  • your video was extremely helpful to me! thank you for making this video.

  • I LOVE this! I'm trying to make a Kerrigan costume from Starcraft, and I would much prefer to do this than to pay for retractable wings online...

  • Once your parrot is out of the way... Hahaha love it

  • As a costumer it killed me seeing you punch the wing. Pretty cool though.

  • DUCK TAPE!!!! Hahaha I about died!!

  • I've gotten a bit further along with my wings, & I've got another few questions: first, for a single backplate, is acrylic a good base, & if so, how big? Second, what are the design changes for hand-loops rather than foot loops?

  • DUCT TAPE!

  • Great video, I've been trying to make wings for Flanre Scarlet (Video Game) that flop (they go side ways instead of back) and retract so I can go through doors and crowds x.x;; and this was a great start thanks :3!

One question though, is it possible to make wings where the string is inside the pvc pipe, and a way to anchor the position? If so any tutorials/ideas you know about xD?

  • You`ve probably been asked this a bunch of times, but will this work for feathered wings as well?

  • You have a bitch face!

  • Can you please give me the dimensions & proper names of all the supplies? My father (who is an engineer) was baffled by how vague everything was, especially with the eyelets & screws. I ended up getting the PVC pipe at a hardware store, & some screws that may be the right size, but I'd just like to double-check everything.

  • @Roketto Baffle him back: One size does not fit all because people are not manufactured. If we gave you the lengths that worked on Ben and you were smaller they would not fit, they would drag on the ground and you would be unable to make them move. If you were larger they might look stupid on you--even the pipe diameter can be variable. So, this video is not a blueprint, but a concept. Wearable props require being totally customized to the wearer. Check the reference PDF for eyelet placement.

  • @gryphern

Ah, thank you. I didn't mean to sound rude, but my Dad was just kind of frustrated that nothing was concrete. I said pretty much what you explained; that one size doesn't fit all, so I guess I need to just go eye everything as far as what length of screws, etc. I'm pretty small, btw, so mine probably be VERY large in proportion to my body.

  • will it make u fly?? :D

  • how long do you make this?

  • could you make one for moving angel wings?

  • XD DUCT TAPE!, to avoid them coming loose over time....

  • If I wanted to get these wings as close to my back as possible what would the measurements for the notch be? Also, do you know if it is possible to get the wings to open to the side or do they do that on their own?

  • this is totaly confuesing

    ye yah

  • I can finally be a gargoyle for halloween JOY

    \(^.^)/

  • ...at what kind of stores did you buy all the materials...because i paid just for the pvc 15 euro...>_________> this was way more expensive...than i expected...

  • LOL Once your Parrot is out of the way 4:27

  • DUCT TAPE

  • DUCT TAPE! Haha!

  • She sounds like Jodie Foster...

  • @3:36 haha

  • Also, do you make and sell?

  • Those really are just great, though do they support themselves? It looks like you have to hold them the whole time.

  • 0:36 DRAGON ABUSE!!!!!

  • I've been using your epic design for the past 3 years for the best dragon costume in my neighborhood!

  • I love it "how strong?" *punches* XD

  • Thumbs Up for PARROT!

  • will it work if the cables/ wiers are not attacked to the feet but to hand rings you can pull??

  • @dragonqueen123321 Yes! I got an e-mail from a guy who did that for an out door festival. By using black wire it makes the pull rings and wires almost invisible.

  • These are awsome. I Made an angel pair.. and Rigged them so they would work on my white Horse. She looked amazing for our parade!

  • that's helpful but please do a repeat on the sections with "err" and "um", it'll be much better, thanks!

  • @Hergonan But that's the point! By using colloquialisms I am able to give the videos a sense of place as well as increase accessibility by my audience, who will find dry "Kings' English" prose alienating and detached. Other colloquialisms I use intentional include "wanna," "gonna," "like," and "sorta."

  • @gryphern i can understand the point of "wanna"/etc but I just find the err/umms distracting. I'd rather have a pause than an "err".

  • ohhhhhhhh shit! Thats badass!

  • While going thru my stuff in the garage, I found lots of stray straps with clips that came off camping gear or backpacks, I have no idea. I bet everybody has a box with some webbing straps. DUCT TAPE is more readily available, and if it can fix hang gliders it can certainly support dragon wings!

