  • Liar liar, pants on fire.

    All my videos are knackered.

Snow storms & slurred, slipping sound .

  • @AnElephantsChild Then put their guarantee to the test and demand they supply you with a new tape or, if they can't find one, your money back! ;)

  • i remember this advert on tv and it was the golden age of tv

but thanks for these memories .

  • That bastard skeleton cracked me up!! nice to see him again.

  • I still can't help but notice the resemblance to Ming Campbell.

  • Considering nobody I know owns a VHS anymore, I'm pretty certan I won't be watching 'Scotch Tape' in 2021.

  • There's something really creepy about a talking skeleton extoling the virtues of Scotch videotapes, I found it creepy at the time.

  • He must have been minted to have the only plasma screen tv in the 80's !!!!

  • I remember these adverts when i was a little kid. They used to scare thew hell out of me...seriously. Animated skeletons? They got banned for that very reason - they were too frightening for kids. And I WAS only little lol

  • Guaranteed for a lifetime? Seriously? Ohhhhhhkay. And would this be the lifetime of a common ant or when dvds came into circulation, because I still have a scotch tape and what dya know!

  • The German brands like BASF, Scotch & Agfa were actually better than the Japanese video tapes like Fuji, Maxell and TDK, but the Japanese audio tapes were precision made, the general public didn't believe that even though I worked in a shop selling them...

  • i want a new one lol

  • Hmm why would the 2021 Derby be using the "World of Sport" theme, which ended in 1985?

  • The reason he's still using VHS in 2021 is because he doesn't want to waste money throwing away his perfectly good blank tape.

  • Has anyone actually returned a tape to the company to see what happens..LoL

  • @DOKK212

More than likely, 3M won't honor it but not necessarily because of the age and wear'n'tear of the tape but because they don't make consumer media anymore; 3M spun off their consumer media business into a separate company: Imation.

Technically, you'd have to take it up to Imation (and they'd likely deny it not just because of age and wear'n'tear but because the guarantee applies to 3M, not Imation).

  • @Futurebobbers Kwl.

  • 0:13

    The most awesome VCR ever!

  • i see the pre flatscreen tv on the wall quite

    creative though they should relaunch

this advert featuring the blu-ray recordable disc and it is inventive

    this advert was.

    frankie smales

    (retro tv advert fan)

  • I'm quite pleased that they were sensible enough to imagine the 2021 Derby as a normal horse race, rather than flying robot horses as most 80s imaginations of post 2000 existence seemed to involve something needlessly futuristic.

  • Wonder why he did not up-grade to a dvd player when he was getting the plasma on the wall? The quality of those tapes must be good! He probably had some old 80s porn on the tape. Must be frustrating without any knackers

  • @pinkanglia

even though it was set in 2021 but the advert was made by aardman

studios in the late 70's and dvd's did not came in til 96 but old scifi

films had the pre-plasma tvs on walls like star trek tos and 2001

a space odyssey but this advert was in the beta max period

so thats why i was hard to have a dvd in a late 70's advert

because they did not exist ok.

  • @FRANKIESHANOWSKIY2K0 The Advert was made in1983. I can assure that next to no families had a video recorder in the late 70's. They didn't go mainstream until the early 80's

  • The advert's now 26 years old...and we've got less than half of that time to go until the real 2021 Derby - worrying stuff :(

  • Well, I bought a sony betamax on ebay in 2007, my first ever betamax. I now own 3 sony superbeta sl-hf950s dating from 1985. Picture quality is miles better than vhs and the recordings are superb.

  • They always were, it was never about the quality that Betamax lost the original format war.

  • The Derby 2021 with the old World Of Sport music.

    Gotta love it!!!!!!!!

  • LOL, yes =) Notice the flat panel TV though....someone was tuned into the future ;) I guess if it was the 90s, they would have had VR headgear ;)

  • Nearly 20% of UK homes had a VCR in 1983!!

  • love it retro

  • i like the face he pools at the end :o

  • re records not fade away...re records not fade away....

  • I was born in 1983 and I honestly still remember this advert. Must have ran for years

  • Fantastic..... and in all honesty, I still have plenty of old VHS tapes from over 20 years ago and they still play and record just as good as they did when new. So I think the pledge was fair.

