Oh dear Oh dear...and just where do you think Americans copied the steps for their square dancing from? I sometimes wonder???? .....We Scots possibly copied them from the ancient Basque Greeks and Vikings..What the heck are Ceilidh dances???? A ceilidh is a gathering Ouch Aye.. the dancing can get very wild and dangerous!! Slainte!!
Careful! Scottish Country Dancing is something quite different from ceilidh dancing. At a ceilidh, the aim is to have as much fun as possible whether or not you get all the steps right all the time. In Scottish Country Dancing, if you deviate from the strait and narrow, you are likely to incur the wrath of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society! We've played for both types and I know which I prefer!!
This is the first video I have seen that actually looks like a hielund wedding. Hoots, and booze and sweat and tears. None of thon sterile fat wifie singing my Love is but a Lassie Yet. Reminds older watchers of the days when the Camerons, Gordons, Seaforth etc. used to have the parties. ("Are ya dancin'" "Are ya askin" hahaha) Good stuff. Oh and the Ceilidh is not the dancing it is the Gathering its-self usually in a Byre. (barn) Salan-cha vah (phonetic)
I love Scottish dancing - my husband and I once took lessons after we went to a Scottish wedding and felt very foolish being the only persons there who couldn't do the steps
If it's not called céilidh what is the actual dance called please? I'm supposed to be trying this out in two weeks. Looks fun.

Seeing this video, I think "I wish I could've been there". I don't see much of this in the US. I've got to travel to Scotland sometime.
