  • Great vid! You are a very good speaker

  • Thanks for making the video, learnd something new about my 7D.

  • hi.i find that video film with 7d have quite big file size..like 1gb for 5mins or so..any solution for that? i am quite new with dslr..

  • Excellent videos dude. I have 7D, trying to learn how to use the bloody thing while looking after our baby. Getting some great shots now though. Kudos to you!

  • Thank you so much!

  • how to i get 60fps? i can only use 50fps?

  • I have a 5d Mark2. What I would like to know is why do you lower the contrast and sharpness in the picture style settings? All I end up with is blurry and pale-looking footage. Trying to grade this footage on a video editor only adds artifacts and more block-noise.

So what is wrong with setting it to high sharpness and contrast in the camera? Can someone help?

  • Thanks for the tutorial! One thing is not clear to me though: you said to set the mode on 'manual' before going to the 'Picture Style Editor' and setting the picture style. I've done that but when I go to shoot video (ie in video mode) I noticed that the User Def.s in Picture Style are not the same as those in camera mode (they're as per original presets). Am I missing something? forgot to mention that I have a canon 60D though — don’t know if that makes a difference?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi! Please tell me why you have Highlight Priority to ENABLE. And why is it good for videos. Thanx!

  • kratos

  • Sorry for asking, but what has happened to your face?

  • @chessinfantry - you're a prick

  • Awesome, thanks!

  • Very informative.. Thanks man !!

  • Really need your help here. the 60D video is format MVi - problem I can't seem to get video to upload to youtube, it's not being seen by google docs, I can't convert it at all. It will play in quicktime but thats all. Windows media player won't play it. Please help

  • @johnstownwildfire premier pro is the answer

  • Hey just wanted to say I LOOOVE your videos...Just ordered this camera today so excited

  • If I record on the Canon 7D @ 1080p 24p. Should I edit in 24p? Also Vegas 10 edits mov. files just fine. What's the advantage of converting files with cineform neoscene prior to editing?

  • Senor Eyepatch, is the 7D (or 60D) much better than say, a Nikon D3100 or 5100 for Video shooting? (other than the rolling shutter problems with the NIkons)

Lots of focusing noise on both Nikons.

-I do plan on using mostly Autofocus, underwater.

    Love your tutorials and Hacks!

  • great videos, all of them, i´ve got a question, i have a 7d, and i know it has a track focus system, but my manual is in chinese, your videos are real clear, can you explain me how this work?? thanks alot!!

  • thats gonna be my next DSLR Camera

  • Hi eyepatch, Im a great fan of your work. Maybe this question has been asked lot's of times, you see, I have a project Im going to start in a couple days, basically is a 60 sec clip, I've been experimenting with both 24fps 1080p and 60fps 1080 as well, I like the film look of the 24fps, but I need to include a 7 second clip in slow motion, wich looks with motion blur after adjusting the playback in sony vegas for about .500 the framerate, what would you recommend me to get the best result??....

  • @aronchas

Also, if i use 60 fps 1080p Do I need to render out at 24.00 or 23.9... fps??? Sorry for the bunch of stupid questions, but I would like to achieve the best result, thank you very much for your kndly help! you rock

  • Really appreciate this video! Helped me out getting started with the video aspect of the 7D. The greatest camera that I've ever owned! Keep up the good work. Subscribed to your channel too:)

  • Thanks for posting this dude, you helped me with a lot of your video's xD

  • You are awesome

  • Hi my friend, am new with the 7D I have a CF CARD 16GB SANDISK 400x, and when i record video 720p there are moments when the video stops recording at 4 second and you see a bar at the corner of the LCD, i read the manual and saids the it happens when you have a slow CF CARD but the one i have is fast. can you comment about it

  • @AchtungPakhtoon there's no doubt that that distance within what is semi expert and pro is little nowadays. d7000 is all many of us need. visit... freedslr . c0m change 0 with o and get a way to win a new Nikon D7000

  • Hey, I just noticed that you have the saturation set to -2. Do not change the setting, keep it at 0 because you lose the color information if you lower it in camera. If you want to desaturate, do it in post. This gives you more room to grade your footage.

  • question: is there any possibility while recording a movie and having the camera connect to a pc that the movie files are stored on the computer's harddrive, rather than on the camera's card?

  • do you know any good video editors for this cam?

