  • I often see Scotch Bonnets in the supermarket, but sometimes they list them as Habaneros... what is the difference in heat and/or taste between Scotch Bonnet and Habanero and can you really tell the difference by looking at them???

  • Just tried half a Scotch Bonnet - and you're right: it is really fruity at first but then this pretty intense and long-lasting heat sets in. Lovely! Can't wait to add one of these (de-seeded) to my next Chipotle-chili-dish. May add some fresh notes to the smokey flavour.

    I have some chillies growing at home that are supposed to be mild.

    Have eaten scotch bonnet and many other chillies but these babies are lethal.

    Cooked one tiny chilli yesterday in large kitchen diner and wife and I ended up coughing with eyes streaming and had to open doors and windows

    Have managed to eat one with some cheese to calm it down

  • The Scotch Bonnet is my favorite chili, its very versitle, its not just HOT if u de seed it (and remove all the white flesh as this si where the heat actually is not in the seeds) its a very very fruit chili, its main use in the caribean is to flavor rather than add heat, i tend to boil them up with rice. Lovly ....i wouldnt eat one whole though !!

  • the best thing to stop the burn with any chilli is ..Mango nectar not juice nectar give that a try and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds before you swallow and you will see what i mean

  • @mongoose301 Scotch Bonnet and Habanero chillis are reportedly some of the few that do not cause indigestion or burning on the way out (I don't know if this is dependant on whether they are ingested cooked or fresh)

  • @mongoose301 You'll have to trust me on this but..... Throat spray, the type when you have a sore throat. Aiming takes a little practice but it really really works. Also the usual aloe vera toilet roll in the fridge the night before.

  • I find this like the birdseye chilli just on a lareger heat scale. All heat no flavour but I did only try a little bit of one.

  • Do you test hot sauces? If you ever get a chance go to Pepper Palace in Gatlinburg Tennessee. They used to have a sauce called Cades Cove. It is made with Scotch Bonnet peppers, and is very thick. In fact, you can see the seeds floating in it. It's very hot. You should try it.

  • The local kebab house does a challenge with these, and the owner gave me one to much on for some free food.

    My mouth burnt for hours I tell you. Never felt anything like it before. Probably the most pain my mouth has ever felt, and my ring the day after felt like it was on fire.

  • I like those Scotch Bonnet, I find when you first bite into them it's like a little explosion of heat in your mouth. You can feel the heat spray off when you bite into it.

  • shit yes they are Hot, but great flavour. my fav thing to do with them is chop up 3 and put in cup cake mix, try it Awesome..

    milk is best, i don't drink milk i do the Soy thing and thats fairly useless still works though,, and sip it, don't gulp or may heave.. yoghurt is really good to, check out some indian side dish recipes,, some cucumber yoghurt with ya Hot stuff goes well

  • That chili wasn't quite at its peak , needs to go a few shades darker, and be a little less crisp, then you'll know it lol

  • aw well, next season Safi bonnets, Burkina , Costa Rican, so will get Crispy ;)

    these,, chop into lil pieces and put in a Cake mix :-) Outstanding.

  • Costa Rican Scotch Bonnet was actually somewhat disappointin. I actually had one of those while at Costa Rica, and it didn't seem to match up (in terms of heat) to the traditional Jamaican ones.

  • boo, oh well ill give it a go when grows, but like the yellow to the red hab, lot of diff but taste is ok, how's the costa for taste ?

  • In fact, they did taste similar to the traditional Scotch Bonnet, but not as pungent. However, it was mostly the heat itself which you will notice - it's not on the same "AHH WTH" level of the Jamaican ones, even though they're still HOT. I would estimate that the Costa Rican Scotch Bonnets have a heat range between 80 000 to 200 000 Scoville at the most, because we DO know that some peppers in the batch can be hotter than others. But after tryin 5 of em, I felt that it was enough to conclude.

  • Hi you are totally insane in a fun sort of way. I lived 15 years in the Caribbean and even though everyone there is used to the stuff, never anyone would be insane enough to do what you are doing. Very fun though!!

    just made jamacian jerk, so I had to buy some scotch Bonnet's.

    Just eat one fresh and they have such an unusual taste - almost smokey, fruity...

    really nice.

    my fav use for them (cause of that taste) is to chop into tiny bits and add to cake mix, but instead of a big cake tin to coook in,,i use muffin pans and make like scotch bonnet Cup cakes, they freeze good too...

    so if get some more , try that

    (this 1, was posted on my channel comments) making a smoothie, add in a bonnet or 2 as blending,, i havent tried yet, but sounds great..

  • can be many various reasons,where grown, if picked early then riped, seed stock, water amount fed, if store bought mass produced / crosspollinated, ive had incrdible hot jalapenos. did a Paper lantern habanero the other day that wasn't hot so waiting on other plants to see if same. it is a real dissapointment too, i know that feeling well.

    but it is fun.

  • yup, grow them all and then Take pics with my Nokia Mobile phone, then find the Biggest/Ripest 1 and have a go, see what it does.

    i won't use other peoples Pics, as they arnt my plants, and thats why i do this, every time i read bout chilli types i get "fruity and hot" WTF is that, so this way people Know EXACTLY what this variety does/tastes like when they watch.