What an uncanny ad though.... he's watching a wide screen flat screen plasma tv. And in 1983 who would've had that concept? and it's happened exactly that way. Very cool.

  • he is watching a plasma, didnt notice

    i agree that it's cool

    lol

  • Love it. Really odd seeing this now.

  • I love that saying you can watch Scotch forever every recording as good as the first or we give you a new tape you can watch Scotch forever this is the best advert ever thanks for the upload it is fab

  • He's got a plasma!

  • Yes he has

  • Thats a really nice skeleton advertising the videos thanks for the upload

  • omg i miss the 80s, they had such wunderful imaganation

  • I dont see why some people wont be playing VHS tapes in 2021,i have tapes 20+ years old that are still fine, othes that are a bit iffy, but most are fine. With the DVD,most peoples VHS collections have ended up in charity shops for 50p each.Having been the number one media for 20-odd years, all those millions of VHS cassettes out there will not dissapear for many years. There will be a 2nd hand market for years. You could get the same film on DVD for a tenner,on VHS for pennies.

  • @blaster2012 And indeed they still make machines that play VHS, albeit they're now combined with DVD or even Blu-Ray. Many people still have the collections of tapes they built up over those years. And there are even still people who use VHS to timeshift - it's still good enough for the purpose at hand and many DVD players don't record.

  • Your telling me Scotch sold a walk, talking skeleton a video with a lifetimes guarantee!

  • well i have some recodings on scotch tapes that are not as good THEY DO DETERIORATE....perhaps i should return them .

though i still prefer VHS to DVD anyday - for recordings - ive had 5 DVD recorders since 1999 that have broken down or gone wrong and several disks that have errors and wont play.

at least if a VHS tape broke- you could fix it with tape - but with a digital disk- youre fucked !

  • I doubt that we would be using tapes in 2012 lol

  • I haven't seen this since about...oh 1983. It's clear what they were suggesting, but it still seems a rather macabre way to sell your wares, making a friendly character out of a representation of death!

  • who would use a recording technology for more than 15 years anyway, it would be obsolete? Scotch knew this. The 'Guarantee' was a moot point, I imagine they honoured it, but I'll bet there were few people who bothered to take back thier tapes for a new one...no one realised that you couldn't prove it was'nt as good as the first taping - because your subsequent recordings erased the older one!

  • That's precisely it. At the moment you can try Tizer for free at the supermarket, but you have to send off for your refund... No-one bothers, that's the beauty of it.

  • That's the first ever scotch advert. Used to freak me out big time when I was 4. Just look at the skeleton's mouth when he falls off the chair; it looks like a sharp tooth. Well, that's the way I saw it all those years ago...

  • Thank god for that It wasnt only me. I was the same age to

  • Well I have not seen those adverts at all before but they are all awesome I like the skeleton especially the voice when they say you can watch Scotch forever that is the best part although I dont agree with that because nobody can watch videos forever it only last 14 years then after that it breaks

  • Isn't that an LCD TV he's got? it looks like one

  • It's set in 2021, it says DERBY 2021.

Trying to tell us that scotch tapes are so good, you'd still be able to watch them in 2021.

  • 2021 eh, the tapes must be great

  • Although it's still the old music to World of Sport

  • by 2021 the digital switchover will be all around the UK

  • no it's 2012

  • There's actually another Scotch advert featuring the skeleton's, it comes from 1990 and it has something to do with a moon landing. Anyway I think I have it on one of my old tapes.

  • THATS IT BUDDY!! you got it im dying to see it again i was about 5 years old when i seen it oh please upload it its my favorite

  • Any chance of uploading it?

  • Well...it may sound a while, but at the begining of next year I'm getting a new TV Tuner Card for my Betamax machine, so along with those uploads it should appear.

  • Oh Great if you have it on a video tape please could you upload it since I havnt seen that advert at all before

  • Oh great if it is please could you upload this onto you tube I would also like to see some Scotch footage from the year 1994 it be good to see some adverts from 1994 to do with the Scotch video

  • Oh great if you have it nedoflanders2 please could you upload it onto you tube it would be great to see that again it would be awesome to see a Scotch advert from 1990 also I would like to also see a 1994 Scotch advert

  • awesome!!!! i never seen that one in my whole life i would imagine it would be one of the early ones. have you got a one where he's on the moon?
