I fucking love everything they released since 2008, but their latest songs are more different from each other than the songs in TiA - plus, with no robot vocals. Man, I can't wait for another full length album.
i love the cover artwork. it reminds me of some old school death metal covers by DAN SEAGRAVE (Suffocation, Pestilence, Morbid Angel etc).. however this one was painted by someone else.
What do we have here? Another trully amazing band deviating from the monotone and cheesy realms of metal and into the glorious path of freer progressive musical creation... and I say it's all right for me!!!
@choganskateboarding And i'm sure they'd rather fuck themselves than cater to closed minded fans such as yourself, double chode. Stop complaining and go listen to the butt rock on your ipod. If liking masterful music like this is gay then I'll be coming out to my parents the next time I visit. It'll be hard but I think I'll manage. Also, you're a chode. Optimus Chode, leader of the autochodes from Michael Bay's "Chodeformers".
@Dtoburn2 Look man if this is the side of Cynic you liked the most in the first place then more power to you. I on the other hand listened for that feeling of ruling the world while the solo from Integral Birth blasts through my headphones. All Im saying is dont be suprised when Cynic starts opening for Underoath.
Im a metalhead who (unlike most) is mature and appreciates other music. This song/EP is great. But from a totally serious standpoint, Focus was absolutely their best album. I wish they would still write (Even as a side project) something like their old-school stuff.
I deeply relate to the lyrics and find the music fucking bad ass...afterall, "I have everything I need"!!! But still want more....isn't that the human nature??? "Box up my bones, I'm coming home, I'm free"....damn!!! I'm ready!!!
@matt420740 opeth still the shit, period. they aint gone soft, the lyrics to the songs on heritage could NOT have sounded more evil had they been sung with screams and growls. fuck aqll that other bullshit. "god IS DEAD!!!"
@matt420740 It happens to every talented musician. When we are young we want to write heavy and technically challenging music, it allows us to outlet our aggression, and impress our peers. As we grow older, those things lose our interest, and writing something clean and more appealing to the ear begin to replace those lost interests
@TheHostUnknown Eh, not really, it's that when musicians are young they have that burn but its a burn for music, for individuality, when they grow older they learn to manipulate it so that that's all they do is draw out what they write before they feel it, when in our youth, we feel it deeply, youre right about the youth part but its the experience that dulls the blade that once cut reality, if you listen to metallica you'll hear the clear manipulation as well as many others.
Just got this, it’s amazing. I loved Traced In Air, but Re-Traced was a welcome breath of fresh air. This album just pummels you with gusts of fresh hurricane winds. Best of both worlds in my opinion :)
When I first heard Cynic, I literally cried from joy. They make me happy when I'm sad, only band to do so. Greatest band ever to exist. Since their demos to now.
I don't wanna be a dick, but this track actually sounds sorta like something you might hear on one of those college indie stations. The type of music the kids who hang out in "scenes" would enjoy. White belts and skinny jeans all the way. I think its the clean vocals that give me that impression. I have nothing against clean vocals at all, and I actually really enjoy them, but there are just some singing styles/voices I just don't enjoy...Cynic features a voice I don't enjoy.
@GoongalaGoongala If you go read Paul's interview with npr, you'll realize these guys aren't college indie douches. Far from it, Paul and Sean are musical geniuses. The influence of this album comes from shamanic tribes in Peru that believe music can heal a person's consciousness and ease their souls. If anything, this is their greatest album/ep. You really have to understand and love music to not sell out like most artists today. Why would you compare Cynic to indie kids?
I read that interview. I don't see how pseudoscientific, new-age mysticism-type beliefs are genius. They're good musicians, but their beliefs outside of music are hardly genius. I bet Paul thinks psychics have real powers. Also, the concept is pretty much the type of thing indie kids would love. Besides, this EP is a lot poppier than their previous works. It's almost like they... sold out... JK bro, they prefer simple music. Which is why Tymon left. Ease up on the fanaticism, bro.
@supertrixxx Yeah, it bothers me when musically brilliant musicians have stupid beliefs. Like Varg Vikernes, or Sun Ra, or the dudes from maudlin of the Well (at one point). Although, since the music is usually inspired by their beliefs, I can't hate on em too much. I don't think Cynic sold out, btw. It's possible for musicians to make a conscious or unconscious choice to go a more "accessible" route without it necessarily being motivated by a desire for popularity.
@GoongalaGoongala Dude, no offense, but why would you even allow that thought to come into your head at all when you're listening to music? I care about music, not clothes.
I didn't much like Cynic before, but their newer material has turned me off completely. Not a fan and listening to this track only reinforced my opinion of the band.
@GoongalaGoongala Hmmmm....I liked 'Focus' a lot back in the day, and I thought 'Traced...' had some cool moments, but this? I dunno, it's not grabbing me...
@PitchforkRape Ah, ya got me! That's EXACTLY why I'm not sure on this E.P....I was gonna chaulk it up to shitty Youtube sound quality, and actually buy this to be able to listen to it properly, but I'll just say "I'm stinky poo-poo!" if I'm asked whether I've heard it & what I think of it. Thank you, kind stranger!!
@charlesandhisworld Well, as Adam Jones (guitarist of Tool) put it, "when people call us metal i feel like taking a bath, its an insult. i hate all that '''ughhh'' metal attitude"
Thats what i mean basically. a lot of progressive bands are pretty sophisticated, dont rely on ridiculous images, facial expressions and the sort.
IE: i love this stuff, dream theatre, tool, porcupine tree, but i personally cannot stand stuff like Iron Maiden and Metallica and those metal bands as its all as adam said