  • how do you keep it autofocusing (without having to keep pressing the AF-ON button)? It doesn't matter what setting I have (One Shot / AI Focus / AI Servo), it won't autofocus, unless you press either the AF-ON or shutter release half way.

  • how could you insert link on your YouTube video I don't know how - could you please teach us how could it be done - YouTube don't allow that to everybody or most of us we don't know how so if it is available for every body let us know or we have to pay to get to do it may be you are a YouTube director so you work inside YouTube so you can and we can't or I m wrong so which is the true there are lot of mystery inside YouTube one is that and another some director get to have 500.000 vis a day

  • Once you do all these settings, can you save them & go back and forth from video to still shots?

  • does the 7d auto focus during the video or do you have to focus at the beginning and just deal with it?????????????????? please anyone

  • How does the video from the 7D look when projected on a big screen at 1080p?

  • @ashare06 Go watch Black Swan's Subway scenes.

  • @eyepatchentertainmen

Those were done indeed with a Canon 7D...but with big external lenses!!! not at all comparable with the normal lens...

  • @eyepatchentertainmen

black swan subwayscene was shot with a 7D ?!?!?!?!

  • what would you recommend to record sound when shooting with the 7d?

  • @PsykoProduction Hi, I'm not the person in the tutorials but I shoot with 7d. For sound check out the H4N Zoom Handy Recorder . Tons of vids on you tube about it. I love it, it's fantastic. Or if you are really on a budget a Rode Mic. Hope this helps :) Paulina

  • Hi. I put all the settings you suggested for shooting in movie mode and it seems really grainy. Is it the low lighting maybe. I'm filming a music video with lots of night shots and stage lights. What are the best settings for that? Thanks and your videos have helped me out soooo much!!!

  • hey do these cameras have custom presets for manuel white white balnce you can set like video cameras like vx1000

  • @MrJfergs The 7D has both presets, a custom mode, and a mode that allows you to input your own color temperature.

  • Dude, you rock!!! So helpful. thanks!

  • Bought a 7d a few months back - your tutorials have been incredibly helpful. Thanks. Quick question: I live in a PAL region, so if I shoot something at 60p for slow motion (which means switching to the camera's NTSC format) does it matter as long as I render the end result as a 24p project? Or do I have to stick with 50p in the PAL format?

  • Ok so I've decided on the 7D for my body, but I'm having a tough time deciding on lenses to start out with. I want to use it mainly for videography in low light so I was thinking the Sigma 30mm and the Canon 17-55m IS as starter lenses.

Do you believe those to be good choices or would you recommend others for video?

  • Does the 7d has an automatic focus while filming?

  • how do u get these settings with t2i cause i couldnt find the custom function

  • do you think these settings will also be good for the 60d ???

  • Hey. First of all. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. Now. I have just bought a t2i and love it. Have set it up as told in this tutorial. However. When i shoot video in daylight the footage is hopelessly bright. I know its a newbee question but maybe you will help. I use the kit lense so it has a largest F of 3.5. How do i keep a low F, etc.. What am i doing wrong. Regars from Denmark,

  • @gobbel600 thanks :) If you want to keep the F-stop wide open, you need to use ND filters to cut the light going to the sensor

  • @eyepatchentertainmen no problem. Not many easy understandable tutorial. Well ND filters will be ordered. So everyone having a shallow DOF in daylight use these? Take care :-)

  • @eyepatchentertainmen have ordered a fader nd from LCW. Maybe you should do a tutorial on this one or other ND filters. I think its important info. Well maybe im the only one LOL, anyway. Thanks again.

  • @eyepatchentertainmen what happent to your head? if it´s okay i ask

  • @gobbel600 using his tutorial how did u get to the custom function that hes talkin about at 1:07

  • @gobbel600

Just use ND Filter in bright light.

  • @gobbel600 to decrease the brightness, put the exposure down manually (increases shutter speed of video). Make sure you're on manual mode. cheers.

  • great video...but I'm hasking to myself...what happened to your face..? just curious...dnt take it rong....

  • great video...but I'm hasking my self...what happened to your face..? just curious...dnt take it rong....

  • @Orbe01 totally inappropriate question.

  • Can someone please answer this question. If I set my 7D to shoot picture in just raw mode, So is that means when I shoot movies it will be in raw or mpeg?? (mpeg is for movies and jpeg is for picture isn't it??)

