I still think that if Paul McCartney had fired John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison and then toured with three newbies and his wife Linda, some people would have a problem with Paul trying to pass them off as "The Beatles". Recall that Paul DID start a new band and called it "Wings".

I agree, the "new" song is great! But the picture of the "old" band is misleading. James Mercer fired the entire band when he recorded Broken Bells. Then he fired that entire band and formed "the Shins" with 4 new people. None of the new "Shins" band members had anything to do with the old "Shins" success.

@fsemple He did not fire the band to do Broken Bells, Broken Bells was a side project. And aside from himself and Brian Burton, the members of that band were just for touring. As for the other members of the Shins, I wouldn't credit them with too much for their success. James is the songwriter and there is no doubt this is his band.

@fsemple Yeah man, I kind of agree. No doubt it is Mercers band, but overall I just think it's lame still going as the Shins. I know artist sounds mature, but this doesn't feel like the Shins to me. They can still be called the Shins, but it'll be hard for me to do it.

@fsemple You should check your facts on this...James did not "fire" the band. He and Brian did Broken Bells together as a side project. When James decided to make this album, the other members of the original band were doing other things and not on board with it. Maybe they will be in the future...who knows. I would like to see him with the original members of the band....they were amazing together but, James is the one writing the songs and this song is really good.
