Russia's [more recent] darkest hour are now in jail... he is not perfect but i admire Putin for bringing the rule of law to his country and pride to Russians. He is not the one bombing and invading several countries at once!!
Putin wiped out 1/10 of the Pre-war population of Chechnya.. that's not as many as died in Iraq of course, but in terms of propotionality - that's Genocide unlike anything the Bush/Obama regime has ever seen..
Also, many tens of thousands of Russia's Middle-class are desperate to leave the Country because of the corruption, Russian Universitites are having to teach TO the corruption.. Putin's Oligarch Abramovich is the World's 54th most powerful Billionare, hardly a coincidence.
It's indisputable fact that Russia has been better off since Putin came to power. That's why he is still very popular with the majority of Russians-- they love him for what he's done for their nation not because they are forced to.
It's just like how the West spins Hitler's popularity in pre-WW2 Germany... they say the adoration was only out of fear. That is patently untrue; Hitler was admired for promptly reversing Germany's fortunes. The Tussians feared Stalin more than Germans feared Hitler.
As nice as all of that sounds - you didn't address a single thing I said, namely my assertion that he is an Oligarch and a War Criminal + whose way of leading has very strangely indeed made people near the top of State a LOT richer..
It mostly just goes to show your reflexive bias against anything or anybody when/if even the most remote comparison is made to Hitler. This knee-jerk reaction may be understandable, but is often used disingenuously to limit open discussion or stifle a fair, honest debate .
How Putin will be remembered in world history ultimately depends on the end result of the WW3 global chessboard. If Russia prevails against US imperialism, he is a hero. If not, he'll be another Hitler.
Chomsky is an important critic, but RT is literally a propaganda outlet owned and funded by the Russian government. They're not interested in human rights or democracy or electoral reform or anything like that. If they were, Russia might have a democracy, instead of being run by gangsters and thugs and ex-KGB goons. Chomsky should know better than to appear on this channel--there are plenty of outlets that would allow his opinions to be aired, independent of the Russian government.
RT is Russian propaganda, that's sure. But the fact that we are watching Chomsky on RT here is great, isn't it? He had two highly popular editorials on Al Jazeera (much more serious!) and truthout for example.
@dihydrohydroxycodein Fair enough. I just think that the same people who listen to Chomsky and support independent media should, for the same reasons, boycott RT. Chomsky can always show up, as he has in the past, on Democracy Now!, or even in the mainstream on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher (watch Andrew Sullivan blow a gasket after listening to Chomsky on foreign policy). RT's mission is to make Russia look good and America look bad. I don't want to just slam America--I want to improve it.
@calvinklein457 in your opinion what country has or ever had an actual democracy? years of giving thought to it has led me to consider strongly that "democracy" as a social/political theory is an illusion, a phantom. it can never really be implemented. i see what is ostensible democracy but not actual democracy.
@MisterBouncyBounce It's no phantom. The models for representational democracy in modern nations are fine. But a single vote means nothing - people must organise into lobbying groups with shared views on issues that affect their lives. The block vote - it's the only defence against big business election funding and anti-democratic, unjust policies. Democracy is a movement. If people are not political and organised, but just governed, then by definition they do not have a democracy.
@NZDuriahheap Agreed. Paul is the only candidate who hasn't been bought, i'm ashamed to have voted for Obama in '08 (although I was barely old enough to vote at the time). I don't agree with all of Ron Paul's views but he is literally the ONLY choice that makes ANY logical sense. Not to mention a 100% constitutional voting record and ending the FED. Rick Perry, Obama, Bachman what a joke.