  • @ClankyRochet There are no DSLRs currently that can shoot video in RAW. The 7D shoots H.264 which is mpeg 4.

  • do you get many comments about your face? because if you do those cunts are insensitive.

  • Got my canon 7d today =)

  • thanks great tutorial!

  • Great videos, turning down the sharpness and contrast really reduced noise in low light.

I'm still struggling with with shutter speed and frame rate... do you have a tutorial this? I picked up a Sigma 30mm f1.4 which has been great in very little low light, at f1.4 at ISO 320 or 640... I've been using 30fps at 1/30th, for some reason 24fps at 1/30th seems choppy? How is shutter speed and fps REALLY related? I know at 24fps I should be using 1/50th, but it's too dark.

  • Thank you for the lessons! They help a lot!

Just one question thought, when you finish editing the footage in Sony Vegas, what format do you export it as? I've tried several formats that yielded less than great results because they degraded the original quality of the .MOV files and kinda ruined the point of full HD.

    Again, thank you. :)

  • Thanks for this video dude. I have a 50 mm 1.8 but when I shoot indoors in available light, it gives noise. Even I don't go beyond 300-400 ISO with 60-80 shutter speed!!! can you plz help how can I get rid of the noise?

  • thanks for posting these videos! they are great!

  • Excellent videos, I just got my 7D, and its strictly for shooting video. I followed your instructions for seting up movie mode. But, I want to understand this right. Your settings are for outdoor shots, or with alot of light. Now, what about night, or low light shooting? and do I still have tone enable on in low light shots?

  • what about aperture and shutter speed settings?

  • @rolceron when shooting 25 fps, i always go for 1/50 in shutter, and 1/100 when shooting 50 fps. double frame rate = double shutter :-)

  • thanks

  • What is the name of the song in the background? I really like it. Thanks!

  • very nice, tho.. i have a question.. if i get a canon 7d.. and gonna record in HD etc.. do you think i need a supercomputer to edit it with? or does a 1500 euros laptop go? cause i get laggy videos with my kodak playsport.. in programs such as Sony Vegas..

  • @Laaksoz Adobe Premiere is the way forward. :)

  • DO NOT USE Highlight tone priority. Read the forums a lot of issues with it. MORE NOISE. A lot more noise wide open on low ISO even on 200 ISO the noise is too much. Turn it off

  • @KypHeM Indoors, you are correct. But if you are in a situation where you are shooting in 12+ stops of uncontrolled light, enabling HTP will give more dynamic range with slightly more gain. Since most people shoot outdoors, kids, backyard, etc HTP can be a help.

  • @eyepatchentertainmen I see, I will try it outdoors.

  • @KypHeM which is the best mode then?

  • Comment removed

  • this was tremendous help. what would 7D users do without your insight...

  • what aboiut your shutter speed and f-stop?

  • thanks, I can't wait to try these setting this weekend. I've been fighting with using the camera in auto.....lol and nothing in manual mode seemed to work for me. so again thank you!

  • 7D can do zoom has it is recording?

  • Thanks for making the video, very helpful for a novice like myself.

Question, can a canon video lens be mounted on a Canon D7. i have a canon hd video lens 20x zoom xl 5.4-108 lens from a canon 3ccd hd canon video camera.

If yes, is there a lens adaptor to make the lens fit on the D7?

Is there any advantage in doing this?

    Cheers Tommy

  • You made mention of setting recommended by Stu @ pro loss or something like that. Do you have a link for that? Thanks, I have subscribed to your great tutorials.

  • Excellent tutorials, man. Thanx!

  • Whgat is the best settings for night shots, i have a 50mm 1.8 and i get grain at 200 iso.

  • Thanks so much - was having a hard time figuring out how to cut down the noise in low light, and this worked great!

  • Great stuff! Thanks for putting in the time to make these videos. Much appreciated.

  • So, why turn sharpness and contrast off?

and why lower the saturation down?

    whats the point?

And the picture style, neutral looks like it looses its colours, why not regular/normal?

  • Does the "picture style settings" effect the still shots taken while videoing ...or are they recorded in default settings?

    Thanks

  • Just picked up the T2i. I'm experimenting with the various video settings. Do you know how your settings compare with Marvels Film Cine-gamma S-Curve v 1.2 curvature settings?

Love your videos. They are my first stop for 7D / T2i research.

    Cheers,

    --- J

  • Your videos are very helpful for people who own (or want to own) a 7D.

