Yes, snowmakers are expensive and the temperature has to be cold enough or it doesn't work. I just use plastic SantaSnow when there's not enough white in my backyard. Looks plenty real and it's cheap.
Average equipment price will run about $600. Plus setting it up takes plenty of labor and it has to be cold enough to work (Floridians are out of luck). But is does produce real snow.

um.. snowathome snow machines, (as the sg5 go for about 400-1200 dollars now so you don't really have to bee rich.