@Bouchon211 "barely old enough to vote at the time". you are perhaps an example of relative youth with availability of information outside of mass(/Zionist?)-media. i am from New Zealand and have watched from pre Bush senior/Kuwait, those CLINTon idiots, Bush junior/911/Iraq/Afghan... the first bailout, and now Obama/2nd bailout/same wars continuing... it's disgraceful and the selfishness/ignorance of the U.S. public has always been disheartening. i hope you and the likes are the sane future
These guys are a bunch of phony assholes. All their videos are just edited conversations of famous figures with their "journalists" spliced in. They have a video in which they interview president of iranian president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, and they give him an english translator (so they can put WHATEVER words in his mouth they want to.) and in this video Ahmedinejad says essentially that all humans deserve rights, and that everyone is equal. This goes against nearly everything Mahmoud's ever said
@Ronaldreaganspotatos Are you a joke? You can understand that there is a contradiction between what CNN tells you and what the guy actually says, and you do not suspect that CNN is a part of a propaganda machine. Rather than doing that you assume that translators are pro-Ahmedinejad for some reason. Oh I know the reason. Because they are EVIL
you gentiles are Pathetic Always take some jew and make him god or Messiah just like the jesus and kerl marx and know this noam chomsky did you ever wondering why is this all your biggst gods and messiah and your intellectuals from right and left are jewish and you wonder how we the jews call are self the chosen people dont diss this
comment in 100 yreas from know your kids will things that holly histroy just like your Fathers Though't even the arebs belive in a jewish idea of god
We need a populist version of Chompsky to lead us. Noam is too easily discounted as a 'head in the clouds' liberal thinker, even if he's proven right again and again and again.
@flyinggimpproduction Actually it's kinda sad that most intellectuals are like this. Their visions are very very accurate and correct. Their recommendations make a lot of sense. But they are not popular. They are, well, university professors mostly. And professors are very very left leaning.
It's extremely sad that the likes of Glenn Beck or O'Riley are instead. Their visions totally wrong, their predictions way off.
Another problem: intellectuals dislike entering politics. We're fucked.
@flyinggimpproduction If we have a different version of chomsky, we're simply dealing with a hack, can we really use another hack? If people can discredit Chomsky so easily as you suggest, how is a "more populist version" not going to be considerably easier to discredit? Chomsky was about as good as we could ask for and no one is paying attention. What's worse is that when he dies that's it for the champions of moral logic.
@flyinggimpproduction Is Noam 'liberal?' I mean, he has beliefs similar to libs but he's on the anarchist spectrum, not the political left or right. Is he still Liberal? I don't get it?
@flyinggimpproduction he's not a liberal, he's an anarchist. besides, he's very down to earth he talks to everyday people about everyday organizing and he would never want to lead anyone...anarchists don't lead people they want the people to lead themselves.
chomsky is so old and has so much knowledge. His books are like a stepping stone for younger people to get an even better depth of knowledge, moving humanity forwards, closer to the truth.
I think Obama might be worse than Bush-- in that uninformed left-leaning voters who might otherwise be more politically active have become neutralized and complacent. Especially anti-war black people who take an ignorant satisfaction with Obama's being in the White House almost solely because of his skin color.
I can't tell you how many black folks i've talked to assume our foreign policy is much better off under Obama than Bush. They are inclined to trust a black president, fraud or not.
@bobshenix You are 100% right. I said that from the getgo, that the anti-war left which was HUGE and ANGRY, will suddenly EVAPORATE overnight when Obama is elected. I was right.
But the Left wing has never been "naturally" anti-war. The right-wing is the naturally anti-war party as they are opposed to ideological or humanitarian intervention (keep the money at home). The problem is they too are uninformed former Bush voters who can't quite come to terms with how the wars bankrupt America.
@denullifier If "using big words" is the benchmark for quasi-intellectualism, then you must be hanging by your fingernails on the lower rung. Chompsky has done more research in an afternoon than you've done in a lifetime, as evidenced by your ignorant remarks. Good day.
chompsky president. Damn you people are idiots. he is a tool of the zionists. He is just there to keep you fools in line on the big issues to call someone KEY brainwashing terms like, conspiracy theorist. This man is a lowlife bastard.
@sssssjjjj1 what are you on about? Just because he is from a jewish family, and maybe a jew himself, doesn't mean he is a zionist. He speaks against Israel, and supports the Palestinians. also whats up with that username, dbz or sumin?
@denullifier "He just can't know what's really at stake, or what's really corrupt. He is mostly guessing and finger-pointing."