@ainsleywalker Yeah, I'm a fan of Tool but Adam's statement really doesn't make any sense at all to me. Its completely nonsensical? Whats wrong with over-the-top imagery and....facial expressions? What? I've been a metal fan for many years and only a select minority of fans I've met possess an "ugly" attitude if thats what you're referring to. You're missing out on a lot of great music if you take that kind of attitude. Listen to the MUSIC, ignore the stuff you don't like.
@charlesandhisworld No no I'm not saying I don't listen to things with a certain imagery. For example, I was listening to bloody Tokio Hotel earlier haha, Monsoon is a great song. It just so happens a lot of bands I don't enjoy, happen to have a very metal attitude. when i say ugly metal attitude i dont mean physically ugly btw, i meant just a general nasty, holier-than-thou attitude you know what i mean?
@ainsleywalker I think you're highly mistaken with your assessment of Metallica and Iron Maiden for having a nasty holier-than-thou attitude, because that simply isn't true, especially in Iron Maiden's case. And why does a "nasty, holier-than-thou" attitude necessarily have to be a "metal attitude"? Why malign an entire genre? I could easily apply the same derogatory description to say, jazz fusion or classical music, but I don't, because I know its simply not true.
@charlesandhisworld Either way I don't like those bands. I study Music journalism and I have an very open minded view of music, I just don't like them, not to say I can't see good in their music!
Just a lot of bands in that general area come packaged with a very metal attitude, as Adam and a lot of other people despise, so it's not like it doesn;'t exist. But anyway been nice talking to you take care
@ainsleywalker Yeah or maybe you and Adam are just mistaken? You have a very open minded view of music, which is why you judge whether you like a band or not based on some fabricated "attitude". Right.
@charlesandhisworld Oh yeah Adam Jones who was a contemporary artist with a lot of the bands he's talking about, must be wrong, as are a lot of other commentators of that time.
and you're just twisting what I'm saying now so just forget it, seriously sick of people like you on youtube who HAVE to attack other peoples views when they have basis.
Give Adam Jones and Maynard etc a call they obviously know fuck all.
@fullatvideo Yeah I love Tool. I love how my comment is a top comment, I was just joking at the end of a slightly heated conversation. I guess people liked my sarcasm ha
@ainsleywalker Don't bag on Lateralus just because Tool's got some fans who are morons. That album is legendary in its own right, most bands will never even come close to creating something as mind-expanding as that album.
@OBNOXIOUSUSERNAME Woah I can't remember why I said that but I'm a huge huge Tool fan I was probably saying it in a sarcastic way man, check the comments I'm not entirely sure but I definitely wasn't dissing Tool, I think I was joking that i'm a crybaby Tool fan or whatever the conversation was even about.. I'm going to check now.
@redneckdipper1337 .. I respect your POV , but I have to challenge the idea of it not being "metal".On one side of that there is a lot of bands that piss me off claiming that they are "metal" .but Id gladly be handed this as a metal record than half the shit that is coming out in the last 10 years.I find this closer in relation to death human (for obv reasons) more so than most "metal" bands claim to be.maybe there is a good heavy dose of thrash hidden somewhere in this album
Ok in the beginning of the song I keep hearing something that sounds like Paul shredding up a scale super fast....is that really there or am I imagining it?
lol, you can't make that out? get better speakers/headphones/fix EQ. it sounds very similar to the "solo", might be a looped sample. also, all guitar parts were written and recorded by paul.
One useful description that aids in the nature of how to explain their evolution is bringing up how The Mars Volta evolved from The Bedlam in Goliath to their latest album, Ochtahedron. Very similar, in retrospect.
I love Cynic and Paul, and I'm glad that he's comfortable with his voice now to sing without the vocoder, but I get so annoyed when he says "everything I 'nade'" instead of "need". New Cynic rules, but he shouldn't try to change his voice to match the indie rock-ish direction.
I want to punch everyone who says they're fans of Cynic but don't like the new EP. Paul no longer expresses his art in a metal form, like we saw on the last year's EP. It doesn't make Cynic worse or gayer, those idiots just can't see anything past the METAL label.
@Pakanahymni - I understand your frustration - yet - I wish people were more willing to accept our differences in artistic taste. I think Cynic's new direction is wonderful. I find this EP as emotionally freeing as any record I have ever listened to. I would like my peers to share in that joy - but if they can't - I wish them the best in finding music that CAN liberate them the way this music liberates me. I declare - I have everything I need.
jesus christ bro, it's possible to dislike this album even if you're not a metalhead. the biggest gripe i have with this album the minimalism and repetitiveness. frankly i don't think it contains many interesting musical ideas. paul's vocals aren't great either. your idea of fandom is ridiculous, as if to say to be a 'fan' you must mindlessly accept all output in whatever form. i don't give a shit if it's metal or not, i barely listen to metal. to me, this is underwhelming.
@supertrixxx Totally agree with you, and while I don't find this new direction to be totally unprecedented, it does feel surprisingly generic most of the time, and even lazy. The most interesting moments in the songs I've heard so far were the electronica and instrumental bits, but the pop choruses were almost too much to bare. Some times it works when bands incorporate pop music into their sound (dillinger escape plan), but here it feels too easy, and in the end boring.
@matternicuss I quite agree with you... But the more I listen to this song, the more I find the chorus acceptable (but maybe "acceptable" is not what I was expecting from a Cynic song).
@Draclord35 Yes, it is 'acceptable.' I mean, after all, it isn't especially obnoxious, but it isn't exciting or exceptional either. Focus and (to a lesser degree) Traced in Air were great albums, full of ideas that I've yet to hear another band properly duplicate. I think it's important that bands experiment, but I still demand quality derived from passion.
I fucking love everything they released since 2008, but their latest songs are more different from each other than the songs in TiA - plus, with no robot vocals. Man, I can't wait for another full length album.

