Creating a convincing universe is good, then you have to make it interesting while staying trueto the universe you've created. Much harder, but if you do it well, it propels your film to art instead of fodder.

HR Giger's creature has never been equalled. Moebius' and Ron Cobb's designs for the ship and the general grungy industrialness of it added to the realism. As a result, Scott could get naturalistic performances from the actors. I don't think there's been a film in this genre to touch it since...

I gotta agree. The creature is what elevated this thing, so that everybody else wouldn't look like they were in a 2nd rate film.
Great director, great actors. Great writing.
But it's the CREATURE that scared audiences into believing in this universe.