Expert analysis of Professer Chomsky, the most cited author and political analyst alive, author of over 100 books, first book published in 1939, avid reader of collosal capacity, by an arrogant little YouTube chump. I wonder who folks should take more seriously, you or Chomsky? PMSL. Dream on fuckwit.
Thanks to the net & youtube, Americans are slowly realizing that our president is merely a puppet installed to give the voters the illusion that they have some say in their national policies.
@stephenabm Exactly. What did he say he would do the very first thing if he got into office? Pull the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan. What did he do first thing? He added 30,000 more. Umm...I haven't done so well in math class, but even I know that 100,000 plus 30,000 doesn't equal 0. To think I thought "change" would be good. Hell, it never even showed up.
@stephenabm I think his idea of what presidency would be like was different from what it turned out to be. Obama is a hand's-on type of person. If there is something he can do directly, he will do it in every single way. But he's trying to run a country, and there are ways to get around The President of the United States, as well as blocking his ideas and keeping them from being accepted as law. I think his in particular must have been blocked for the most part.
On Tuesday 11 September 2001, W.T.C. 7 (although it was hit by no plane) collapsed, @ free-fall speed, 20 minutes AFTER the B.B.C. announced its demise. Some conspiracy theorists claim that 19 Arabs, who appear on no passenger-lists, crashed jumbo jets into 3 landmark buildings at 580 M.P.H. Of course that speed exceeds design & structural tolerances for air buses at elevations below 1,000 feet as the drag rips them apart.
@ZombieLincoln666 Thank you for pointing out the obvious to him/her. What do they think the US is a free country? We aren't Australia, but at least we have our guns still, poor Aussies.
@zprodigy I disagree with your contention that libertarians are as good as neocons. I think they can be a powerful force for good, but fox and the tea party are standing in the way of that.
Obama is similar to Clinton; but the corporate grip has gotten tighter. Also the left is pretty much gone, replaced libertarians who are basically the same as neocons, sans the statist agenda and religious fanaticism. They think they're replacing a corrupt government, but they're doing away with a puppet government and removing any pretense of who controls things. The elites will then help establish a christian theocracy, full of crazies who will willingly bolster the coming dictatorship.
@zprodigy Agreed. Frankly people who claim to Libertarians get under my fuckin skin. They just act like neocons and claim to be about the constitution. What bullshit.
The fact is that the people who hold the political strings are never involved in the actual fighting. To quote the words of the Jew Henry Kissinger; it is the “dumb stupid animals” that do the fighting. And in regards to the logic…well you have to understand what the end objectives are.
maybe missiles and nuclear weapons are unpopular in socialist MA where they want to hold hands with the terrorists and sing we are the world with them. But violence is the only thing that is going to save us from those primitive animals.
@Mxpx856 Wake up from the programing. What you are saying makes no sense. You have been deeply missled by governmental propaganda. The US has killed many many more times then any arab "terrorist" could ever imagine. In fact your government have supported and financed more terrorist organizations then you could name from memory, in latin america alone. The world hates you because you are seen as the main evil in the world. Not because we "hate your freedom". Because of your criminal actions
Er.....correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Chomsky urge everyone who would listen to vote Obama in the first place? And its not as if Obama's record was unknown, Ralph Nader regularly pointed out, based on his record, that he would be no different to Bush.
@MaxTallon True, but I believe he was urging people to vote for Obama in the Swing States. Whereas voters in solid states, like Chomsky's Massachusetts, he urged people to vote for real change candidates like Nader. Whether or not Obama is better or worse than McCain would have been, it's very hard to say.
@S1Nicator : Hi, thanks for reply. I fully understand why he urged this, but the problem with that (and it has since come to pass) is this: there are over 2,000 fulltime corporate lobbyists in Washington: as the years go by they invest more and more into both Democrat & Republican until they have equal influence over both. Obama collected far more corporate money than McCain for his campaign, I think it was twice as much. You can now see this reflected in his adopted policies.
Dr. Chomsky recently told Iranian TV that at the time the USA attacked Afghanistan they had no evidence that al Qaeda did 9/11. See my video "Chomsky on Faith-based Wars and 9/11"
That is true.. There is no evidence that Bin Laden is behind 9/11 and Cheney even admiited that they never cliamed that Al Qaeda or Bin laden was behind them but they have teh fake CIA tapes..
