I was 10 years old and had just noticed Star Trek TNG as they aired it on Fox every night of the week during that time. I saw this movie opening weekend in theaters and it had a fan crowd like I'd never seen before. People actually clapped when Chang's ship was destroyed. I'll never forget how new it was to me back then. The theater actually had a model Enterprise and a model Bird of Prey with battle damage hanging from the ceiling in the lobby, and played the soundtrack to VI constantly.
Wow, 20 years old already. Holy cow, it's hard to believe it's been that long. I saw this in the theater when I was almost 13. It was friggin' EPIC on the big screen.
i think the biggest problem this film has is its unspectacular / boring ending. old man dramatically running hallways up and down and finally beat a guy with a gun. *yawn*
This was one of the best Star Trek movies. This and Star Trek: The Voyage Home were my favorite Star Trek movies. The Wrath of Khan and First Contact were great, as well.
The Klingons represent Id: they are warlike and vicious. Honor is the most important thing to them.
The Vulcans represent Ego: they are focused, logical, and peaceful. Never falling victim to their passions.
In a metaphorical sense they represent the duality of man.
We all have a dark, malicious side. But then there is the side that some highly intelligent people use to their advantage. This is where science, technology and philosophy come into place.
What happened to the Klingon Homeworld, Q'nos? After Praxis exploded, wheren't the Klingons supposed to evacuate their homeworld. In the Next Generation series, it appears their was no evacuation.
So what happened? Was Q'nos deemed ok to live on afterall?
@pluto4847 I'll have to get back to you with a more logical response. But my theory is that they used some kind of compounds to synthesize a greenhouse effect on Q'onos.
FYI this was a test film for Dolby Digital 5.1. The very first film. Much like the same way that Superman 1 had Dolby Stereo 5.1. Batman Returns would get the wide release and prove to be a success. Jurassic Park, however, was tested and released in DTS 5.1, Dolby Stereo, and Dolby 5.1.
Definitely the best Trek movie trailer out there. Awesome narration, tells you everything you need to know, and doesn't lie like the fucking Generations trailers.
Chang: I have so wanted to meet you captain. One warrior to another?"
Kirk: "Riiiiiighht....."
I loved this movie so much.
I have the Undiscovered Country soundtrack, yet I don't recall ever hearing the arrangement from 1:16 - 1:45. was that track just made for the trailer and if so does anyone know what it's called?
I too remember going to see this great movie at the age of 17 and think this is my fav. Of them all very cool movie !! Captain Kirk at his best !!!! ;-)))
I remember seeing this in the theater when I was 12; very epic to say the least! "Wrath of Khan" might be a better work of cinema, but this is still my favorite Star Trek film.
Saw STAR TREK VI in 70mm Dolby stereo THX three times in one day at the Empire Leicester Square London, February 14th 1992 it was JBL deep low end out of this world fun.
@bluenail03 star trek 6 was in 1991; this would not be the last star trek movie for Kirk, Scotty, Chekov who were all in star trek 7 in 1994, and Spock in star trek 11 in 2009 (as the played by the original actors) but it was the last on screen for Uhura, Bones and Sulu (although Sulu later did Voyager in the mid 90's with a plot that was linked to this movie)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) Star Trek: Generations (1994) Star Trek (2009)
I've seen 2-4 several times, and I finally convinced my parents to borrow 1 from the library. Now I must convince them to borrow 5-7, especially 6, from the library.
It was the original sub-title for Star Trek 2, whicht he studio made the director change. The phrase "The Undiscovered Country" is from Hamlet and its a reference to death, "that undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns". In the film, "the undiscovered country" is a reference to the future.
I'm pretty new to the Star Trek sub-culture and I'm really fascinated with all of it. Can anyone tell me which episode or movie (if there is any) of the Star Trek franchise that shows how the Federation and the Klingons made peace? Thanks.
@mahdogzbite Despite some exceptions, the Klingons and the Federation have been allies ever since the events of Star Trek VI. There are plenty of TNG,VOY and DS9 episodes that showcase there alliance like DS9:"By Inferno's Light" which featured Kilngons fighting alongside the Fed in the Dominion War. Although I once saw a TOS episode which oddly enough featured Kirk and a Klingon General getting along in the end.
OK... I thought there was a particular moment in the Star Trek universe when the Klingons and the Feds came together. I'm curious because I just watched an epsiode of TNG where cloaked Klingon warbirds worked with the Enterprise to scare off the Romulans. Before that, I thought that there was just a ceasefire or maybe an alliance between the two... I never thought the Klingons actually made it as a member of the Federation of Planets. Thanks.
@mahdogzbite Oh wait... what am I saying.... the Klingon empire is not a member of the Federation... my bad. I just got corrected through text messaging by my Trekker friends. Thanks again.
@mahdogzbite They are by the 26th century, (See Enterprise: Azati Prime). Since the Organian trety they have practically been the extreme wing of Starfleet anyway. Most fan theories have the Klingon Empire going through a renaissance with science and culture being more important in thier society as the reason for the inclusion into the Federation.
All credit to Channel 4(Television channel in Britain) to have shown all the feature films from the Motion Picture 1979 to "Nemesis" 2003 on 10 consecutive Saturdays.
Now this weekend, they are showing them all 10 films over 2 days!!!!
So? What really matters is the story and how well written it is and it was overall. It had depth and substance to it which is a lot more than the new movie which was why I was so disappointed with it. It's a real shame it looks like trek's days of the exploration of the human condition is definitely over now.
This film was wonderful. If only they had a larger budget to incorporate the utterly brilliant storyline with greater special effects and explored Chang's character more (I'm a die-hard Plummer fan). It's also a shame that Generations didn't pick up immediately where this film ended and wasn't the epic follow-up/crossover between TOS and TNG that it could have been...had a great mind like Nick Meyer written it...