  • lol...gotta love rudy!

  • if i wanted to be a demon wat kind of scales would i use

  • lol...how...strong...snap...that strong

  • DUCT TAPE!

My aunt and I are doing this, totally, we have the base pvc stuff in my basement.

  • Okay, question: Would it work to make a joint in the "elbow" of the wing like the one at the top, and have the same string attached to it, so that the whole wing moves, not just the one joint?

  • @EJLizardbreath Yes. Takes a lot more force. Very fun effect, sort of like a fully articulated puppet. Tiring to wear if large, comfy if small wings. If you're serious about this message me with your skype name and we can conference call it.

  • @gryphern Thank you. :) Honestly, I was just curious. It seemed odd to have just one joint move. I'm not serious, just glad to know that it's possible. :D

  • OMG i'm going to try this!!

  • Haha it's cool and just what I need, to finish my projekt!

  • Can you make a pair of angel wings? I want to be an angel for a photoshoot?

  • @JawdropperFashion There is a good instructable on how to make angel wings, it's a guy who is bare-chested wearing angel wings and jeans. Combine his overlapping wing areas to this design and you're good to go.

  • @gryphern how do I find that video? I was wanting to be an angel too, only for halloween this year...

  • I've been planning to make the perfect dragon costume for the Scarborough Faire Renaissance Festival, your video has further added to the oncoming awesomeness. I'm hoping the end result will look like something like the proto drakes from warcraft. You have been very informative, including adding hands-on artistic techniques that one can learn from knowing the materials. Thank you. Look up my designs on deviantart . com profile named RichardVale

  • Is the parrot a nessecary material? i cant seem to find it at my local hardware store

  • how strong? *PUNCH *KICK *HAMMER *PUNCH that strong... :P :D

  • "Props to my EU viewers, yo!" :D:D:D:D lool

  • DUCT TAPE!

  • is it possible to use this structure for angel wings?

  • Would this work on a smaller scale?

  • EPIC DUCKTAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How strong? *Basically kills it* That strong. For 18$ yeah :3 That's amazing.

  • lol start punching and kicking the wings

  • I have been searching the Internet for dragon wings that I could create for my daughters Dragon birthday party and have found absolutely nothing worthy. However, this project is exactly what I have been searching for. Would you be willing to re-create it for me for my daughters birthday? I will buy all supplies and send to you. Pretty please!!!!

  • you have an amazing voice.

  • indy mogul's demon wings is a better tutorial cost less and easier

  • High five for Parrots!!!!

  • This video needs more Rudy and less "umm"s!

    Seriously though, nice work!

  • i went on top of empire state building and jump im now a ghost and writing this from heaven in heaven theres always wifi ive also found that jesus is asian his name is wong he doesnt know where people are getting christ

  • @davy1678

    ...Is the wifi ad supported?

  • @gryphern

ive also found that it wasnt free ive been charged with my soul im now writing this from hell with a dialup connection its actualy warm and cheery here the devil doesnt know why people thinks its bad down here (dont come here hes paying me to say this )

  • @davy1678 Think of something more original than trying to make Family Guy quotes your own

  • @davy1678 and u dont watch family guy at all?

  • @davy1678 Your in Heaven and you are on Youtube?

  • @davy1678 went from a stupid comment to an even stupider family guy referance.

  • @davy1678 stfu stop trying to get thumbs from posting random things from family guy

  • The support against the body is insufficient, but it's a good starting point.

  • man thats wicked!!!!!!!!

  • can you make two for your body?

  • Hey, did you see Lynsie's costume? You're idea really worked for her! When you get on youtube, type in "Finished Night Fury Costume", you can see her partying with her dragon costume she made by hand. Look at her wings...she got the idea from you. The rest was all her idea and she made it all. It turned out great!

  • @wybielover OMG those are so GREAT. I am totally digging that. EEE! So cool! She's got a great character presence in the suit!!!! (Commenting on her vid now)

  • Wait so where exactly do you attach the other end of the wire? on an eyelet attached to the block of wood?

  • imagine a kid jumping of the empire state building while wearing this

  • DUCT TAPE!

Thankyou SO much for this! Its a great tutorial and will help me a great deal. :)

  • DUCT TAPE!