Capitalism is the wage slavery of immense humanity in a politically manipulated MARKET SYSTEM OF ARTIFICIAL SCARCITY ,a tyrannical, destructive system to perpetuate poverty and exploitation in the interest of the ruling class. Capitalism from its mercantile plundering and enslavement of African natives to its Millitaristic rise of European Powers to World wars and Financial serfdom of the world has been a DISASTEROUS imposition. We need to Share the Earth in COOPERATION FOR OUR COMMON NEEDS
chomsky videos are always amazing because the sheer intellectual gulf between the content of the videos and the comments underneath them is staggering
Indians are even Involved in this, They want to eliminate all white population...Many Indian Doctors are giving wrong medicines so that the babies will eventually die.
DO YOU KNOW PEOPLE---THE BEST SELLER BOOK INDIA IS --MEIN KEMPF..yes they have cultural hatred towards WHITE..
@Lamboragon - Newsflash: All the so-called socialist countries with single payer or universal health care/insurance have private/independent doctors AND private insurance "competing" with public; it's nothing new. The bigger problem is a doctor shortage (around the world), not public health insurance. No system is perfect, but I love the Japanese system. Everyone here has affordable insurance and great care (1/3 the cost in the US and more humane care). Never want to use the US system again.
There's hope. At least two Americans can/could think straight: Noam Chomsky and Chalmers Johnson. Unfortunately Johnson is dead now, which is a real pity.
And you are correct. I like Obama and I like Chomsky. Chomsky makes you think. Therefore you now know that it does not matter which President, Party is in office.
I like Obama because he still has that innocence, that is quickly hardening though by his very real de-briefing by the CIA his first day in office.!!All governments keep secrets, if you recall August of 2008, President Obama said "we should go into Pakistan" but wait..he found out..no what he thought was the problem was not really
@macdelight - I'm not clear on what you wrote. One of the few campaign "promises" Obama followed through on was going into Pakistan - although the action there could very well be autonomous by the CIA, but as prez, Obama is still responsible for it. The CIA briefs both party candidates before one of them is elected. So it's likely Obama was just saying what the CIA wanted to do, and they have certainly done it since he took office.
I can't wait until the US goes to hell in a basket case, the world will finally be rid of their $h!t; you guys can go take your culture and shove it in a place that has zero risk of skin cancer.
@albedoshader I don't think he would accept the offer, but I think she should offer it as a matter of basic courtesy to the the Noamster. It should be offered to him at the beginning of every interview :)
@tstruss912<---- Once again, our homeless communist troll posts his homosexual/liberal talking points from his local public library, all while shoving his Noam Chomsky dildos up his ass in front of little children. The local police have already registered this assclown as a pediophile!
If Chomsky was a frequent guest on all the mainstream media outlets public opinion would change dramatically, and RalphNader, Dennis Kucinich or Ron Paul would probably be our head of state now! we might not reach utopia but we sure as hell would be closer than we are now if Chomsky started to be heavily endorsed
@airfalcon I never said crap about chomsky endorsing Ron Paul I am pretty sure he would not because Chomsky does not believe in free-market fundementalism. But on his ideas towards U.S imperailism and this corrupt war, politicians like Ron Paul have similiar views thus Chomsky would comment on these issues and the politicians that I have named would stand for them but instead we are all forced to choose between a two party system and candidates that dont really stand for any kind of reform!
All good, it just came across as if you were saying chomsky would support Paul. You're american election system is another reason why I'm glad I live elsewhere. Proportional representation!
@Loltochapel "If Chomsky was a frequent guest on all the mainstream media outlets"
To use Chomskian phraseology, you will never see Chomsky on mainstream TV or in the mainstream press, and there is a very good reason for that. An informed public is a danger to the profits of the rich elite, and that will not be tolerated.
