A typical skydiver will get a glide of 1 to 1 without any wingsuit so 2 to 1 with a wingsuit means the suit is really getting you only one glide point..

Looks like fun, but I can step off a mountain, get over 15 to one glide, climb thousands of feet, fly for hours and miles by comparison a wingsuit flight is more of an adrenaline rush than true flight

A wingsuit flier manipulates the shape of his body to create the desired amount of lift and drag although most wingsuits have a 2 to 1 ratio. This means that for every foot they drop, they go 2 feet forward.

They really don't "fly", but the camera gives that illusion at times. There glide angle is about 1 to 1 meaning they are really dropping at a 45 degree angle, and would still hit going 90 plus if they tried to land without a chute.

If you land withou deploying t a parachute, then you are truly "flying".

Before you are allowed to do this you have to have made like 300 skydiving jumps or more. You can't really "try" it...a

Besides I don't think you would like to "try" it, since it's still very dangerous and you need to know how to move in the air.

1956??? I go back to just prior to WWII and recall that here in the U.S. there was at least one airshow individual that flew in much the same manner. The suit used then was much like this one in appearance. The person launched from an airplane and after demonstrating the flying portion a parachute was deployed with a normal landing. Don't recall any of this being done in the base jump style. Hope this bit of history is interesting to you all.... Wish I knew more details to pass...

The Wing suit was experimented around 1956 and was tested by a Frenchman... Very similar design than the one I saw on TV today Feb 26 08... The problem on the first jump was that the Rip chord of the small ROUND ( at that time) safety parachute was located over your heart and when the wind took your arms it was impossible to bring your arm forward preventing you to reach the rip cord... the Frenchman killed itself... I was a parachutist at that time, I shure didn't want to try that one...
