Oh alas! We're just back from Tokyo and probably could have found somewhere if we'd known about it. Ah well, if we're ever in japan at year end, again...
@dollish There are a few temples/shrines that do it at the end of year / beginning of the year. This one was for a club. They get together and do it for their club members and families.
I think that hammer is the hardest thing to use. You get SO tired in such a short time. In Japan, they have a guy putting water on the mochi between every pounding.
@uinkii Ya...there was a guy turning the mochi and putting water on it too...but instead of every single time it was after a few pounds....you know...safety reasons. LoL.
We pounded mochi this past Monday. I'm not allowed to actually pound anything because I have horrible aim and may hurt someone. XD But I love putting candy in the mochi. We usually have peanut butter, Nutella, chocolate chips, marshmallows, M&Ms, Oreos, and all kinds of stuff. It's probably a good thing I have them pound a batch only for me. LoL. Happy New Year!

Awesome. It's fun to watch mochi-tsuki in a warm place. I am used to seeing mochi pounding outside in the cold where everybody is in jackets. haha.