@TheGodlessGuitarist ....depends what you mean by mainstream. Cuz he was on Real Time with Bill Maher. And I wouldn't be suprised to hear he was on the Daily Show
Yeah, you're right, but not the news. It's interesting that the Daily Show is now being seen in the US as more reliable as a news source than Fox! Awesome :D
Why the fuck would you want Ron Paul? Ron Paul is just republicanism on steroids: the furthest right wing you can possibly get. Chomsky wouldnt endorse Ron Paul
@GnomesAmok You are the last resposnse I am going to do because I am tired of explaining a very simple fucking comment to morons who constantly misunderstood what I wrote.1st I never said he would directly or indirectly endorse Ron Paul. 2nd Ron Paul and Noam Chomsky obviously do not share similiar economic perspectives but they both share anti-war and anti-imperialist notions and Ron Paul is one of the only men on the right who holds these views on foriegn policy therefore lets face it America
@GnomesAmok America is not a Left-wing country. The majority of the electorate leans right of center or center-right. So an Anti-war Candidate on the right like Ron paul has higher chances of being elected then a anti-war Liberal
@Loltochapel .true america is a generally conservative country but i dont now what spectrum youre using to judge.America is far right to the centre compared to most other countries in the developed world.
@GnomesAmok Ron Paul is a libertarian, not a neoliberal. The reason the media hates him so much is entirely a result of the propaganda model. Full-throttle free-market capitalism hurts big business comparatively, it's the reason we currently live in a "Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor" society., as without this system of "crony capitalism", financial institutions and health care conglomerates have to be accountable. This costs businesses, so they don't like this.
@Loltochapel I am not sure Rep.Paul and Prof. Chomsky would have too much in common on economic issues but would share similar libertarian values on social matters. I believe Chomsky endorses socialism as an extension of the democratic process ie the shared ownership of the means of production. I think Paul very much endorses individualism in matters of property (the owner of the means of production included) so logically the two would be opposed. In essence you are correct, though!
I lean to the left on many things but i personally believe the time has come to put the left-right paradigm aside. I might not agree with everything Ron Paul says, but he is CLEARLY the only politician who is dead-set on dismantling the corrupt establishment that perpetuates "politics as usual" in America.
It's looking more and more like Dr. Paul has a chance, and things can only get better if we get someone in there to root our the rampant cronyism and put the Fed in its place.
@bobshenix And its people like you who are willing to put aside policy differences and vote for a candidate on his principled integrity and honesty that make it highly possible. Have you registered Republican?
Not yet but i plan on it. I think it will be more difficult for Ron Paul to win the Republican primary that it will be to beat Obama should he get the nomination. So i will definitely do that thanks for the reminder.
@bobshenix I just cant stand behind Ron Paul, idk. I just can't stand his simplistic black-and-white capitalism=good socialism=bad mentality, even if he seems incredibly genuine. Im also fucking disgusted with some of his religious policies, he seems to toy with the idea of a Christian-based nation with prayer schools. Besides, why is everyone so sure being president wouldn't corrupt him immediately? I can tell you from living Chicago my whole life that Obama had some serious integrity long ago
Washington has gotten out of control and must be held accountable for how it spends our money. Obama is a fraud, warmonger like Bush
Wall Street insiders and the big bankers actually benefit from gov't mandates/legislation, then they make risky moves they otherwise wouldn't have without the gov't safety net. They make a killing, then get bailed out with taxpayer dollars when shit hits the fan.
US doesn't have true free-market capitalism, competition is being squeezed by the mega corporations.
@Lamboragon You've defined your terms so that a price determined by the free market cannot count as "gouging." You are living in a fantasy world if you think that price gouging and monopolies do not ever develop in free markets.
@Lamboragon The specific idea about "deep structure" has changed, but the concept that there is an unlearned component to grammar and that, in typical language use, there is an unconscious transformation from the deep grammar of i-language to the learned grammar of e-language are all standard linguistics.
