  • Al Swearengen had an epileptic younger brother who died as a child, if I'm not mistaken. Calling the reverend "brother" was no coincidence.

  • Beautiful. EFF HBO for killing this great thing that was Deadwood.

  • I love how in a way "God" is answering the Doc's prayers as he is saying it. Milch's brilliance when it comes to showing that God's motive is to allow Al closure over his brother as well as getting the Doc to talk to him again is just what made this show so great.

  • Perhaps the most powerful scene in the whole of Deadwood. I'm in tears every time I watch it. The good doctor' s prayers were indeed answered.

  • Al is human afterall.

  • "did you have to hear their death agonies to know you omnipotence??"

the damn doc is a believer after all..

  • @bygonevexation114 Yes he is, but appears to not be a fan. Smart man.

  • I'm crying every time i'm watching this scene...:-(... So beautiful and so sad !!!

  • couldn't Al have given him a fatal dose of laudanum or a bullet in the head, instead of a long smothering death? Wait, each of those would cost a few cents, HA HA. iImissed this one, however i don't think that this is al being "moral." Al was just getting annoyed by it, really, and he was taking up a bed. In real life apparently, the preacher was shot by indians or highwaymen.

  • @FieldMarshalB Al was showing mercy to a man whos life was at this junction pointless and ending his prolonged needless suffering its quiet clear this is a mercy killing and Al is bothered by it as after he leaves hee wipes his eyes showing us his compassionate side ad a rare glimps at the only time in the sieries Al ever sheds a tear showing us he still has a human side under his rock hard persona

  • @FieldMarshalB Also Al was showing dignity to the reverend smothering him rather then scaring his body this is also an important gesture showing us there is more to Al then we can always tell there are subtle ways We see more of Al's character through the great Acting of Ian Mcshane

  • It´s kinda ironic that the misogynitic psycho killer is the only person who makes the MORAL decision when it comes to the reverends suffering.

  • @Yngvelli he's actually not psychotic, just ruthless and he does what others won't to keep things in order, as much order as there was back then.

  • YOU WANNA BE A ROAD AGENT?????

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MOMENT OF DEADWOOD (SEASON 1°

    R.I.P. DEADWOOD

  • What was wrong with Reverend Smith? What was he suffering from?

  • @94jg brain tumor i reckon

  • @94jg Brain lesion/tumor. He was going to keep getting more and more crazy and go through more and more pain until he died.

  • Al was a true friend to the Reverend, and Al ended his friends suffering and misery..

  • RIP Deadwood. You left us too soon

  • Wish you would have shown just 10 more seconds when the Judge asked to meet with Swearengen, who sends him upstairs and avoids eye contact so he can (subtly) wipe a tear. Way awesome stuff!

  • By the way, Aggressive comments towards Small Diddly aside, Thank You for posting this scene. The only moment I find comparable is Al watching the Reverend from his Balcony. Ian Mcshane can do more with a simple look than most actors achieve in a lifetime. To me these two moments were when Al was shown to be more than just the corrupt town boss, he was its soul. Again, Thank You

  • As for Deadwood being factious, it as researched pain stakenly, almost all characters have a real life counter part. That being said, clearly it is written by a guy for H.B.O. in very much factious, with people who are onced documented to be alive.

    Much like the bible.

  • awesome trolling man

I _would_ recomend being more subtle, but then, you totally reeled in people being this blatant.

you'll still be negative after my measly +1 but whatever theres only so much a person can do.

  • Wow, you know, you really exemplify the need for Goddamned people to evaluate your Goddamned thoughts before inflicting your word Diarrhea on the rest of us.

I've never understood how you can take scripture and apply it to a beautiful scene of one the most hardass characters in television allowing a faithful and good man to finally find some peace. Al is allowing the Reverend to go to his final rest. Cocksucker

Goddamned offense earlier intended, Doc Coccoran

  • Professorchaos - It's South Park you Douche, Jesus... and seriously, you "sign" every post? I mean I'm trying to picture the sad type cocksucker what needs to refer to himself as "Big Daddy" and then carry on some Hoople-headed rant against HBO, I luckily get no further than a guy who hasn't been laid in over 6 months.

I respect Deadwood for what it IS and Was- an incredibly written show that allowed for a range of human depth seldom seen on television. Ass

  • "I'm trying to picture ... "Big Daddy" and ... get no further than a guy who hasn't been laid in over 6 MONTHS!!!"

Hmmm...How do you 'PICTURE' a guy NOT getting laid? It sounds like first you have to 'PICTURE' him getting laid then erase that memory for the past 6 months.

Either way it sounds creepy and actually quite AUTObiographical.

Of course, you tipped us off that this was autobigraphical w/your frequent use of the word 'co-ksucker.'

    haha

    Big Daddy

    Always Too Easy...

  • Christ Bashing? are u stoned or stupid? thats right u dont know anything about the show, u need filling in yet u choose to shoot ur mouth off without any facts, The Doc was infact praying for the deliverence of the rev, and at the sametime his prayer being answered, through mercy and love from the one character of the show proven to not have that in him, but for one small moment. he shows compassion and love for a brother, can it be anymore Christ friendly? get some facts... ty

  • Just perfect storytelling. The brother line has so many layers to it alone. The fact that in a earlier ep. Al talked about his brother along with the doc pleading with God. Amazing.

  • "You can go now, brother". One of the best delivered lines of the series.

  • @gutsdozer it was his way of saying good bye to his actual brother (al's not Ian's) as he mentions earlier in the season his brother suffered from the same thing. While AL joked about charging people a nickel to watch the fits this scene showed how much he really loved his brother and shows Al is not about making someone suffer who has done nothing to him.

  • This is what TV could be if it wanted to. So many great moments in DW to chose from, this is one of the best. This is the difference btwn Al and Cy. Cy would have tossed the Rev in the woods.

The hell with those H-fucking-B-cocksucking-O squareheads for leaving this show unfinished.

  • true about cy - i wish they had a few more seasons to see if cy found some redemption. as tom nuttall might have said "HBO sucks c*ck by choice."

  • This scene hands down displays the talents of one Awesome cast of actors, mayeb the greatest assembly of talent the smalls creen has ever scene. and in My Opinon deserved the Oscar if it had been a Movie ath the theater it would be Best Picture...the doctors prayers tears your heart out then Al`s mercy finishes the meotional rollercoaster in sublime fashion
