@jimster666 Short answer, No you will still be able to use the sleep function. Longer answer, hibernate moves the data that's stored in the RAM on to your hard drive, this enables the computer to power down completely compared to standby (sleep) which will keep your RAM powered up allowing it to remember what is stored within. Standby will allow your computer to load up faster than hibernate but will keep sipping at power. The term Sleep in Windows 7 is a combination of both by default, it will
I just got my 120 Gig Vertex 3 SSD and combining it with a Gigabyte motherboard. When I fresh install the Win 7on the SSD, do I have to switch the bios to ACHI for best performance or leave it at IDE? I will also have two other HDD drives for storage only.
For an SSD you dont need to disable indexing. My preference is to move the indexing database to anohter drive. That way you have the best of both and it still frees up resources on the SSD.
Will disabling Hibernate prevent me from using the sleep feature on my laptop?? I find it pretty handy to just close my laptop and have everything working once I open it again. Or does the sleep feature use the same memory cache as hibernate?
Thanks mate for doing a tutorial on this but something i read up on another forum was that is is bad to defrag a SSD. As windows 7 defrags on the fly it is a good idea to diable that 2. Thanks for the other tips XD
Hi I'm planning to build a custom gaming rig and I have it all figured out except for the drive. For the same price I can put a 2 TB HDD in it or a 60GB SSD in it. My question is If I decide to put the SSD in it and use that only for os files and drivers, then add a 1TB HDD that I already own for general data storage will the speed increase be worth the extra 2TB of data storage that I would be sacrificing for the same price? If it matters, the system has an intel i7 at 3.2 GHz.
@dkdavid721 A hundred times yes. Running on an SSD is something you will never know you needed until you've tried it. Once you run your OS on an SSD, stop lights will feel like an eternity. You will age terribly waiting for popcorn to pop. You will waste away waiting for the second sneeze that ALWAYS comes after the first sneeze.
60gb on an SSD is very manageable, and you can even install a few games on it using these tips and symbolic links (another video).
@dkdavid721 My OS took up 12 gigs. WoW takes up 11 gigs with big files symbolic linked to my HDD. I have room to install up to 2 games on the SSD as well, so I feel the benefit of the SSD in gaming as well as my OS. I regularly maintain the drive to make space, delete the clutter and run TreeSize to find the space hoggers. The benefits to having an SSD far outweigh the loss in capacity and the effort it takes to maintain the limited drive space.
Great video. I think I will wait for awhile until the technology gets a little better on SSDs But it is the right step forward. I doubt ssds are feasible for gaming systems at the moment?
@kanyaugatiejagwo The technology is already very good, and on a tried and tested 3rd and 4th generations on many brands. Theyre also very feasable for gaming, and dont require large sizes to be useable. I have a 64gig SSD and it is enough to hold WoW as well as Witcher 2 and Dead Island. You simply have to use symbolic links to move the larger unimportant files to your HDD to make it all fit. Using the tips in these 2 videos plus symbolic links, you can make a gaming machine use an SSD in full.
thanks you verry helpfull !

DO NOT ENABLE TRIMM UNLESS YOUR SDD SUPPORTS TRIMM! Sometimes you can upgrade the firmware to get trimm support... Go check it out.

Nice video, but do not worry too much about the write cycles, newer ssd can live more than 2-3mil. hours
dinkisatinki 1 month ago
Good, but you should leave write-cache buffer flushing enabled... This is atleast the case as per Intel's SSD's.