OBNOXIOUSUSERNAME 1 week ago

@redneckdipper1337 Come on, genres are not important. Cynic are genre on their own.

I didn't have faith in humanity until Cynic's new EP dropped. Faith restored.

Ok in the beginning of the song I keep hearing something that sounds like Paul shredding up a scale super fast....is that really there or am I imagining it?
igotwoodhaha 3 months ago
@igotwoodhaha
lol, you can't make that out? get better speakers/headphones/fix EQ. it sounds very similar to the "solo", might be a looped sample. also, all guitar parts were written and recorded by paul.

@igotwoodhaha skip to 3:40 and all your dreams will come true!

One useful description that aids in the nature of how to explain their evolution is bringing up how The Mars Volta evolved from The Bedlam in Goliath to their latest album, Ochtahedron. Very similar, in retrospect.

When people say metal is nothing but screaming and chugs and shit... I'll show them this. :)
VatsABingo 3 months ago
@VatsABingo Cynic is one of those bands that I think has actually evolved themselves out of the metal genre. This is.. it just lacks description.
MyEggIsBoiled 3 months ago
@VatsABingo this alternative rock track isn't metal

I love Cynic and Paul, and I'm glad that he's comfortable with his voice now to sing without the vocoder, but I get so annoyed when he says "everything I 'nade'" instead of "need". New Cynic rules, but he shouldn't try to change his voice to match the indie rock-ish direction.

What a creative way to begin the song!Need to purchase this album.

One of the few artists that I will purchase entire albums from.

This track is drowned by the chorus which plays like 4 times in the song, kind of reveals a lack of work for me.

Just this one song makes this EP worth it.

I want to punch everyone who says they're fans of Cynic but don't like the new EP. Paul no longer expresses his art in a metal form, like we saw on the last year's EP. It doesn't make Cynic worse or gayer, those idiots just can't see anything past the METAL label.
Pakanahymni 3 months ago
@Pakanahymni So what? some people only listen to metal, its as valid as only listening to jazz or classical music
Dtoburn2 3 months ago
@Pakanahymni - I understand your frustration - yet - I wish people were more willing to accept our differences in artistic taste. I think Cynic's new direction is wonderful. I find this EP as emotionally freeing as any record I have ever listened to. I would like my peers to share in that joy - but if they can't - I wish them the best in finding music that CAN liberate them the way this music liberates me. I declare - I have everything I need.

jesus christ bro, it's possible to dislike this album even if you're not a metalhead. the biggest gripe i have with this album the minimalism and repetitiveness. frankly i don't think it contains many interesting musical ideas. paul's vocals aren't great either. your idea of fandom is ridiculous, as if to say to be a 'fan' you must mindlessly accept all output in whatever form. i don't give a shit if it's metal or not, i barely listen to metal. to me, this is underwhelming.
supertrixxx 3 months ago 3
@supertrixxx Totally agree with you, and while I don't find this new direction to be totally unprecedented, it does feel surprisingly generic most of the time, and even lazy. The most interesting moments in the songs I've heard so far were the electronica and instrumental bits, but the pop choruses were almost too much to bare. Some times it works when bands incorporate pop music into their sound (dillinger escape plan), but here it feels too easy, and in the end boring.
matternicuss 3 months ago
@matternicuss I quite agree with you... But the more I listen to this song, the more I find the chorus acceptable (but maybe "acceptable" is not what I was expecting from a Cynic song).
Draclord35 3 months ago
@Draclord35 Yes, it is 'acceptable.' I mean, after all, it isn't especially obnoxious, but it isn't exciting or exceptional either. Focus and (to a lesser degree) Traced in Air were great albums, full of ideas that I've yet to hear another band properly duplicate. I think it's important that bands experiment, but I still demand quality derived from passion.
matternicuss 3 months ago
Much better than the tittle track but it still sounds like a bit heavier Aeon spoke than Cynic
