Helen Kane is an absolute doll. She was a wonderful little comedian with a sweet little angelic voice.. God rest her soul. Thanks for playing this. I love my gramophone... it's just so difficult to find records for it... have any websites where I could order songs this old?
She was no Vaughan de Leith nor even Ruth Etting.Just another marketing product of very little vocal talent.Better were a host of others such as Marion Harris,Connie Boswell,Lee Wiley,Maxine Sullivan etc.Best part was that they could even sing.
Hmm, I guess I could hear some artificial Britney Spears-y quality to her singing if I wanted to, but still; she had an absolutely great sense of timing and really know how to "perform" and "act out" a song. She was a master of the sexy double entendre and makes everything she sings all her own. Plus, her music always put a really big smile on my face. So, I'd give her more credit than you, but Connie Boswell she ain't.
Thank you for not posting a nasty rebuke.I tend to overkill in my statements, and can be unkind at best.Anything or one that puts a smile on ones face is great if for that alone.Connie Boswell and Lee Wiley etc.were of a far different style of singing, and for me were far more smile inducing.
Boswell may arguably have been the best ever!In this I'm not comparing Ella,Sarah etc. They of course are in a different category (almost)entirely.Thank you for your highly civilized response to my opinionated views.
@wininboy In my opinion what makes a record memorable is a unique combination of singer and song and I dont think anybody sang this song better than her-she made it her own with her special delivery and thats why we are still admiring her after all these years Great and thanks
futurebiblehero-There is absolutely nothing that I find endearing about her voice, style or anything else about her. Anette Henshaw or Ruth Etting were by far her superior. Go to merrihew or Mickey Clarke or one of the posters. If not, then get back to me and I shall make a list of them for you.I'm going away for a few days, and am very pressed with that,or I'd gladly do it now.Jane Green comes to mind.
For years, I've had this mental picture of her, listening to her records. It didn't agree with the movies you see of her on this site, unfortunately. ;-)
One day - somebody pointed Helen out to me. By that time she was a little (and I mean LITTLE) old lady. Sometimes, theater of the mind is the best theater.
she was a sweetheart...now she's lost in time...

She's AMAZING! You cant compare a high pitched female from the 20's with a deep voiced male from the 40-50s, by the way.

Helen had talent, sinatra had none... I don't like football/baseball/rugby either....

As far as excellent phrasing . . . she's up there with Frank Sinatra.

I'm not one to be nasty and you obviously know what you are talking about.
(I guess you don't really like Annette Hanshaw either?)

That comparison doesn't exactly seem fair. That's like saying Tiny Tim was a hack because he wasn't Frank Sinatra.

Ah yes. The "Boo-boopee-doop Girl."
I never knew her but she went to my church in Jackson Heights, NY. Famous for "I Wanna' be Loved by You." that's her classic contribution