  • Is there a way to make it so the wings open out towards the side rather than up? I'm certain I could figure it out if I play with the desisn a bit but if you already know that would be amazingly helpful

  • @imXyourXstalker It just depends on where you carve the notches to insert the wing part. It looks like she did a front and back cut on the pipe so the wings would open behind her. You would probably want a left to right cut for yours to open to the side. But you would probably have to adjust where you place the eyelets for the string.

  • 1. The guys are cute in this vid. 2. The veins are awesome, but since this would be a bigger creature rather then a tiny one, wouldn't the veins be bigger? Awesome vid, you're a wonderful artist!

  • DUCT TAPE

  • i cant make it i dont have a parrot lol

  • Would it be possible to mod these to open to the side, rather than the back?

I would like to make side opening angel wings, if possible with this design. I was thinking maybe just screw them to the block of wood sideways rather than back facing? And then, the cable of one wing would go to the opposite foot?(left wing opened by right foot?

  • isnt that only 1 wing though. looks difficult o.o

  • Genius.

  • what if you had more fingers in the wing

  • DUCT TAPE!!!!!!!!!

  • 4:12

Aren't the islets in the wrong place according to your diagram and instruction?

  • @RandomAnimeLover123 That video was of us testing a design change while making the video. The diagram and instructions are based on having made these wings many times before. So yes, totally wrong!

  • @gryphern

    Ah, okay! Thanks :D

Another question came up, though. Are the tiny scales to cover up any bare parts?

  • @RandomAnimeLover123 Yes. Also the extra detail of the scales helps transform the obviously fabric wing into something with a context, namely, dragon skin.

  • to much Sifi

  • cute birdie :)

  • Nice tutorial ^^ its quite good and <3 how urs came out

    ♠

  • How much does the whole thing weigh?

  • can you pull the string .

  • does it have to be pulled by posture or can you pull the string

  • do you have to go on your toes or can u just stand up straight

  • is it possible if I could just pull the string with your hands or does it have to be pulled by posture?

  • 4:24 lol sweet bird

  • ill give you my homemade keyblade for the dragon wings! PM me if so

  • This looks really cool and I would soo love to make some but we don't have those tools and nooo way would my any1 get them for me

  • yes! perfect!

  • Thank you so much for this video! I made a set of my own, and I love them. I planned to (and successfully) walked on stilts while wearing them, so I did not use your body posture idea, but had small metal rings I could loop around my thumb to open the wings. They took me dang near 20 hours to make, but I am so happy with the results. Again, you are awesome!

  • i just got an idea for jeepers creepers for halloween this year

  • DUCT TAPE!

I love it. These wings are beautiful, I wish I had the space to make them.

  • DUCT TAPE!! hahaha

  • this is so amazing im so going to try this :) omg it is only one wing!

  • this is so amazing im so going to try this :)

  • Seems difficult.......

For the foam, couldn't you save time with feathers?

    Just a sudjestion.

  • aww i really want to make these wings i luv dragons

  • awww i luv dragons i really want to make these winga

  • would i be able to attack feathers to this to make angel wingz or will they become to heavy and break? ik how strong it was in the beginnng im just making sure before i build it and get disappointed if it dosnt work

  • @sansomstudios check out the "how to make angel wings" on Instructables to see how you could attach feathers. Build a small pair to start so you don't drive yourself crazy your first time through.

  • @gryphern hi can you tell me all the materials i would need to make smaller wings

  • @gryphern Question: If you added feathers, would they HAVE to be in the style of the angel wings on instructibles, or can we just attach feathers to the frame that you have here.

  • @sansomstudios

feathers arent very heavy but you would need a LOT of them

  • Its only ONE wing!!!!

    WHAT THE CRAP!!!!

  • Hahahaha how strong?!

  • DUCK TAPE!!!!!LOL That made my day!

  • DUCK TAPE DUCK TAPE DUCK TAPE

  • DUCT TAPE! haha that was great

  • DUCK TAPE...

  • sweet!! i'm using this design for the upcoming Mobile Ren Faire, where I'll be a dragon-amazon woman :)

They will be still though, so i'll need to modify the design, but no matter! i'll send a video or a pic for you in full costume. thanks for all your designs, and double thanks for sharing them!

  • DUCT TAPE. hahah

  • DUCTTTT TAPE.

