  • A piece such as this would not generally be titled a "song", as this is more specific to 19th century Romantic art song (ie. Schubert lieder.) One may be able to better understand this piece by researching its background. The "Passion" is a genre that is a musical setting of one of the gospel texts. The material usually covers the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion and is supposed to depict his suffering. With this in mind, this excerpt becomes much more coherent.

  • @ edcrow58 - Surely you can admit that there are parts of Christianity that are depressing and dark and unloving, like the part where Judas betrayed Christ, or when Christ was nailed to a cross and killed? Tan Dun, the composer, approaches Christianity with his own musical aesthetics from his multi-cultural background, so it sounds different from most American Christian music, I don't see how that makes it depressing. Plus this is merely a spall clip of what was at least a two hour program.

  • I was there when they recorded this and I have been wanting a recording of it. It really was one of the most beautiful things I have ever experienced. I have never been so moved by a performance. I cried.

  • he sure is enjoying that bowl of water

  • Fricking AWESOME!!!

  • Awesome. Do you have access to the full recording? I'd love to see it. I was in that class but I ended up dropping it for personal reasons. Thanks..
