In fact Kansas City MISSOURI had the name "Kansas City" BEFORE the state of Kansas stole the name, so that state is named after a city in MISSOURI. Confused yet? Don't be, just understand the city is in Missouri and has nothing to do with the state of kansas.

@ElCubanoConguero Actually, depending on his definitions on the word 'city' and 'both', tn1337 is right in a sense that not even he might realize. See, Kansas City is a metropolis, meaning that it spans several areas and two states. KCMO is the anchor city, the city in which has the largest population & influence in the metropolis. Kansas City, Kansas on the other hand, while not as big or industrious as KCMO, is still a fairly large city. Third largest in the KC Metropolis area...

It was named after the not as well known, yet pretty important Kansas River, a fairly important economic staple to Kansasians. Also, as much as I hate to admit, Kansas City Missourians owe our name to the Kansas River as much as the state does. See, before there was Kansas City, MO or KS wise there was the Town of Kansas.