You make claims about the field even though you clearly haven't even taken Linguistics 101, yet you call me a moron. I DO read Krugman, but you don't need a PhD to know what way the wind blows
@Lamboragon Sorry, wrong again. I'll just focus on a couple errors. First, children pick up entire languages without having to be taught directly, whereas intensive, deliberate work with chimpanzees over years still does not yield anything close to the mastery of a language that a 7-year-old has. Chomsky's model of linguistics is called the "standard model" of linguistics. Read "Aspects of the Theory of Syntax." Don't make pronouncements when you have no idea what you are talking about.
@Lamboragon ahhh, there we are, actually that's not necessarily true, 1910 had america with far more industrial stuff than it does now, as well as agrarian stuff, well actually no, sorry, I mean combined total of agrarian and industrial stuff was higher
america is very consumerist in the way it does stuff now, coming up with systems moreso than products, in general... unlike in 1910, so different situation, arbitrarily saying it needs the same thing is bad
@Lamboragon and that's why government steps in, apple doesn't make products, nor does it sell them, it sells an image, most of the devices it has were developed by others 5 years previously, and perfected I might add it's the gullibility of large groups of the population, whether it be a minority or majority matters not, but merely the fact that it has such an impact, that requires a governing body to set limits to treachery and opportunism, some can still exist, but limits must be set on it
@theand123 I wouldn't say snore, I'd just say that he's pitifully uneducated in the realities of the world as they stand amongst life experience and different positions within society, there's a sub-group of people nowadays, akin to the various other historical intellectual movements, that seeks to gain dominance over others, it might happen naturally, but most of the time the movements are just that, movements, they're wrong, they rely on things that are right then extrapolate incorrectly
@theand123 I'm half inclined to sit and watch and just try to make money based on an understanding of what will happen given this sort of zeitgeist thing that inevitably happens every 10-15+ years or so, it's an odd sort of "development" to be honest
@Lamboragon of course, it's artificial in that they can balance the game around it, however people can do that, and the value can shift as opposed to shifting everything else about the situation, with government pricing~
@Lamboragon or perhaps, instead of 70/30 gov't favour, it could be 30/70 in favour of private businesses well, the key is to allow for competition while at the same time providing a guarantee against gouging, I was playing a game where you're perfectly free to sell items to other players for whatever negotiated price, but there's a set lowest price by the game's design with vendor trash (items to sell to NPC's for cash, meh) values added to big items even it's stabilized the economy~
@Lamboragon I don't actually agree with that as much, I think social things while technically transactional aren't well covered by economics yet, if ever, and it's psychology that needs to be put to use along with economics to even get a grasp of the thing
and by then you've basically COVERED politics with those two topics so I just kind of say "hey, cool" government is the backbone, and private enterprise fills in the cracks~
it's obvious that a central and decentralized system work well
@Lamboragon yea, but smith under no uncertain circumstances warns against proliferation of power amongst businesses the government belongs in a free market economy, to prevent anyone from getting a monopoly, according to his views the government is a specific body with a very well rounded, and wide ranging job, it must exist, and it's the best thing for that job, others can be specialists, but the government is what must exist now that we've developed civilization
@Lamboragon in short, marx can go to hell because I don't fall into his world view, and while he comments on phenomenon that I am subject to, he doesn't seem to understand people like me exist, and as such, is missing a big part of the picture~
@Lamboragon and as such, I cannot simply try to put things into a void and say "that is best" a country is a "real" thing that interacts in the real world, well it's a concept, but the borders given are real, and the organizations real, and so forth
economy is the same in that regard, but economies are subject to the government to a degree in every power structure there is so I work with what can change things proactively, not reactively, which already works for a mediocre form of damage ctrl
who is this oldfag and why am i suppose to care? *googles* *facepalms*

RT is Russian propaganda, that's sure. But the fact that we are watching Chomsky on RT here is great, isn't it? He had two highly popular editorials on Al Jazeera (much more serious!) and truthout for example.
dihydrohydroxycodein 3 months ago
@dihydrohydroxycodein Fair enough. I just think that the same people who listen to Chomsky and support independent media should, for the same reasons, boycott RT. Chomsky can always show up, as he has in the past, on Democracy Now!, or even in the mainstream on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher (watch Andrew Sullivan blow a gasket after listening to Chomsky on foreign policy). RT's mission is to make Russia look good and America look bad. I don't want to just slam America--I want to improve it.
calvinklein457 3 months ago
@calvinklein457 in your opinion what country has or ever had an actual democracy? years of giving thought to it has led me to consider strongly that "democracy" as a social/political theory is an illusion, a phantom. it can never really be implemented. i see what is ostensible democracy but not actual democracy.
