Giving him the business is a slang term meaning someone is punching or kicking someone else. In football, that term could be used when the ball carrier has been tackled and after being tackled is punched or kicked or elbowed by one or more of the defensive players.

  • @xombeecao The origin of this term is from former referee Ben Dreith who used this unique explanation of a personal foul penalty during a 1986 game between the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. After the Jets' Mark Gastineau tackled Bills quarterback Jim Kelly to the ground and started to repeatedly punch him in the head, Dreith announced to the crowd:

"Number 99 of the defense, after tackling the quarterback, was giving him the business down there"

  • LMBO TOO FUNNY

  • Good one

  • Youtube "Penaly on Everyone!". They also mentions "doing the business" during this COWBOYS vs TITANS (i think..) game.

  • EVERYONE, I was suggested here by watching THIS video that mentions "giving him the business."

  • wat is the buisness

  • @TooMessedUpForYou low blow, assault of the testicles.

  • I like how NUMBER 69 WAS GIVING HIM THE BUSINESS LOL

  • He's not the first referee to make that call. The classic call of NFL Referee Ben Dreith, who informed us all that a New York Jets defensive lineman was "giving him the business down there" after a hit on Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly in 1986.

  • @MultisportOfficial The NY Jets defensive lineman was Marty Lyons.

  • @joclance22: Yup, and I believe Dreith reported the wrong player in the process.