    LOL

these wings are awsome btw! :D

  • OMG DUCK TAPE POWAAA

  • DUCK TAPE.....

  • What about the cable to move the wings? Did you guys put it through the eyelets before putting on the scales? It looks like the cable works under the scales, but I'm not sure.

  • lol for strong testing

  • Would it be alright with you if I used your wing plans for an upcoming cosplay? This is so awesome!

  • @viliey31 TOTALLY. Be in touch if you have any questions about construction. Lots of people message or e-mail me so I can pass back and forth all the info I get.

  • @gryphern Thanks so much. I can send you the outcome if you like. I'm being a charizard. ^.^

  • on the supplies list, are all those things for the hardware store supposed to be enough for just 1 wing or both?thanks in advance!

  • freakin sexy voice

  • can u deliver them 2 me loll haha

  • @bestruby1990 ...I could deliver them by air.

    (Rim shot.) (Crowd boos.)

  • is there anyway to make them open more sideways or more angled outwards rather than directly behind the wearer?

  • ahahhahahaha i love you guys!!

  • awesome i'm going to use this for my Demona costume

  • 'once your parrot is out of the way' lmao xD

could you do the exact same, but add feathers on to make bird or angel looking wings?

  • THANK YOU!!!! I'll actually be making vampire/bat wings but its bascially the same thing (minus the scales). this helped a LOT! X333

  • Kewl!!!! How strong! (BAM! BAM! etc!) That strong!

  • Hi. this is great, just what my daughter wants this year and I think she can do a lot of it herself. Found you on cherylrainfield projects site where it says there are pdf instructions. How do I find and download the pdf? Thanks.

  • do they actually fly? or glide?

if they do i'll make some :)

  • @Sakura15377

haha highly improbable, tho you're free to give it a try ;D

  • I LUV DUCT TAPE!!! LOL!! XD

  • u know u can make these wings for a dog halloween costume : p

  • DUCK TAPE

    How long dose it take???

    And would you sell it???

  • once your parrot is out of the way...

  • Nice job!!!

  • i like the how hard part

  • DUCK TAPE

  • i think now whenever i say duct tape, i'm not just going to say duct tape, i'm going to say DUCT TAPE in an epic voice like that :3.

  • It looks like she used 6 yards of fabric sewn together instead of three... is that true? Can someone clarify?

  • @angelbbad8789 The amount of fabric will depend on the design. We glued scraps together and the wings are narrow without large handing parts. To estimate the fabric we'd need we drew the design out on paper, then drew the design life sized in chalk on concrete, measuring how much fabric would really be used when the wings were open.

  • I dont think its strong enough, PUNCH it again XD lol

  • your like megiver! that is soo cool

  • Dont fall from a roof boy..

  • omgawd u just totaly gave me a fuckin impifiany omg thank you thank you lol and whats so funny about it it has bothing to do with wings

  • lol, 'once your parriot is out of the way...'

    nice parrot and wings

  • duct tape!

  • DUCK TAPE! u guys r brilliant!

  • @shairyar123

You're brilliant, too! Let's revel in how great creative people are! (Insert samba here.)

  • @shairyar123 its actual 'Duct Tape' not 'Duck tape' Duck Tape is a brand that makes duct tape

  • @HazaTV thats kinda funny XD

  • @shairyar123 haha its duct, not duck lol but i always say duck cos its funnier :P

  • @kawaiiableSushi LOL I call it Duck also :P

  • what was with the DUCT TAPE? lmao

  • Great idea. I will definitely do this for Halloween this year. However, I'll substitute some kind of vein pattern in place of the scales. Just have to figure out how to do it.

    Thanks for great tutorial!

  • duct tape! haha thumbs up ;)

  • Quick question, how did you attach the steel cable to your body in a way that didn't require you to be completely hunched over and knees completely bent when the wing is closed? I tried placing the wire in the location that it shows in your "How Dragon Wings Work diagram", but my wings refuse to open completely.

  • @KiwiKimberly Pt 1

It is possible, fear not! Take a moment and consider the body type you're working with. Ben is built like a dwarven axe wielder, with a long back and short legs. So For him it was mostly his back to pull the wire taut. For me, I've got super long legs, so I use posture change in my knees and hips. With that in mind, identify where you'll have the most posture change. Then, measure your distance difference by using string along your body...