MisterBouncyBounce 3 months ago

We need a populist version of Chompsky to lead us. Noam is too easily discounted as a 'head in the clouds' liberal thinker, even if he's proven right again and again and again.
flyinggimpproduction 6 months ago 14
@flyinggimpproduction Actually it's kinda sad that most intellectuals are like this. Their visions are very very accurate and correct. Their recommendations make a lot of sense. But they are not popular. They are, well, university professors mostly. And professors are very very left leaning.
It's extremely sad that the likes of Glenn Beck or O'Riley are instead. Their visions totally wrong, their predictions way off.
Another problem: intellectuals dislike entering politics. We're fucked.
ImEternalWanderer 5 months ago
@flyinggimpproduction If we have a different version of chomsky, we're simply dealing with a hack, can we really use another hack? If people can discredit Chomsky so easily as you suggest, how is a "more populist version" not going to be considerably easier to discredit? Chomsky was about as good as we could ask for and no one is paying attention. What's worse is that when he dies that's it for the champions of moral logic.

They are inclined to trust a black president, fraud or not.
bobshenix 7 months ago
@bobshenix You are 100% right. I said that from the getgo, that the anti-war left which was HUGE and ANGRY, will suddenly EVAPORATE overnight when Obama is elected. I was right.
But the Left wing has never been "naturally" anti-war. The right-wing is the naturally anti-war party as they are opposed to ideological or humanitarian intervention (keep the money at home). The problem is they too are uninformed former Bush voters who can't quite come to terms with how the wars bankrupt America.

Er.....correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Chomsky urge everyone who would listen to vote Obama in the first place? And its not as if Obama's record was unknown, Ralph Nader regularly pointed out, based on his record, that he would be no different to Bush.
MaxTallon 1 year ago
@MaxTallon True, but I believe he was urging people to vote for Obama in the Swing States. Whereas voters in solid states, like Chomsky's Massachusetts, he urged people to vote for real change candidates like Nader. Whether or not Obama is better or worse than McCain would have been, it's very hard to say.
Jonathan6561 1 year ago
@MaxTallon. Noam Chomsky said that even though there were only small differences between Obama and Mcain, it would make more sense to vote for Obama.
S1Nicator 1 year ago
@S1Nicator : Hi, thanks for reply. I fully understand why he urged this, but the problem with that (and it has since come to pass) is this: there are over 2,000 fulltime corporate lobbyists in Washington: as the years go by they invest more and more into both Democrat & Republican until they have equal influence over both. Obama collected far more corporate money than McCain for his campaign, I think it was twice as much. You can now see this reflected in his adopted policies.

So it's likely Obama was just saying what the CIA wanted to do, and they have certainly done it since he took office.

laudrup90 7 months ago
@GnomesAmok Ron Paul is a libertarian, not a neoliberal. The reason the media hates him so much is entirely a result of the propaganda model. Full-throttle free-market capitalism hurts big business comparatively, it's the reason we currently live in a "Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor" society., as without this system of "crony capitalism", financial institutions and health care conglomerates have to be accountable. This costs businesses, so they don't like this.
Hayleyfire929 7 months ago
@Hayleyfire929 .ronpaul is ansolute ultra neoliberal in his economic policies fool.
laudrup90 7 months ago
@Loltochapel I am not sure Rep.Paul and Prof. Chomsky would have too much in common on economic issues but would share similar libertarian values on social matters. I believe Chomsky endorses socialism as an extension of the democratic process ie the shared ownership of the means of production. I think Paul very much endorses individualism in matters of property (the owner of the means of production included) so logically the two would be opposed. In essence you are correct, though!

I lean to the left on many things but i personally believe the time has come to put the left-right paradigm aside. It's looking more and more like Dr. Paul has a chance, and things can only get better if we get someone in there to root our the rampant cronyism and put the Fed in its place.