@MegaDaniel1414 Jedi council? This isn't Star Wars. I find it interesting how they tied The Original Series and TNG together with having an appearance by Michael Dorn...playing Worf, Worf's grandfather.
the shot of a torpedo hitting the enterprise at 1:11 before kirk says "signal our surrender", that shot is from star trek III- a movie made in 1984- this was amde in 1991
The Best star trek movie of all! this was the first I ever saw, I was about 5 when I saw it on tape:A+. Setting a new era for the federation and the klingon empire( as shown in star trek TNG for ex.) At first I had a feeling that Lieut. Valeris was responsible for what happen and setting kirk up, she was the only person to be near his quarters and hear what he said about the klingons.
MY personal favourite of all the Star Trek movies, of both generations. I know that isn't the popular opinion, but it's dated far better than the earlier ones and it's much better and more intense than the other later ones. First Contact gives it some competition, but this one comes out on top.
The rebooted movie series can kiss my ass. THIS is Star Trek.
@ArcaneAzmadi - Didn't say it did. However, the fact that most fans and most movie goers enjoyed it would suggest that the film makers would have no problem kissing your romp all the way to the bank!
Wow that's one explosive trailer. It's really captivating, especially considering that it was made 25 years ago, when the trailers were much slower and less cut then todays flash-bang ones, which are rather teasers.
@NIGHTWHMAN His names David Warner. Really good actor. Played Jack the Ripper in Time After Time with Malcom McDowell. Nicholas Myer wrote & directed the movie went on to do Star Trek 2.
General Chang -"Have you not a sense of decency in you Kirk? We come in peace, and you blatenly defile that peace! and for that, I shall BLOW you out of the stars!!!"
@bsjt I think Wrath of Khan captures the true 'human' essence of Trek, the friendship, sacrifice, memories.. that is reflected in the individual and close circle.
This captures the 'Vision' and message of Trek in the way that reflects good and truth overcoming deceit and prejudice (therefore has more complicated aspect to it) for universal peace.
Each has its own merits, both combined truly brings out the best in Trek imo, and should be looked upon as diff side of the same coin.
Because the TNG crew hadn't been established yet whereas there was a guaranteed audience of people who would pay the price of a cinema ticket to see the TOS crew in a movie.
And I'm glad that David Warner and Chris Plummer reprised their roles as Gorkon and Chang in ST6's prequel and PC-Game "Star Trek: Klingon Academy". (it's one hell of a game which has one hell of a story, which explains how Chang got his eye patch, how Gorkon became Chancellor and Chang chief of staff, why Chang was part of the conspiracy and why he likes Shakespeare)
I was 10 years old and had just noticed Star Trek TNG as they aired it on Fox every night of the week during that time. On the other hand, another might argue that this text is
carefully constructed propaganda designed to "let slip
the dogs of war". A Wiki Leak?
Cry Havoc : "I'm soo confused".
Let slip the dogs of war : "Blue team, attack".
From Star Trek VI :
We haven't fired.
According to our database, we have.
johnnytoogood007 3 months ago
The present day financial crisis, or financial chaos, may be a
case of "cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war". Perhaps the
"terrorists" are purposely sabotaging the banking system, to
destroy the United States? If Reagan had not deregulated
the S&L industry... But who would believe that Reagan was
a "closet communist"? Nevertheless, judge a tree by its fruit.
johnnytoogood007 3 months ago
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.
Possble meaning :
Havoc means "disorder", or "chaos" (the appearance
of disorder). Hence, to "cry havoc" is to say, "I have no
idea what is going on". And to "cry havoc and let slip
the dogs of war" is to pretend not to know what is going
on, while instigating "chaos".

