  • you know whats crazy too, he still had more in him. im guessing a 950 squat, 545 bench, and 840 deadlift. crazy he still got it :D

  • so much power

  • i think that guy meant king

  • I thought he was gonna go for another one benching!! lol

  • was 519 his best shirted bench? i thought he had 550 raw in him

  • his best meeting bench was 519 suited? i thought he had 550 raw?

  • DOWN! DOWN!

Ed Coan: Shut Up, motherfucker! Let me enjoy the moment!

  • my greatest regret as a powerlifter is that i never got a chance to see him lift in person.

  • THE MAN AND LEGEND

  • seems like wide grip on bench is that legal..? that squat bar is looong

  • @fukidomev2 That's not a wide bench grip at all. Not sure what you're looking at.

  • his squats are incredible, AND, he is walking 1000lbs ++++ will never be done again.

  • @ger1mon It's still being done.

  • @ger1mon It happen's all the time in Russia:D But no one at Coan's light bw ofc.

  • If his squat was any deeper his ass would be kissing the back of his knees haha

  • Ed Coan, the best there is, was and will ever be...

  • Currently taking your head off of the bench, is ok to do.

  • I dont get it Coan is a living legend... he has nothing left to prove who gives a shit if he lifted his head... go check his records and remember he didnt have the gear we have today...

  • true powerlifting....

  • this is crazy

  • ed coan is the man

  • What for his bench is so much behind his other lifts..?

    just curious

  • It's normal.

The posterior chain (all the muscles used for squatting and deadlifting) is much stronger than the muscles of the shoulder girdle.

If someone's bench is near their squat and deadlift , then that person has disproportionately weak legs.

  • greatest powerlifter to ever compete.

  • yeah ed is getting old it his prime he was a beast. even how old he is he is still a god at powerlifting.

  • I compete at a pretty high level myself -- in fact, in the same class as Ed did -- and I'm nowhere near this level of performance. It's truly an inspiration.

  • awesome! looked like he was good for more on the bench

  • Is God

  • the most impressive thing to me that everyone overlooks is that ed was squatting 1000+ when you had to walk out of the rack. Now with the mono-lift they just unrack and squat

  • wow... never thought of that.

  • Ed is a beast!

  • Ed is the man...

  • Ed is a freak. Period.

  • 2. The lifter must lie on his back with shoulders and buttocks in contact with the flat

bench surface. His hands may grip the bar with a "thumbs around" grip, thumbless

grip or reverse grip as long as the rings on the bar are covered. You may not grip

outside the 81cm mark. His shoes must be flat on the floor. This position shall be

maintained throughout the attempt. The head may raise during the lift.

  • what was his total in his prime?

  • 2463.7lbs (1117.5kgs) in 1998 at 110kg (240lbs). Thats insane considering he did the dead raw, and his squat and bench was done using single ply gear a lot less advanced than gear today (Hed add another 100kg,220lbs if he used some of the gear people used today, because he was better than the top Super Heavyweights at the time).

  • For what it's worth, the deadlift is usually done raw. Wearing a squat suit or deadlift suit while deadlifting does not give you much. I've done with suit and without. The weight is still the same...

And yes, Ed is one of the best lifters of all time...

  • class man

  • cool looks like he didn't lockout the deadlift and your head isnt suposed to leave the bench what gimped rules does that contest have????

  • Does USPF have a rule against a slight head raise?

As far as the deadlift goes, he locked out his second attempt (same weight as the 3rd attempt in the video) but got two reds for some unexplainable reason. The 3rd was slightly less locked out but was still a good lift. I didn't necessarily think the judging was top notch at that meet.

  • I had to look it up:

The head may raise during the lift."

  • But it all depends what federation you are in, USAPL you cannot lift your head or use a thumbless grip

  • Some say Chuck Vogelpohl is in Ed's class, but Coan's in a class by himself..No way Vogelpohl could squat over 950@220 in single ply, while walking the weight out..

  • agreed. Chuck V is THE MAN, but Ed Coan is THE LEGEND. Some of Ed's feats will probably never be equaled in our lifetime, such as his 901@220 deadlift, or his 2408@220 total, both which were in SINGLE PLY. You can't compare the two.

  • wow

  • there is absoltely no doubt at all that coan is p4p the greatest p/lifter of all time. why??? he leaves us no doubts at all about any of his lifts, yet they are still freaky as hell. for example, just take a look at the squat on this clip, you can see very clearly that he gets the depth and he powers right through it.

  • ed coan the living legend !

  • "Regardless what anyone thinks"...I hear ya. eeven the best powerlifters admit he is the best ever. He ruled for 2 decades+. 901 dl in a singlet after world reord subtotal, at 220 lbs. According to 1000 lbs SHW equipped deadlifter bolton "Ed Coan is in his own galaxy".

  • THE BEST EVER!!

  • Yes he is.

  • Wow! Ed Coan, after all of these years you're still doing it. I always admired this guy! God Bless!

  • Ed, what can you say, fooking legend and all round good bloke. Truly set the milestones and the aura all powerlifters would like to have surround them.

  • No idea about Coan's training. You might try some of his training partners at Quads gym in Chicago. Cartwright keeps a log on Diablo Barbell's website (google it), Diablo is a powerlifting gym about an hour from ours (Super Training Gym). Our gym doesn't have a website as yet.

  • Coan's training program or Cartwright's?

  • It was great. Even though he was competing he was very calm and very generous with his time. I was there with my teammate Scott Cartwright. Ed spent about 20 minutes talking to us the night before the meet and then off and on all day during the meet. Just an exceptional guy. Very focused when approaching the platform.

  • You're welcome. Glad I could do it.

  • biceps....ornaments on a christmas tree.

Ed...the great ones never burn out, they just fade away.

  • Farewell to the Iron Warrior! Hell of a way to go out-

  • I had the honor of seeing Ed squat 1019 several years ago. It was deep enough in any fed. You will be missed Ed.

  • The end of an Era - the best powerlifter of all time.

  • Ed was the real Powerlifting not a cheating WPO lifter

without deep squats or correct Benching. All the best for the future Ed!

  • youre brillian Ed Coan, the best powerlifter of all time

  • when he benches he has no arch.that bar has a long way to go.his training is so basic to.nothing fancy just heavy weights as the contest draws closer.i am going to miss those guys like him.kirk karwoski ed coan ect.

  • Fantastic Ed!

Congrats on a great career. I'm already excited to see your comeback. :-)

  • awesome lifting, ed coan what a legend.