@Lamboragon You've defined your terms so that a price determined by the free market cannot count as "gouging." You are living in a fantasy world if you think that price gouging and monopolies do not ever develop in free markets.
cryptickripke 1 year ago
@Lamboragon The specific idea about "deep structure" has changed, but the concept that there is an unlearned component to grammar and that, in typical language use, there is an unconscious transformation from the deep grammar of i-language to the learned grammar of e-language are all standard linguistics.
You make claims about the field even though you clearly haven't even taken Linguistics 101, yet you call me a moron. I DO read Krugman, but you don't need a PhD to know what way the wind blows
cryptickripke 1 year ago
@Lamboragon Sorry, wrong again. I'll just focus on a couple errors. First, children pick up entire languages without having to be taught directly, whereas intensive, deliberate work with chimpanzees over years still does not yield anything close to the mastery of a language that a 7-year-old has. Chomsky's model of linguistics is called the "standard model" of linguistics. Read "Aspects of the Theory of Syntax." Don't make pronouncements when you have no idea what you are talking about.

it doesnt take an intellect ,to tell us that the powerful are scumbags ,its self evident:)

@Lamboragon
you sound like a 18 year old with an economics textbook by your side.
snore.
theand123 1 year ago
@theand123 I wouldn't say snore, I'd just say that he's pitifully uneducated in the realities of the world as they stand amongst life experience and different positions within society, there's a sub-group of people nowadays, akin to the various other historical intellectual movements, that seeks to gain dominance over others, it might happen naturally, but most of the time the movements are just that, movements, they're wrong, they rely on things that are right then extrapolate incorrectly
noobler9 1 year ago
@theand123 I'm half inclined to sit and watch and just try to make money based on an understanding of what will happen given this sort of zeitgeist thing that inevitably happens every 10-15+ years or so, it's an odd sort of "development" to be honest
noobler9 1 year ago
@Lamboragon not true, it's not CALLED gouging because the norm isn't set, but that doesn't make it any less desirable objectively
noobler9 1 year ago
@Lamboragon of course, it's artificial in that they can balance the game around it, however people can do that, and the value can shift as opposed to shifting everything else about the situation, with government pricing~
noobler9 1 year ago
@Lamboragon or perhaps, instead of 70/30 gov't favour, it could be 30/70 in favour of private businesses well, the key is to allow for competition while at the same time providing a guarantee against gouging, I was playing a game where you're perfectly free to sell items to other players for whatever negotiated price, but there's a set lowest price by the game's design with vendor trash (items to sell to NPC's for cash, meh) values added to big items even it's stabilized the economy~
noobler9 1 year ago
@Lamboragon I don't actually agree with that as much, I think social things while technically transactional aren't well covered by economics yet, if ever, and it's psychology that needs to be put to use along with economics to even get a grasp of the thing
and by then you've basically COVERED politics with those two topics so I just kind of say "hey, cool" government is the backbone, and private enterprise fills in the cracks~
it's obvious that a central and decentralized system work well
noobler9 1 year ago
@Lamboragon yea, but smith under no uncertain circumstances warns against proliferation of power amongst businesses the government belongs in a free market economy, to prevent anyone from getting a monopoly, according to his views the government is a specific body with a very well rounded, and wide ranging job, it must exist, and it's the best thing for that job, others can be specialists, but the government is what must exist now that we've developed civilization
according to him~
noobler9 1 year ago
@Lamboragon in short, marx can go to hell because I don't fall into his world view, and while he comments on phenomenon that I am subject to, he doesn't seem to understand people like me exist, and as such, is missing a big part of the picture~
noobler9 1 year ago
@Lamboragon and as such, I cannot simply try to put things into a void and say "that is best" a country is a "real" thing that interacts in the real world, well it's a concept, but the borders given are real, and the organizations real, and so forth
economy is the same in that regard, but economies are subject to the government to a degree in every power structure there is so I work with what can change things proactively, not reactively, which already works for a mediocre form of damage ctrl