In Shakespeare, the undiscovered country (from whose bourn no traveller returns) is death. In Star Trek, it's the future.

the shot of a torpedo hitting the enterprise at 1:11 before kirk says "signal our surrender", that shot is from star trek III- a movie made in 1984- this was amde in 1991

@ArcaneAzmadi "The rebooted movie series can kiss my ass. " It will, all the way to the bank.
Zenutheduck 1 year ago
@Zenutheduck "Successful" does not equal "good". Not even remotely.
ArcaneAzmadi 1 year ago
@ArcaneAzmadi - Didn't say it did. However, the fact that most fans and most movie goers enjoyed it would suggest that the film makers would have no problem kissing your romp all the way to the bank!

Undiscovered Country > Wrath of Khan.

Best TOS era movie, hands down. This film is EPIC.

Wow that's one explosive trailer. It's really captivating, especially considering that it was made 25 years ago, when the trailers were much slower and less cut then todays flash-bang ones, which are rather teasers.

@adaseth - That would have been 20 years ago....

Plummer the best klingon ever!
mu702000 1 year ago 4
Plummer is brilliant as the psychopathic, cunning General Chang. Couldn't have picked a better adversary for Kirk (sorry Khan).

General Chang -"Have you not a sense of decency in you Kirk? We come in peace, and you blatenly defile that peace! and for that, I shall BLOW you out of the stars!!!"
Fuckin ingenious dialogue!!!

The best of the Trek films, sorry Khan. And still a great trailer.
bsjt 1 year ago 2
@bsjt I think Wrath of Khan captures the true 'human' essence of Trek, the friendship, sacrifice, memories.. that is reflected in the individual and close circle.
This captures the 'Vision' and message of Trek in the way that reflects good and truth overcoming deceit and prejudice (therefore has more complicated aspect to it) for universal peace.
Each has its own merits, both combined truly brings out the best in Trek imo, and should be looked upon as diff side of the same coin.

Funny... at :45, that was a Star Wars sound effect. They must not have had the movie completed at the time.

I don't understand why they did two movies after next-gen aired?
bumtownv2 1 year ago
Because the TNG crew hadn't been established yet whereas there was a guaranteed audience of people who would pay the price of a cinema ticket to see the TOS crew in a movie.
80smusicfanNO1 1 year ago
Ah, it just seems strange to me because it's set before TNG while running at the same time.

All i can say about this amazing movie is :) =A= STAR TREK FOREVER =A=

Note: Does anyone else notice the Star Wars blaster sounds when the Enterprise and Bird of Prey fire?

This movie rocks.