I have a question about contrast. I noticed in this video around 2:45 that there is a dark reflection of your face in the viewfinder, and it has this sort of pixelated look to it. I'm guessing it comes from compression done by YouTube, but it could be the camera, I guess.

Do you know where that comes from?

I look forward to your next video.

  • Thank you for sharing, your videos are excellent.

  • Yeah the Canon 7d is great... We shot our short film with it...

  • I like Your tutorial !

  • Thanks for all the great info! I've been filming with the highlight tone priority enabled, and it helps in good light, but is it causing more noise in lowlight?

Am I crazy in thinking that? Have you noticed anything similar? Thanks :)

  • Nice tutorials. Very helpful. Cheers!

  • I just wanted to say that I've really been enjoying your videos. I'm learning a great deal. I just ordered the 7d and the delivery date is tomorrow so I've been watching your videos to learn so I can hit the ground running tomorrow.

    Thanks!

  • How long can you shoot for? Can Final cut express handle 24 fps? I also own Pinnacle Version 12 of that helps. Thinking of buying a canon xha1 but this looks better!

  • does anyone know the settings to put on Final Cut Pro so that the footage doesn't have a glitch?

  • Great tutorials. This is probably a stupid question but when you change the USer Def 1 settings to prep the 7D for video, does this affect how you shoot when just taking RAW stills ?

Do i need to set my 7D BACK to a normal picture style once I've finished in movie mode ? Little confused. Thanks for any help.

  • Yes, you should set a picture style for taking photos and one for video. You dont want to use these settings for photos. It should not affect the photos if you are shooting raw though.

  • Awesome tips, I just got my blower L bracket in the mail yesterday too... works great for camera shake like you said!

I was in Disneyland over the weekend and finally started using manual focus at night with a 50mm 1.4... ahh the world of bokeh has opened for me :)

One question I have though... When I don't need artistic shots and just want to follow moving targets, it's difficult to constantly manual focus. Is there a setting to auto focus while videoing by depressing the shutter halfway?

  • So do you think the 7D is a better video camera than the 5D? I'm mainly thinking about the extra steps to conform the video with audio at 29.97 fps.

  • Great video! I have a couple quick Qs....a) How much 1080p/24p footage typically fits on a 8GB compact flash card? and b) Can the 7D record 1080p straight to a connected computer (Mac in my case)?

  • about 20 minutes and it will not connect to the computer and dump simultaneously with recording

  • awesome help. I just got my 7D the other day and I am a total noob, it is my first camera. well, I sis have the XL1s but thats a bit different.

I cant wait to learn, your video is a great help. its late, so i dont have a chance right now to check the others

  • Very helpful series. Thanks much for sharing!!

  • When I press the picture style editor button, my screen looks different. Icons look smaller. Is the firmware on your 7D updated? Thanks

  • @ Curtiss:

I own a 7D and yes you'll need a reasonably fast computer to edit the .MOV files.

  • Do you need a fast computer to edit .MOV files like you do with AVCHD? :]

  • you need to convert the files to an i-frame codec so you can edit easily, add effect, multilayers etc...

Then it will ask less less power. But even on fast computers h264 is not an editing codec.

    Just convert and edit.

  • Great tutorial - I just KNEW I'd eventually hit pay dirt that shares many how-to tips (even if it is 3:57AM...) I also enjoyed your thoughts on lens - many thanks.

    Michael

  • If I can't use any ISO under 200 because of Highlighting priority do you lose a lot of quality? I started as a photograher and try never to get out of 100 to 200 that's why I ask.

  • With Digic IV some argue that ISO 400 gives better images than ISO 100. In all cases, I think you could easily go up to 1600 with these cameras.

  • Thanks for the info. Should you use Highlight tone priority for stills as well. Thanks

  • It works well for JPEGs in bright sunlight.

  • @tpelts No! this is ALL about video mode

  • I think its great that you share your knowledge!

  • this set-up is for people who are going to do heavy post work with their footage. what kind of set-up do you suggest for someone who will not be doing any grading and is looking for the best results right out of the camera?

  • I recommend the same settings with just a little more contrast. split the difference from the default

  • You need to be more enthusiastic when you do this stuff.. I suffer from passive enthusiasm too, hehe.

  • True. I do these at like 4AM every time. lol

  • Seems like the only time we have left in the day. lol.
